- Our Victorian electrical system has a sudden failure!
Some of our lights went out with no explanation. Follow along as we walk through the troubleshooting process to restore power.
A winter storm bears down on the region and we become house bound for a couple of days. We might as well strip more paint out of the upstairs bedroom.

Great video! Great RUclips channel kudos!!!
Thanks for watching!
It’s a really good thing Mike understands electricity so well. That whole situation could have been bad! I envy the patience you both have. If it’s not one thing, it’s something else!
Hugs from a balmy +20f Minnesota❣️
OoooOoOoo.....Give us shivvers just thinkg about it! xx
Definitely need to change out for an updated fuse to breaker box. We have an 1883 Victorian in Cheyenne WY, first thing we did was update the wiring and breaker box. The wiring did not need a lot, the electricians thoroughly went over it, but the breaker box needed updating. We have an old coal converted to natural gas boiler that is 100 years old. I just found your channel and loving the updates. We had the floors done in all of our house. There are only a few rooms left with carpet, but hardwood floors underneath. We're going through and updating when we can.
Hello fellow Victorian owner!! You are lucky to still have your boiler and radiators. Those old rigs were built to last forever. Does your house still have plaster walls?
@@1834RestorationHouse It sure does. Horse hair plaster and even horse hair insulation in some of the rooms still. This is the old house right before we purchased it: ruclips.net/video/z_8M3xu1BZ0/видео.html
@@MissouriCrookedBarnHomestead That is wonderfully preserved......And that upstairs landing is to die for!
Your beautiful home just keeps you guessing. 💗
It does!
Mike be careful. Do some stretching before your endeavors.
Love your channel and your perfection
You're the best! Thanks for watching!
An energized pullchain ... that ain't good. Glad that got sorted out! Your neighborhood looks pretty with a fresh blanket of snow.
Tonight it's to have a wind chill of -15 !!!!!praying for you's.
10". In Canada we call that Wednesday! Lol
Yes it is!!
I don’t envy you trying to get the paint out of the beadboard grooves!
I don't either! :-)
Just joined in for this evening 👍 from Eastern, NC
Threw out my back reaching into the very back of my trunk to fish out a gallon of vinegar that rolled back there on the way home from Costco. :( We had two very heavy early rainstorms here in S. CAL, and now it's been sunny for weeks. The weeds are not usually this bad 'til March. We have local friends who moved to Greenville two years ago; now they're sledding at their place. I was a bit nervous watching you working up near that ceiling fan. I'd end up getting smacked in the face. :S
It was an optical illusion with the fan and I had about 6 feet of clearance. Thanks for asking!
Wow! This is a great video. I learned much. The electric was important. Thank you for the walk through. Your videos are fantastic. I always take away good information. Also I am so very impressed by both of you. You are ideal people. You would be perfect neighbors. You teach. Good Stuff. Thank you. Looking forward to seeing future updates.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
I don't know Mike, I think I would of resulted to stripper for that ceiling. Altho I know you get a big kick out of your heat gun.😂
You just had a typical Oklahoma winter. Sometimes we will get larger snowfalls but usually it is just a bunch of ice with 6 inches or less of snow on top.
Even us here in Alabama get snow.
The warm days melt the snow and then freezes overnight. It takes getting use to when it snows in the south. Moved from Rochester, NY to the Northern Neck of Virginia.
Is any of the paint you’re scraping lead? Should you be wearing a respirator to protect from any aerosolized lead paint? Just being cautious. I know the south used lead paint a lot longer than the northern states.
Your house will be so beautiful when you completed all your hard work! What an accomplishment to be proud of!
It's time to get serious with the squirrels. You don't want your house to burn down, or to get electrocuted! Squirrels are cute, but they're a nuisance! One almost destroyed a window in our attic before we caught it.
Thanks guys! Another great episode! Can you believe you've made 66 videos? Been with you from the start- can't wait for Fridays!
We have a house in Virginia built between 1920 and 1927. We came across several places where there was still power present after cutting the power to a given fixture. We found an electrician familiar with practices in our area when the house was built - circuits were deliberately crossed in at least 2 places in our house to reduce the amount of wire needed to wire up the house!
WoW! We had a house once that had a circuit come out of a breaker and out to the kitchen outlets. Funny thing was that it came back to the breaker box and connected to another breaker!
Why don’t you buy some cheep rescue blankets or tarps lay them on the rafters in the attic during this project to get some what of a barrier to keep the wood warm on the other side.
