At purchase you get 1-year of included updates (free first year subscription) to the diagnostic and maintenance modules. OBD functionality is enabled with or without a subscription. If you want to continue to use the diagnostic or maintenance modules beyond the first year, you must pay for a subscription (one year at a time). The bi-directional features are part of the diagnostic/maintenance modules so you must have an active subscription for those to work.
The verification code is sent to the email address you entered in the activation screen when creating a new MUCAR user account. Make sure to check your junk mail folder in case the email is being treated as a junk email by your email service company. You can try clicking on the "Verification Code" link on that page to have the verification code sent to your email account. It worked for me without any problem.
