I normally love Lindsay's essays in general, but her take on The Little Mermaid was super biased and lacked context. And it's really weird because Lindsay is a feminist, yet she criticised Ariel for being "whiny" and disobeying her obviously authoritarian father, and all she sees was that "she gave up her voice for a man".
well to be fair, she did revisited her take on her critique on the movie the second time and admit she made mistakes and corrected herself on it in a recent video
The not terrorizing your children lesson is something Ariel gets to learn in the sequel. Or rather it’s don’t keep secrets from your kids and don’t lie to them. They kinda don’t like that
Basically model the behavior you want your children to have. If you want your kids to be honest, respectful, and compassionate; you have to be honest, respectful, and compassionate to them.
Lily only acknowledge the facts of things that you don’t like. THe* facts are she sold her soul for a dude she didn’t know. But at the same time she just wanted to be happy. Bias is hard here but I agree with lily- praise be the Thirsty science Fish
she didn't sell her soul FOR the man she sold her soul to get to the surface and a chance at happiness, the terms of contract for her to stay on land were to get the prince to kiss her
Though I'm positive I'll get hate for this, I still would like to say a few things and I hope you, Lily, and everyone else don't mind too much. I admit, when I was younger, I was one of those people that didn't like this film and had thoughts about it similar to Lindsay (Nostalgia chick.) I did like the visuals, the songs, and the villain but I was originally not a fan of the story or Ariel. I thought Ariel was selfish and irrational to go after someone she barely met, and very naive to trust someone as shady as Ursula. I think one of the main reasons was I didn't grow up watching this movie; actually I didn't grow up watching a lot of the Disney princess movies now that I think about it. Only a selected few I did watch but sadly this one wasn't one of them. So when I finally watched it for the first time as a teen, I just felt really annoyed by Ariel and her actions and I couldn't enjoy the film. But now as a twenty-something year old, who has gone through a lot struggles and is still struggling, who has to deal with a parent scarily similar to Ariel's father but can't do much about it (and realizing how much the parent negatively affected me and my siblings,) and is also admittedly a bit miserable and wants be truly happy, I now understand Ariel's character and her drive. She found someone who made her happy and she went through great lengths to try to hold onto him. Granted, I still don't agree with her choices but considering the circumstances, I can't truly fault her either. I mean, if I had the courage Ariel had and was given an opportunity to be with someone or get something that would make me truly happy, I would take it without a second thought. Watching the film again with how I feel now has really my opened my eyes and seeing peoples reaction to it has helped me change my perspective of this film over the years. It's still not one of my favorite films but I do have a better appreciation for it now. Again, sorry if what I said upset anyone but I felt the need to say a few things about this film and I hope everyone doesn't mind my rather long comment. I don't know if Lily will ever see my comment but I also wanted to say 'Keep up the good work, Lily, and thank you.' I've been watching your stuff for a while and I love your content. I was first drawn in by your Avatar: LoK thesis and stayed for other content but mainly because of your SU thesis; you brought up a lot of the troubling aspects about the show that I also had issues with and it was refreshing to watch a proper analysis that don't skip over them (like others tend to do). Even though I may not agree 100% with all of your views in your videos, I still love watching them for they are thought provoking and encourage me to view the subject of said videos in different ways. ( I hope that makes sense...) Anyways, great video Lily and I can't wait to see what you'll do next. (Fixed some writing mistake. Hopefully it's better now)
I think people's biggest problem with the film is that she doesnt learn anything. But screw that I'm gonna enjoy watching her be cute and dance to the wonderful music
@@LilianOrchard Good point. This is my favorite 2d princess movie. I've loved it since I was a small child so as I said I just watch it for nostalgia and fun at this point
I wish the live-action reboot had been literally this movie except Eric is a princess instead of a prince an' Triton's objection would still be "She's a human, you're a mermaid!" with no regard for Erica's gender. An' they should include Sora (...or maybe not, since that might reduce Flounder's role; maybe Sora the dolphin-boy could have Scuttle's role?).
FREAKING THANK YOU!!!!! The little mermaid is my all time favorite Disney movie, but everyone I know says it’s horrible! It’s nice to FINALLY have someone validate how amazing this movie is! Also, I don’t care who you are, Triton, in the beginning, was borderline abusive to Ariel! He learned his lesson and I do love him and his character at the end, but he was borderline abusive, and anyone would want to get out of that situation quickly! I should know. I applaud Ariel for trying to find her own way, I really do! People need to cut her some slack!