When electricity came to this neighborhood in 1946, the power company was supposed to ground the neutral at every pole with a transformer, but they neglected to do so. At the time, most of us had shallow wells with water pumps connected by plastic pipe, so they weren't grounded, and in several houses the copper house piping became energized. I had to wear gloves to touch the outside spigot, and a neighbor would get a tingle when they took a shower. The power company eventually remedied the problem. I wonder about your energized light pull chain. I've never seen a wiring system with a fused neutral.
I can’t wait for the finished room. It will be beautiful! You are such hard workers, but take care of that back.
Not sure what you’re expecting for this weekend, but this is weekend #3 of ice and snow for us and I’m sooo over it! Tired of getting everything ready in case of power outages again. At least in the North the houses are insulated and stay warmer without power. With no insulation here, the inside drops quickly and to really cold temps. I guess I’m just paying for the past 6 years of pretty tame winters and I shouldn’t complain since it got nice and warm again in between storms. I think I’m going to invest in some ski pants like yours, Jeanie, for future use!
Glad you found the problem with the fuse and got it replaced. I’ve forgotten everything I knew about electricity, but remembered enough to follow. I’m with the other poster and hope the culprit is RIP! But you might want to have a look - that’s a pretty nasty smell…
Can’t wait for your next video! Hope your area is sitting this round of storms out and that you’re nice and toasty again! 💕
We are clear and dry right now. Snow pants are a great investment!
“It’s like the Michelangelo in reverse” 🤣
I love all the wood under that paint. Are you worried that any of the paint is lead-based?
We don't worry too much anymore.
It definitely gets cold in the south😜
Thanks for having us over! Stay safe and warm. Love from Michigan.
Thanks for coming! Love back to ya!
Great video you two! 😂 My back went out when I was picking up my daughters Minnie Mouse suspenders! (She was 9 months old when this happened) I ended up on the floor! Couldnt get up and walk! Turns out I have a herniated disc, and have been dealing with it for years. Im sorry your back went out. Maybe the good Lord was telling you to take a break for a bit?? 😂 Glad youre up and at 'em again.
Thanks for the scraping ASMR, and relaxing enjoyment.
Blessings to you both,
RAINcouver💖
Thank you Heidi. I'm feeling much better now!
Please purchase those safety support struts for your scaffold very soon. They are well worth it. Surprised they are not sold with it as a safety standard feature, quite frankly. Mine was - but AUST. Is very nanny state when it comes to many things. I don’t mind it when it is about workplace equipment safety.
It's stable at this height. When you add the next level, you have to install struts. This system will go as high as three sections.
Will this be your permanent home? Do you have rooms that are completed? Do you have to run new wiring since I'm suspecting it's still knob and tube? And I agree, don't paint woodwork!!
It's not a permanent home, but it's home for now. The room we're working on is the only one we've been restoring so far.
Very scary stuff with the electrical. ⚡That wood sure looks beautiful under the paint! Can't wait to see more. Thank you for not playing that tinny 1920's music in this episode. It drives me bonkers! 😂
😂 I love it! Maybe they can do every other week!
@@Lucinda_Jackson I like it as well.
You just never know with old houses, well, any house I guess where or when electrical problems will occur. And the paint removal expedition sure has come a long way. Will you be varnishing or protecting the wood? You learn something new everyday snow in the south? who da thunk LOL. I'm looking at major snow banks right now in Ottawa. PS you will have to stop picking up heavy objects like that LOL hope you heal up quickly.
Lol!
you lost me. my brain doesnt not operate with this technical stuff. it only operates on minutia. like details that no one else thinks of.
those dang SQUIRRELS!!
I just found out they make a bracket that holds your infrared gun against the wood that enables you to heat the wood ,move it to the next spot while you scrape the heated wood you moved the gun from. Thereby speeding up the process. Just thought I'd pass along the tip.
I think he's discussed this before. It works in theory but in practice it's hard to multitask - too easy to overheat the paint/wood while you're concentrating on scraping.
Did all the blooms on the bushes die off due to the snow? I always wait in anticipation for your Friday videos. Sounds like the weather is a bit like menopause, hot to cold to uncertain. The crackling of the paint sounds like rice crispies. How do you get the tiny little flecks off the wood, sanding it? Why can't you sand the paint off with a fine grain of paper?
Well the Fan is cooling also. So ya shut off the fan that my help. O lord you need to do some more research, there has to be a faster way to srip all that paint in your home. For goodness sake that will take a life time to get it all off.
It doesn't take as long as it looks. We only do about 1 hour of scraping per week. If we would just get busy......
