My favorite part of Tarzan was that when his mom tried to console him when he felt like he'd never belong with the gorillas he couldn't get past how different his hands are, then later he recognizes Jane as the same as him because her hands are similar to his.

To me, racism against asian people doesn't seem common or harsh beyond name-calling, but that's because I'm not asian, and therefore don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to that sort of prejudice. So I just keep my mouth shut and try to listen to asian people when they tell me something's a problem.

Jesse Golo The world is really big, and there are varied kinds of prejudices and awful practices in every place. I’ve never run into much racism in my life personally but I live in a very culturally varied area in a very progressive city. Whenever I go to more ethnically and religiously homogeneous areas people are generally more likely to be ignorant and prejudiced towards people who don’t fit their view of “acceptably normal people”. Maybe you have not encountered many people saying these kind of things against gay people but if you just broaden your lenses a bit, read some books and listen to the stories of people different than you, you’ll see this kind of behavior and thinking is extremely common in certain parts of the world, especially places like Northern Africa or in the Midwest of the US. Heteronormativity and bigotry is a very real and very serious thing that ruins countless people’s lives around the world, and nothing good will come of downplaying it due to your own limited experience.

@@tarzanporter4396 Took me a while to figure that out as well. Jaguars are only found in the Americas (mostly in the South and Central America, but there have been sightings of them in Arizona) so we can rule them out. Tigers are only found in Asia and have stripes. Cheetah live on the Savanah's of Africa and in Iran. The only big spotted cat that makes sense for Sub Saharan Africa is the Leopard. Where is Tarzan supposed to be set anyway? My first guess was South Africa, but there are no Gorillas there, so my next guess is Nigeria.

@@Quinntus79 interesting I was puzzled when you asked about the setting where Tarzan lives since the undeniable answer is Africa but I hadn't even considered which region of Africa according to the directors Chris Buck and Kevin Lima the subtropical rainforests of the Congo are the location where they set the story they and a crew including chief animator Glen Keane travelled to Virunga national park where they observed wild gorillas and forest-dwelling elephants to get them to move and act realistically in the film. They also noticed the branches were coated in damp moss from the frequent downpours which inspired Glen Keane to suggest the idea of Tarzan skating across branches as we see him perform in the film several times firstly during the "Son Of Man" sequence and again in the finale when Jane and her doddery father, the professor, agree to settle in the rainforest with him and the gorilla family.

I watched this movie after years of not seeing it and realized Tarzan has a similar character backstory/premise to Loki (who found out he was another race/species by accident and confronted Odin to find out he was actually the son of the “enemy” leader Laufey) and Moses in Prince of Egypt (who believed he was born to the Pharaoh and his wife until his actual sister sung a song he recognized from his real mother and shattered his sense of self). All three have a reconciliation moment with their adoptive mothers where those women all basically say “You *are* our son, whether or not you’re of our blood (or race)”. What I find interesting is how two of them are concluded as heroes in their stories (Moses and Tarzan), and one continues to be shoehorned into being a complicated villain (Loki) even when it seems unnatural to force the story that way as his story progresses.
Thing is, as a kid I absolutely hated Tarzan (the movie) but I could never name a reason why. Meanwhile I’m obsessed with Loki as a character and Prince of Egypt remains one of my favorite animated musicals, so much that I love it more than at least 60% of Disney content. What the heck is wrong with me.