Oh this is so wonderful Lily! Glad you have such positive things to say about this film!! That scene hit me right in the heart as well when I was little and in the closet and had church people going on about how the way I felt and what I kept secret was the worst thing ever. You are so right from the last roundup about how these movies are so interesting to talk about and make great laugh out loud jokes at the same time! 😁 and as a recent anthropology major graduate I can’t believe it took this long for me to realize that Ariel is an aspiring anthropologist! ❤️
Fun fact: When Triton broke Ariel's things I never saw anything wrong with it because when I was a kid my dad broke my things so I thought it was normal for that to happen. (Not that fun but still a fact lol)
People hate this film (apart from Lindsey Ellis)? This was my sister's favourite and even though it wasn't mine I liked it enough to watch it with her. Also now that you mention it, I now prefer describing Ariel as a Science Fish now over Human Fan.
Y know, I've never really hated this movie but I never understood why it was so beloved by many, I thought it was ok but compared to other renaissance and onward princesses I didnt like it as much, maybe it was how quickly she obsessed over Eric which I realize now is a normal teenage thing even I went through but didnt want to admit. it had been a while since I watched it and I actually like it alot more upon a recent rewatch. Honestly its alot better than I typically gave it credit for. I think it has to do with me jumping on the hipster it sucks bandwagon very young and the over indulgence of mermaid memorabilia that plagued toystores until frozen happened. Honestly I think I didnt like it because I always related more to belle and liked beauty and the beast and Cinderella much more as a kid and being salty that everyone I asked said Ariel was their favorite because mermaids.
I personally never disliked nor adored the movie too much (mermaids and their fascinating world plus the story are a great bonus), but what brushed me the wrong way was how she could obsesses so much about a single human man, be a rebel 16 year old (who thinks she's child no more, HAH!!), break rules, take the high risk of never seeing her family ever again, basically love at first sight -Disney cliché the dream guy (yet they got to know each other in the following 3 days, gotta give the movie some props for that). guess I was brainwashed to think how the Disney princesses are supposed to be some sort of role models and Ariel is quite terrible in the eyes of previously listen reasons. but, however, as Lily put it, she, Ariel, only wanted something more and BETTER for herself, aka improve her life. bluntly put she didn't want to live in a lie and be miserable.. it takes alot of guts to change one's life, thankfully she had the optimism and spirit of youth powering her soul and stubborn, adventurous personality which I envy quite a bit actually, heh. it took me 27 years to realize and see this side to Ariel, which I tip my non-existing hat to Lily, thank you so much♡
You also realise Ariel a fishy anthropologist! YES. Ariel deserves all the love. Lilly, that eating joke. N O you are putting your green dollar sign in danger.
Yeah, I never saw Ariel at fault for getting the hell out. He was pretty much a tyrant to her. I wonder if he's one of the actual villains of one of my favorite movies. I love my little red haired babu.
THANK YOU!! People are all like "she didn't learn anything!!" Who cares??? It wasn't about HER learning squat. Jesus did people actually watch the movie??....anyways Also Me: *paying attention but reading a text* L: the human eating you probably isn't the warning you want it to be Me:....? Me:....OH! LILY NO 😂🤣
It really astounds me that some of the feminists who bash on Ariel for "giving her voice for a man" also bash her for disobeying her father. Because this movie would have been really feminist if Ariel had instead given up her dream and just stayed home to please her all-mighty daddy! Never mind Ariel had a dream of being human prior to meeting Erirc; never mind Ariel SAVED him first; never mind Triton was overbearing and ended up becoming abusive! Ariel fell in love with a man and that's SEXIST!
This was my favorite Disney movie as a child, it was just so sweet and the end was so epic. I expected to not like it as much when I got older, but I still adore it just as much. Only problem is that I’m Ariel’s age now and I expected to fall in love, but I’m single as can be. (I’m perfectly happy)
After rewatching this whole movie recently and thinking back to how many times I watched it as a kid…yeah, this is my favorite Disney movie of all time. Love everything about it. Holds up amazingly. Top tier movie.
Still one of my all time favorites, even with wondering as a kid why she married an adult guy (didn't know he was 18 apparently). I am hesitant but optimistic about the new one, I don't care what creeps online screech about it.
“You ever realize that what really drives Ariel is a passion for anthropology? That’s neat, I love the science fish.” THANK YOU! I’ve been banging that drum for years, while so many people whine and complain that Ariel’s only motivation in the movie is to be with a guy she doesn’t know! It’s super frustrating that people seem to forget that she’s arguable one of the princesses who’s the most interested in science. I mean, people say Belle is smart but she seems to be only reading fairly tales, while Ariel is so fascinated by another species and wants to learn everything she can about them. Eric was only that final push that made her want to become a human and it was her father’s abuse that pushed her to go to Ursula because she knew no one else could or would help her. ... I love Ariel, okay.