Not recently, thank goodness, but in days gone by I have had my back go out just binding over to put on my socks!
Just my opinion but I would do new electrical before I did any other improvements
Are you sure you want to scrape ceilings? I say, give them a quick sanding and paint them! Life's too short!
Looks like I will be getting another round of snow in just a bit. Last week’s still hasn’t melted yet
Wow! We're all dry down here.
Try with ceiling fan off…maybe it won’t cool off so quick
Sunny and 8 degrees in Northern Ohio! It’s been a real old fashion cold winter this year
Brrrrr!!!
Stray Voltage. You can measure voltage less than the 110 volts on items due to inductance. There will not be amps with it but inductance can put voltage on items that you thought should measure zero. There is also harmonics that can put stray voltage on wires. Harmonics is more of an item you find in commercial buildings.
A corroded connection can cause fuses to go and explain odd voltages. The resistance of the connection gives strange readings on meters. I chased down a lighting circuit that had 110 volts but would only light certain fixtures. The ground was becoming the neutral path with the corroded neutral connection. Once I found the bad connection everything worked and the guy was happy to have his lights back. When you switch over meter feeds on the panels you should consider this. Your existing meter and panel has a ground rod connection. The new panel and meter also have a ground rod connection. You should not have both. After you make the old panel a sub-panel, the ground should come from your new panel and not connect to the old ground rod. If it stays there becomes competing paths to ground. Nice to see you refer to the code and explain to those who do not know.
It's always satisfying to solve a good electrical mystery!
Yes. it gets cold in the south. Hopefully you guys can get the electricity done soon. That had to be scary. Take care be safe.
Great job figuring out the electrical problem! So great to be able to do that instead of having to call someone! Saves time and money. The squirrels would frustrate me so much! Nobody eats them anymore, thats the problem! 🤣🤣🤮
I wish somebody would eat these ones!
Welcome to winter in the south, iced snow slushies! Hope your back continues to heal, Mike. Ouch! Those squirrels, good grief. Does the whole neighborhood have same squirrel issues or are you guys just the unlucky ones?
It's hard to say. Nobody here has mentioned squirrel intrusion.
I so enjoy looking forward to Fridays and seeing what you are working on. Question once all the paint is stripped. What color of stain have you chosen?
It will match the color of the downstairs hallway.
@@1834RestorationHouse so it will be dark? I love the dark rich look. Can't wait to see how this room comes together.
@@angiebrockett7621 There's a wonderful dark wood tone on most of the ceilings. That's the look we're going for.
Excellent video thank you. I was wondering how you two were doing with the weather saying a snow storm was heading your way. Since you're grounded lol can we get a extra video anytime soon hint hint.
Next week's video will be a good one!
Hey, I hope y'all got to the store, to get milk and bread ! Before the bad weather .That's how we do it over here in Tennessee ! Ha Ha Even if you don't need milk and bread, just go any way . Love that wood !
We did just fine. :-)
That looks easier than using stripper
It's less messy and there's no chemical fumes.
Hello to both of you from chilly -29 in Quebec. So sorry, I can’t get upset about your cold spell. I have had my roof swept of snow. First of 2 or 3 more. Mike, where did you learn about the electricity. I am so impressed . I always call my electrician The room is looking great. I can’t wait to see how you get the wood to look like the rest of the house. Have a great week. And dress in layers!
I've been working with electricity since I was 9 years old. Stay warm up there!
How about the window frame? I bet you would. #restorationporn lol
I TRIED STRIPPING MY BASEBOARD ON MY VICT HOUSE WHEN IT WAS 10-15 BELOW; IT WASN'T A GOOD IDEA! HOW HAS YOUR ELECTRIC BILL BEEN SINCE YOU STARTED WITH THE STRIPPING? GREAT VIDEO. THANKS.
WHY ARE YOU YELLING?
Sketchy wiring is so much fun, Not!
Probably need a 20A fuse on that lighting circuit.
Mike, I’m concerned about your inserting a 30 amp fuse on that circuit. The conductor did not appear to be a 10 awg wire. You may want to replace that with a 20 amp fuse.
Yup should never put in a 30. Always a 20 on a reg room circuit.. Being an oud house they have 3 rooms on one circuit and probably kept blowing the 20 so they remedied that with a 30
Probably so. I suspect that somebody shoved a 30 in there not realizing that size matters.
It's "the night that the lights went out in Georgia"...or in this case...South Carolina.
yes! Fortunately, nobody died this time.
@@1834RestorationHouse 🤣😂Good point.
