@@Hambini maybe it was a 3d airflow analysis and those were the actual shapes. If you can make a 3d airflow model and recreate those shapes then you might be able to find out how they got that data.
I come out of the racing sail boat industry. We square cut the trailing edge of NACA profiled deep keels to induce a rotating rod of water along the trailing edge of the keel/ wing that acts as a bearing which induces laminar flow earlier than non cut off trailing edges. In effect this acts like the turbulaters on aircraft wings, creating turbulance that is predictable in drag characteristics and allowing for water stream to lose turbulence earlier and with less drag inducing flutter than when coming off a NACA profile. I have long wondered when bike frame manufacturers would catch up, and canyon obviously have.
For ironman races, you probably don't need too much drop since you need to ride 180km on that position after the swimming and still a full marathon ahead, so comfort is much more important over being extremely aero.
@@Hambini It's truly fascinating how someone can be downright brilliant and world class in a complex field like aerospace and aerodynamics, yet be clueless in something as simple as geography. Really shows how different we all are in our fields of interests.

I hope to be able to afford one some day. I was under the impression that they were made in Taiwan or China like so many other popular brands. Thanks.
A word about the ironman bike. You generally won't have an extremely aggressive position because that can tighten up your hip flexors, which is bad for the run off the bike. And the crappy mavic wheels? We train on those and use the full aero wheels for race day. And the 'box' on the front is a drink bottle.
Just an amateur opinion here, though I thought, that the "TriDent" profile looks like a classical Kamm-Tail profile, which is supposed to have better aerodynamics than the NACA-profile at shorter lengths (when the NACA profile is not long enough to provide laminar flow, and causes early separation/turbulence/drag) - a lot of bike companies have materials showing different variations of the Kamm-Tail profile on their more recent bikes..
My personal thought was they had to get their bike to comply with the UCI regulation which stipulates 3:1 profile. They can't get the strength from a NACA profile and therefore go to the Kamm Tail/Trident etc. The pure Triathlon bikes have much longer aerofoils that taper more as they are not governed by that rule. My gripe is the way the aerodynamics are depicted.

I've had 4 speed wobbles on this bike now so thinking of replacing the bike but I might ride with a setup and stile that courses a wobble. Is there a type of frame that will be a better choice. Usually this is caused by the resonant frequency of the bike + rider matching the frequency of either road bumps or, for example shivering muscles if you're descending a long hill in cold weather. You can't change the mass of bike + rider as you ride along, so try changing the 'stiffness' of your body or the position of your weight on the bike. Standing off the saddle gripping tighter or more loosely to the bars, bending your arms etc. all should adjust the frequency response of the bike. Since this is happening in your 'normal' riding position, rather than changing that, I'd see about changing features of the bike instead. First thing I'd try is to check whether there's serious imbalance in the wheels as they spin as this could be the source of the wobble as the force the out of balance wheel creates gets higher as the wheel goes faster, so if it lands on a resonant frequency of the bike there's plenty of energy to add to the resonance. Also try different sized tyres to see if this makes a difference - this sort of resonance almost never happens on mountain bikes, mostly thanks too the damping from the wider, softer tyres, so try wider tyres at a lower pressure. Last I heard on modern thin-walled tyre carcasses, rolling drag is no longer that much of a killer on wide road tyres - even the pros are riding 'normal' width tyres these days rather than the sub 20mm widths that were popular back in the day.
If you are experiencing speed wobble get rid of that bike. I've owned a lot of bikes and only one did this, it was a Merlin titanium frame. This is very dangerous and if you value your life you will buy another bike.
Speed wobbles are generally a geometric issue unless your fork is so compromised it’s significantly flexing under road vibration. I’d try a longer/lower stem first.