How is Ariel extremely intelligent? Ariel never questions Scuttle’s lies about human artifacts. Even if she’s not familiar with a smoking pipe, why would she think that it’s a musical instrument? Ariel is musically inclined so surely she would know what music sounded like. Ariel constantly forgets what things are called in “Part of that World”, as evidenced by the lyrics 🎶 I wanna see, wanna see them dancing, walking around on those…what do you call them? Oh feet! 🎶 and 🎶 What’s a fire and why does it…what’s the word…BURN? 🎶. Ariel gave up her voice to be with Eric whom she knew nothing about. She spied on him and was convinced it was true love. Typical teenager! 🙄 Ariel never bothered to take advantage of her muteness while she was on land like learning sign language or writing things down. In fact, if Ariel could write her name on Ursula’s contract, then why couldn’t she write her name down in front of Eric? Ariel makes Madison from “Splash” (another mermaid movie from Disney) look like Albert Einstein by comparison since Madison was able to *overcome her muteness by watching TV for six hours in order to converse in English with her human boyfriend Allen;* plus *Madison was able to convince the construction workers that in exchange for her mermaid necklace (since Madison wasn’t carrying any cash), the male construction workers would haul the mermaid statue in Allen’s apartment room* (either Madison has really good negotiation skills or that necklace is worth a ton! 😂).
@@beethovensfidelio Okay, at what point did I say she was extremely intelligent? I only said that she is one of few Disney Princesses who has an interest in a field of science and wants to learn more about a different species and the ins and outs of a different world from her own. Also, never said you can be smart if you read fairy tales. Hell, I can’t throw stones at my own glass house. However people really to stop with the whole ‘girl reads books = genius’ thing is all I’m saying. No need to be so sensitive about it 😁
Ahhh this is such a good movie. I hate that so many ppl hate it when she actually is the only princess who seems to try and really get what she wants and needs. So valid. Awwww 💘
She currently has 2 that I can think of, one is talking about how Tangled has degraded in quality ever since the complete tone shift and another centered around rewriting the entirety of Legend of Korra.
FINALLY a good take on Arial that acknowledges her interest in science and artifacts. If she only wanted to be human for Eric then explain her room of human stuff and the literal fucking song about how she wants to be human before even meeting Eric. I also never noticed the subconscious trans themes, no wonder why I hard identified with Arial when I was young
If Ariel got three _weeks_ or _months_ on land in her deal, no one would have a leg to stand on when criticizing this movie. Eric and Ariel are both cinnamon rolls and the cutest Disney couple!
In the fairy tale, the mermaid is on land for a long time because there’s no time limit. The only rule is that she has to marry the prince to gain an immortal soul.
I remember when I was a kid I really wanted a dress like the sparkly dress when she comes out the water at the end. I would literally ask for one every Christmas.
I honestly don't think Ariel is a thirsty science fish. She more of a thirsty EXPLORER or ARCHAEOLOGIST fish. Other than that, I agree with EVERYTHING you've said in this video :)

You should really check out a anime called Saga of Tanya the Evil. It’s about a ruthless, 30 year old Japanese businessman who gets murdered by one of his coworkers. He would normally reincarnate in his own world , but since he’s an atheist, god decides to reincarnate him in an alternate WW1. Now he has to help Germany win WW1 in order to survive the twisted game that god has set in place for him. The thing is though, is that he reincarnated as a little girl, so the main protagonist is a 9-12 year old little girl, who is a complete psychopath. The reason she’s able to stay alive is because of her ruthlessness, cunning, skill, and her overwhelming desire to give god the middle finger. She even refuses to call him god, instead referring to him as “Being X.”
This is my favorite childhood movie, like i fucking love everything it said and in a way it made me feel better about little kid me who had issues with themself, it means a lot to me. I'm a little bit surprised theres people don't think of ariel running away to be human as a good thing, she was gonna be the most depressed mermaid in the sea! She loves humans to the point where she wanted to be with them of course she'd take the first ticket out. Honestly it was always very upsetting seeing 'those' pictures people drew of Ariel wanting to go back so bad she'd hurt herself to do such a thing. Trident and the other mermaids were at her wedding and it was never implied she couldn't see any of her family or friends again. She chose freedom and happiness, not a stranger and a vagina.
