Alright, so we have a great spot. But no one will be able to afford to live there or even thrive there. Its no wonder everyone is trying to leave Canada. We can't afford ANYTHING, not even a house in a ghost town.
You are absolutely right. The average wages there would mean you would be giving up 2/3s of your paycheck for housing alone. If things don't change, we'll all be living in ghost towns.
Had a house there in the early 2000s, guess I should have kept it. As you said, there is little work for people. The winter, on the top of a mountain, is windy, and cold like the Arctic. Summer is extremely hot. It is very friendly, and there is bus service between Blairmore and Coleman.
Yeah the houses there have gone up A LOT. It has become a jumping off spot for outdoor enthusiasts. I wouldnt mind having a second home there, but the prices are a little crazy!
The crime stats you stated have no meaning when not compared to other towns. How does it compare to Calgary? No homeless people, too damn cold in the winter. Lots of rich Albertans buying homes and businesses and fixing them is the reason why the town looks the way it does and why house prices are Calgary prices. Only the old town area you see in the video is quiet. The rest of the town centers on Hwy 3 and is very busy. Not Trans Canada busy but busy. From Coleman to Frank is only a few kilometers and one town runs into the next, so when you say "All the way to Blairmore" it's like one kilometer. Up above Hwy 3 in Hillcrest a developer just completed building about 30 homes, all sold and most are being lived in. There is a vacation home aspect here and in Sparwood and Fernie that the Albertans are finding out about. Any weekend in summer the highway is packed with Albertans heading to southern B.C. on Friday and heading home on Sunday. The Pass is only 2 hours and 15 minutes from Calgary. As a local for past 12 years. Windy is an understatement. When the trees lean to the east, you know it's windy, ALL the time. I lie, mornings can be very calm.
Thanks for the comment. If we compare statistics from both Coleman and Calgary they are quiet high in Coleman compared to Calgary. Total crimes in Coleman are 7358 compared to 4206 in Calgary. Violent crimes in Coleman are 1418 compared to 811 in Calgary and property crimes in Coleman are 5939 compared to 3395 in Calgary. These statistics are gathered from The RCMP database and the Calgary Police Services as per 100K residents. Indeed the old town is a little quieter, than the cut through where weekend and holiday traffic can be a bit much!
The crows net pass is done, they tried bring in retirement communities for years but that failed. Even their hospital closed after the mines closed in the 1980's. Sorry guy this town is too far from calgary and Lethbridge. It is gone like Nordegg.
It very well could be, but there could be a good opportunity to change this area around. It is very busy with outdoor adventurers and there are many businesses that are succeeding. Let's hope it changes for the better, but right now, there is an idea that property values should be very high. Most houses are overpriced by 100k or more!
You are absolutely right. It is a very cool place on the edge of the rockies, but the cost of housing there is beyond fictional - $500K for a one bedroom mining house from 1915? C'mon....
I love the old soda advert
Cool little town.
Definitely has a lot of work to be done, but the foundation is there!
Love the old west

@@livinginalbertanow We need more covrage of the north and central areas.

The cost of houses there is stupid.

The prices of homes is ridiculous as well as rental properties.
Agreed. It is ridiculous. What is driving up these markets? Foreign investors? Over Population?

Thanks for posting this. I love the look of this place and can't wait to visit one day.
Thanks for commenting! It is a very interesting place stuck in time. @@foxface6719
I was raised in Coleman in the 50s and 60s, i enjoyed the walk around.
Thank you so much for the comment. I bet it changed somewhat from what you remember.
Almost a ghost town!

GREED KILLS. The houses there are stupid in price. C'mon.....$400,000 for an old 1 bedroom house? It is a joke.
Agreed. I just checked listings, and yes, they are absolutely insane now....$400-600K for a dumpy old house. @@ItsHappeningSomethingutube

The hospital is NOT CLOSED!
Begging for approx 30 young families to move there and start businesses. Maybe once the housing market collapses and prices aren’t so fictional.