Almost as exciting as visiting Porsche in Zuffenhausen. Not really! Sorry! Not only is Porsche PORSCHE, but the vehicles are made right there on the spot. Can't say that about Canyon (or just about any other bicycle manufacturer). Although here's an interesting factoid: Porsche doesn't consider itself a true "manufacturer." They're design and assembly. Most of their components are built by other manufacturers like Getrag, Bosch, Wurth, Ruf and many, many others. Mercedes, on the other hand, is indeed a true manufacturer. Although they outsource a lot of components, they produce engine parts, engines and transmissions right in their foundry and fabrication facility in Unterturkheim, next to Stuttgart. PS You should really widen your horizons and jump on a mountain bike, Dr. Hambini! You're doing yourself a disservice by not embracing this wonderful segment of the bicycling world. If I had to choose between road and mountain, it'd be mountain every single time. Plus, think of all the opportunity you could find analyzing hydraulic fork suspension, rear suspension geometry, and disk brake performance! You'd NEVER run out of compelling material!
Perhaps you should also broaden your horizons - Porsche makes sh*tbox diesel SUVs and Mercs are as reliable as Brummie bus schedules. If any car manufacture should be lauded it should be the ones that can produce reliable, useful, emmision-comlying machines at affordable prices, not some over-engineered mechanical penis enhancers.
Cool vid! I like their aero road bikes, but have heard many delivery horror stories...! Quite common to see aerobars set quite high so you can tuck your arms under your chin.
I bought an ultimate last year. Their web said they will ship my bike in 1 month. What surprise me is that they shipped in 2 week and the shipping only costed 4 day from German to Hong Kong. But the shipping price outside EU is too high, 300+ USD.
Re the mention of the shallow box-section Mavic wheels on that TT bike at 8mins, I would assume that someone rode this bike through some of Lanzarote's deadly crosswinds.
The drop or lack thereof on Jan Frodeno’s bike is because he’s a triathlete who doesn’t want a super aggressive position for a 90km bike ride before having to straighten up for a half marathon immediately afterwards.
Jan Frodeno is a Triathlete, might explain why the drop is so small as he's competing in 3 events so his flexibility isn't as designed towards just cycling.

I graduated with an MSc in Aerospace Engineering back in 2015, and its true NACA (although there are A LOT of NACA profiles) are still used. I still have my doubts about how much benefit the average joe will feel using an aerobike going barely 25mph.
actually I might aswell work it out :P, so Fd = 0.5 rho v^2 Cd A. Assuming unit area and a Cd of 0.88, we can work out that a rider will experience 67N of drag at 25mph. which is kind of like being weighed down by a 6.8kg weight but in the direction of drag. That's actually interesting. If you then work out how much force a rider makes, you could computer this drag as a percentage of the force generated by a cyclist.
If you don't pay attention to triathlon, you don't know who Jan Frodeno is. If there would be any triathletes he would know, it would be the Brownlee brothers.
The new Ultimate CF SL 7 has a different bottom bracket than all the others, namely Token Ninja Lite BB4124 PF86.5 instead of a standard shimano BB, why could that be. I don't think the token ninja BB is any cheaper. I wanted to buy that bike for the colder rainy months, now I am sceptical.
@@Hambini but why would canyon do that with only one bike, if it's not much cheaper. could it be that those are frames that didn't make quality control which they now use for their cheapest ultimate cf model?
It looks like that’s not really a NACA profile. The trailing edge has been rounded over a lot. It looks to me like the bottom section closes faster to try to meet at an edge. At some Reynolds numbers that will cause early separation like you see in the plot.
just interested / no offense... have you taken into consideration the "factor" of speed with the NACA Profile and the trident profile. could it be possible that a trident profile is more aerodynamic in "low" speed (35-50kp/h) than the NACA profile, where the NACA profile is definately more aero in high speed (1000kp/h) than the trident??? (besides, i have no clue - just asking)

If anything the “ultra high modulus” frames are mostly marketing. They’re mostly made from standard modules fibers with a small fraction of high modulus fibers placed where they need to add stiffness.
what bikes do you ride and recommend?
Are you a Bicycle Tech? Have you worked on Canyon, Cervelo?
Cool vid! I like their aero road bikes, but have heard many delivery horror stories...! Quite common to see aerobars set quite high so you can tuck your arms under your chin.