She justed wanted to see the surface, the prince was just a bonus.
I think by the end both were equally important reasons for her to become human, and that's ok!

To quote your old “Top 10 Disney Songs” video;
“SCIENCE, GODDAMMIT!”
Jackie McCann You saw that vid too? Sweet!
The not terrorizing your children lesson is something Ariel gets to learn in the sequel. Or rather it’s don’t keep secrets from your kids and don’t lie to them. They kinda don’t like that
Basically model the behavior you want your children to have. If you want your kids to be honest, respectful, and compassionate; you have to be honest, respectful, and compassionate to them.
wow, im surprised. i was ready for you to rip this a new one, but you seem to enjoy this alot. Good for you!
Also, popping Ursula to death is funny!
Ariel the anthropologist..........I like it
does this make Lyra Ariel's pony counterpart..? 🤔 xD
My friend was calling me during the editing process of this video. I'm happy she did.
Lily only acknowledge the facts of things that you don’t like. THe* facts are she sold her soul for a dude she didn’t know. But at the same time she just wanted to be happy. Bias is hard here but I agree with lily- praise be the Thirsty science Fish
she didn't sell her soul FOR the man she sold her soul to get to the surface and a chance at happiness, the terms of contract for her to stay on land were to get the prince to kiss her
When i was younger i didn't understand ursula getting stabbed. I thought the boat just ran into her
Though I'm positive I'll get hate for this, I still would like to say a few things and I hope you, Lily, and everyone else don't mind too much.
( I hope that makes sense...)
Anyways, great video Lily and I can't wait to see what you'll do next.
(Fixed some writing mistake. Hopefully it's better now)
I think people's biggest problem with the film is that she doesnt learn anything. But screw that I'm gonna enjoy watching her be cute and dance to the wonderful music
She's not the one who's supposed to learn something. Triton is.
@@LilianOrchard Good point. This is my favorite 2d princess movie. I've loved it since I was a small child so as I said I just watch it for nostalgia and fun at this point
Me:* watching the video *
Also me:cause you forgot Ursula is Ariel aunt
it was, in a draught
I wish the live-action reboot had been literally this movie except Eric is a princess instead of a prince an' Triton's objection would still be "She's a human, you're a mermaid!" with no regard for Erica's gender. An' they should include Sora (...or maybe not, since that might reduce Flounder's role; maybe Sora the dolphin-boy could have Scuttle's role?).
"i love thirsty science fish." that had me laughing harder then it should have.
You were a lot more positive towards this movie than I was expecting and I am here for it.
That's...a bit dark, to say the least.
we love and appreciate a valid thirsty science fish in this house hold!! and sora continues to be best boy and no one can change my mind
Every gay person I’ve ever met fucking loved this movie
I personally never disliked nor adored the movie too much (mermaids and their fascinating world plus the story are a great bonus), but what brushed me the wrong way was how she could obsesses so much about a single human man, be a rebel 16 year old (who thinks she's child no more, HAH!!), break rules, take the high risk of never seeing her family ever again, basically love at first sight -Disney cliché the dream guy (yet they got to know each other in the following 3 days, gotta give the movie some props for that). guess I was brainwashed to think how the Disney princesses are supposed to be some sort of role models and Ariel is quite terrible in the eyes of previously listen reasons.
but, however, as Lily put it, she, Ariel, only wanted something more and BETTER for herself, aka improve her life. bluntly put she didn't want to live in a lie and be miserable.. it takes alot of guts to change one's life, thankfully she had the optimism and spirit of youth powering her soul and stubborn, adventurous personality which I envy quite a bit actually, heh.
it took me 27 years to realize and see this side to Ariel, which I tip my non-existing hat to Lily, thank you so much♡
Yes!!! I’ve been waiting all week for this!!!
Ok but LILY CAN SING THO !! This changes everything 😄😄😄
You also realise Ariel a fishy anthropologist! YES. Ariel deserves all the love.
Lilly, that eating joke. N O you are putting your green dollar sign in danger.
R.I.P Pat Carroll
Yeah, I never saw Ariel at fault for getting the hell out. He was pretty much a tyrant to her. I wonder if he's one of the actual villains of one of my favorite movies. I love my little red haired babu.
He’s not even a flounder
Thirsty Science Fish: the Movie
2:40 the best use of peal ever.