I heard they had fixed their deliveries - well that's what they said but forums are still littered with issues.
I bought an ultimate last year. Their web said they will ship my bike in 1 month. What surprise me is that they shipped in 2 week and the shipping only costed 4 day from German to Hong Kong. But the shipping price outside EU is too high, 300+ USD.
Did you honestly say you had no idea who Jan Frodeno is?!
Re the mention of the shallow box-section Mavic wheels on that TT bike at 8mins, I would assume that someone rode this bike through some of Lanzarote's deadly crosswinds.
15 cm drop is quite a lot for a bike over 180 km, with swim and run also.
Actually the first bike shown on video is a Somec made in Italy with Columbus tubings
Nice field trip!
The drop or lack thereof on Jan Frodeno’s bike is because he’s a triathlete who doesn’t want a super aggressive position for a 90km bike ride before having to straighten up for a half marathon immediately afterwards.
Thanks for the video I really enjoyed it. I own a pair of Zipp wheels, would you recommend changing the bearings?
yes. they are the worst bearings I've ever seen
@@Hambini Hello Hambini, do you know if Bontrager Aeolus Pro 5 bearings are good?
this confirms who you were visiting about BBs then.. worrying, however(touch wood) my aeroad is absolutely fine
Jan Frodeno is a Triathlete, might explain why the drop is so small as he's competing in 3 events so his flexibility isn't as designed towards just cycling.
Yo Hammy, Why is an 11:38 video of yours a full 1.38 Gigs? Some hollywood blockbusters are 1.89Gigs.Can you explain that? bro.
Is this video from before or after the one where you said they make the worst quality bikes you've ever seen?
Why don't Canyon come up with vibrant colour options?
German Engineering is on the TOP, would love to have one of the CANYON bikes one day!
Lol, get a brain. All bikes come from Asia/China. Nothing to do with German engineering. The bikes are faulty, low quality.
@@ItachiGT @Nono Bonono I have a brain and you too, but instead of having hate to your heart, why not study more about how to speak with respect. It seems that your brain has only one functions, your brain only tells you how say a word without having studied to it's meaning. Have some research because nowadays knowledge is free.
FYI, NOT ALL BIKES ARE COME FROM ASIA/CHINA. SOME BIKE'S, SPECIALLY BIKE'S THAT ARE MASS PRODUCE INTO THOUSANDS ARE OF COURSE MANUFACTURED INTO A LARGE FACTORY WITH MACHINE AND HUMANS. SPECIALTY BIKE'S OR THE MOST EXPENSIVE BIKES WERE MADE IN EUROPE. Mass produced bikes has a QUALITY CHECK INSPECTED by the Manufacturer Brand name. Accept it or not BICYCLE was first invented in GERMANY by DRAISINE.
@@juniorjunior9118 ". Mass produced bikes has a QUALITY CHECK INSPECTED by the Manufacturer Brand name."
Bwahahahaha, what are you doing on this video/channel? They obviously don't have a proper QC. Bike industry is a big joke, money scamming industry and fools like yourself fall for it.
@@ItachiGT you were a NONSENSE person! If that's your view from where you are, go ahead, be that IDIOT!
@@juniorjunior9118 The only nonsense comes from you, little fanboy. I am sure the industry is happy to see idiots en mass who buy blindly and turn a blind eye to utter crap.
Lmao, biking "engineers", they don't deserve to be called engineers. They cannot design, they cannot QC, they cannot manufacture, they can't do shit but lying through marketing brainwash.
And it works for idiots like you. Have fun
soooo why don't you do mountain bikes??
Can you purchase bikes at the Canyon shop? Can you demo bikes there?
Dan Reilly yes you can. They have a large selection
never mind all that roady stuff ,did you see my spectral cf 9.0 ex I ordered LOL,good vid mate thanks for sharing :)
No I didn't see your bike. It was probably still on route from China!
ooooh nastey LOL
Sorry, couldn't resist. I think they are made in the Giant Factory. which is taiwan or china
for £4k I expected german quality ,thats very disapointing to say the least !! .
Your peace of shit road bike was also made in china.
I don't think you will be allowed in there again whilst you are breathing! Lol
I am surprised they didn't pull you up for filming?
I wouldn't want to. I'm amazed I didn't catch something from the door handle
Look 695 to be made up tomorrow, new look bike day! Will do a in depth vid about it, i will tag you since you are Look fanboy, then you can do a Sunday roast on me, i am up to being flamed! Lol
Dude! I enjoyed the video... To include the cheap joke! 😄
Thanks! I do try to be sarcastic
Love the dig at the end ;) haha
Imagine how happy the people from Canyon were to see him in there.. .even wearing the jacket... ouch
would be better if they'd polished that mould up a bit! Great video again.
thankyou
how can you not know Jan Frodeno? He won the Kona Ironman twice and is the Ironman record holder.
He doesn't play cricket.
Sry mate, you lost me when you said you didn't know who Jan Frodeno is 🙈
If you don't pay attention to triathlon, you don't know who Jan Frodeno is. If there would be any triathletes he would know, it would be the Brownlee brothers.
jan frodeno was the first guy riding etap in public so even as a pure cyclist you had to check him and his bike out
Even as a not triathlon fan, one should know who Jan Frodeno is haha
first dibbs on that Hambini jacket :)
The token ninja will work with a wide range of hole sizes, you are effectively clamping it rather than work as it's supposed to. It's less stiff.
@@Hambini but why would canyon do that with only one bike, if it's not much cheaper. could it be that those are frames that didn't make quality control which they now use for their cheapest ultimate cf model?
you can cheap out on the qa qc with it
That flow field is wrong whatever Reynolds number 😆 I now wonder whether canyon is that really good at aero, seriously
Well at least it's not just me!
It looks like that’s not really a NACA profile. The trailing edge has been rounded over a lot.
It looks to me like the bottom section closes faster to try to meet at an edge. At some Reynolds numbers that will cause early separation like you see in the plot.
Where are canyon bicycles made?
Taiwan I think, I read that giant manufactures their frames to specs made by canyon
This is like watching Bill Nye touring the Ark except here is nobody to entertain as Ken Ham did lol
Canyon aren't that disillusioned, the Ark Encounter is wrong on all levels about pretty much everything.
@@Dare2Doubt Yeah, I know. Just exaggerating, they seem decent unlike Ark bs :D
just interested / no offense... have you taken into consideration the "factor" of speed with the NACA Profile and the trident profile. could it be possible that a trident profile is more aerodynamic in "low" speed (35-50kp/h) than the NACA profile, where the NACA profile is definately more aero in high speed (1000kp/h) than the trident??? (besides, i have no clue - just asking)
Excellent video as always! Which are your favorite carbon wheels?
In carbon, I would get Mavic. or some decent cheap rims with decent hubs.
Interesting to see
geesh...he dunno Jan Frodeno 🙃
Yes Absolute Legend had the honour of meeting him a couple of times; Frodissimo! The reason the drop is not more aggressive is because of Triathlon. Long ride and still a run.
No way some trident profile beats naca profile. Trailing edge is very important for air not to be turbulent.
OMG... that is not the Danish flag!!! It's the norwegian flag...
😂🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂 I love you man!
How do they grade there Carbon compared to specialized fact 11Grade?
I have no idea I'm afraid
I love my Canyon Ultimate.
Me too!
Have they invited you back lol
Not yet
7:00 (hambini starts rubbing his fingers on what i think is bare carbon) - me screaming internally very loudly, why tf have they constructed a carbon splinter generator out in the open
7:20 - (it’s been dressed) - ah….ffs marketing strikes again
To just ignore all them mtbs because you don't want to or can't understand the wonderful engineering that goes into them is quite sad, could have easily made a 20 min video and not alienated the mtbers who watch your channel...
What kind of video would that be given as you say he doesn't understand MTB's? Get a grip!