Lol! When he said: "That will be 20 lashes with the sea fork." 😂
She
@@LilianOrchard Oh, my bad! Great video! :)
THANK YOU!! People are all like "she didn't learn anything!!" Who cares??? It wasn't about HER learning squat. Jesus did people actually watch the movie??....anyways
Also
Me: *paying attention but reading a text*
L: the human eating you probably isn't the warning you want it to be
Me:....?
Me:....OH! LILY NO 😂🤣
It really astounds me that some of the feminists who bash on Ariel for "giving her voice for a man" also bash her for disobeying her father.
"Human men are crazy misogynistic." SOME ARE. SOME. THEY ARE JUST MORE VOCAL ABOUT THEIR (misplaced)PROBLEMS.
I love this film as a kid and growing up.....
I still love it
I love this movie so much
ok I stan thirsty science fish, but like can we mention how sora didnt hESITATE TO SHOOT A BITCH
He won’t hesitate to save a date
After rewatching this whole movie recently and thinking back to how many times I watched it as a kid…yeah, this is my favorite Disney movie of all time. Love everything about it. Holds up amazingly. Top tier movie.
i've never played a kingdom hearts game so when lily showed the clip i deadass thought sora was just gonna shoot ursula
This is my favorite Disney movie. Some people dislike it with so much passion, but it just means they haven't learned to enjoy things lol
I knew I was right to be looking forward to this video
Still one of my all time favorites, even with wondering as a kid why she married an adult guy (didn't know he was 18 apparently). I am hesitant but optimistic about the new one, I don't care what creeps online screech about it.
Favorite childhood movie validated! Also, someone give Lily a damn hug!
“You ever realize that what really drives Ariel is a passion for anthropology? That’s neat, I love the science fish.”
THANK YOU!
Ariel never bothered to take advantage of her muteness while she was on land like learning sign language or writing things down.
Also, reading fairy tales doesn’t make you stupid.
No need to be so sensitive about it 😁
YES! Let the Disney renaissance begin!
Ahhh this is such a good movie. I hate that so many ppl hate it when she actually is the only princess who seems to try and really get what she wants and needs. So valid. Awwww 💘
I was having a rough day, but watching you enjoy this just made me feel a lot better.
Lily Orchard, are you doing more first impressions or glass of water?
She currently has 2 that I can think of, one is talking about how Tangled has degraded in quality ever since the complete tone shift and another centered around rewriting the entirety of Legend of Korra.
More Lily singing please
FINALLY a good take on Arial that acknowledges her interest in science and artifacts.
If she only wanted to be human for Eric then explain her room of human stuff and the literal fucking song about how she wants to be human before even meeting Eric.
I also never noticed the subconscious trans themes, no wonder why I hard identified with Arial when I was young
Sebastian is a better dad than triton.
Yeah, but that’s not saying much, since Sebastian is incompetent and Triton is abusive.
You knew what popping was but not stabbing?
I never thought about this movie that way, guess I was more focused on Cinderella.
Lily, how can you skip the part where Ursula says in “Unfortunate souls” BODY LANGUAGE.
Yay! Lilly like one of my old favorite movies. THE SCIENCE FISH IS VALID!!!!!
i used to have the biggest crush on Ariel, she's just so nerdy, i love her
I can’t wait for you to do Zootopia! Such a good film!
Be happy Lilly. Forever and always. You deserve it!
Ariel is so pure, just a good time! We stan.
I honestly don't think Ariel is a thirsty science fish. She more of a thirsty EXPLORER or ARCHAEOLOGIST fish. Other than that, I agree with EVERYTHING you've said in this video :)
King Triton remains me of Rapunzel dad
Also father knows best listen to a father to scary world out there
Looking back at this movie I realize JUST how gay I was for Ariel and never noticed as a child.
when i was younger i never rlly liked the little mermaid, it just never caught my attention but now that i'm older, ariel's boundless joy & her ambition make me so happy & she's just the sweetest... she rlly deserves the world
Best boi sora
The Little Mermaid is my personal favourite Disney Movie, it was so nice to hear that you felt the same way about her character. Ariel is best science fish
I’m so glad you also like this movie Lily! It’s one of my favourites!
I loved this movie, but I always hid when Triton destroyed Ariel's stuff. I don't like it when parents in these movies destroy their kids stuff.
I love the little mermaid. Arial is my favorite Disney princess. Her and repanzal.
I've been waiting for this 😁
ENJOY STUFF TO ENJOY IT
1 view, 12 comments: yeah, that makes sense.
this will always be my favorite
Seeing you happy makes me happy. I never disliked this movie, but I like it just a little more after seeing this.
I love this movie