That’s called a Hollywood
You may have addressed this is another video but as I’m watching I can’t help but wonder if you are worried about lead in the paint. You work is meticulous and I am enjoying watching the restoration process. Be safe and take care.
The danger from lead paint is when dust is created and inhaled. The infrared heat process makes the paint come off in large flakes that simply fall to the floor. Another thing....not all old paint has lead. Thanks for watching!
They say watching paint dry is mind numbingly boring! Taking it of though is very very satisfying! especially if someone else is doing it lol
Lol! Glad we can satisfy you!
Yes, welcome to the south. In the early '70's I was going to college in Tallahassee, FL and it snowed with everyone rushing out of the dorms to see it at 2 or 3 a.m. Being I grew up in NJ, snow was not knew enough for me to get out of my warm bed. What really surprised me was in Jan 1977 every state on the East coast got snow, with Ft. Lauderdale and Miami even getting flurries. That time it was about 11 in the morning which you know had to be really cold as that hour is usually warmer than 2-3 a.m. When watching the weather channel and seeing snow to hit your area I wondered how the camellias would fare. In Orlando/Tampa area we try to cover our sensitive plants with landscape blankets and old sheets. Your "grand dame" blew the fuse to tell you something was very wrong with your electric circuit. As you said that yellow fuse was "an antique" and probably so old it just gave out! Good thing because you were then able to figure out the circuit mess up. I don't know if that is 'fixable' but I'm sure you will have it corrected in time for the inspection.
It was really a surprise to see snow here. I always visualized SC as being warm year round. But it does have a lot more nice weather than the northern states that we've lived in.
@@1834RestorationHouse lol. It depends on what you consider "nice weather." I was in endless summer in desert and islands for decades. Finally moved to snow. To me it's much "nicer" being cool. Shoveled snow today.....not my favorite thing, but better than being hot.
LOL I've changed many of those fuses in the course of my life. Quite a jolt when you called them "antique"
I hope that it's not too mean to say that I hope that the squirrel bit it. He was a career criminal anyway 😁 So sorry that you put your back out of whack, Mike. My husband walked into the kitchen and turned the corner and snapped a bone in his foot. I hate to say it, but man, we're hitting that age. Don't you hate that? It's like just when you get really good at things you have to slow down a little bit. I sure hope that you're feeling better now. Wow, Jeannie I'm impressed at you going after all the schmutz with that shop vac. On a scaffold! You're good! I loved your huge smiles when you looked around the room. It's so worth it when you see that beautiful old wood. I hope you've warmed up there and you've got good weather. I'm waiting for us to get back into the 70's. It's nice when you can wear shorts year round. The house looks great! That inspector is going to take one look at your electrical panel and go man, you did that yourself? You did such a fantastic job, it's a glance at it and pass it.
I'm doing much better now, thanks for asking. We had our electrical inspection....See it next week!
Shoot you guys may have a fried squirrel up in the attic. Where I come from we call that dinner. 😜
Lol!
Awesome , can't wait for the next video... ♥️ You both!
Yay! Thank you!
Clear workspace, clear mind. It really does make a difference even if you spend more time cleaning :)
Totally
No music?????
Your fuses. Aren’t antique. They sell the exact ones you have today in electrical stores and I think even Lowes and Home Depot still sell them. The yellow fuse that blew in your home was a “ slow blow fuse”. Usually the slow blow fuse was used in circuits that have ac unites or electrical motors like your well pump where the start up surge can blow normal fuses over and over, which is why the slow blow fuse was used. Why he other fuse your dead circuit is a mystery to me. Thanks for sharing all your hard work. Wish I had neighbors that care about doing the right thing like you feel like do!
Just because you can still buy them doesn't make them any less outdated. I have a battery charger which uses the same type of fuse. It's from the 1920s. Having a national grid was only a 10 or 20 year old idea at that point. Even the humble light bulb holder/socket has almost completely gone the way of the dodo here in Australia already. Instead light fittings are almost always LED and fully integrated - when the LEDs die you replace the entire fitting. A standard wall plug and socket is located in the roof space. The only place you'll come across an edison screw (or the more popular bayonet here) is in a freestanding lamp.
Great job
How close are we to the 10,000 Revel ???
Very close! We tend to lose a few subs. I think people are subscribing and then changing their minds.
@@1834RestorationHouse Are you planning a live chat to celebrate? That would be really cool. I'd love to hear if you have a color scheme in mind for the interior and what Jeanie's plans are for the kitchen, because she cans so much. She really needs a butler's pantry. From what I remember, the counter space is limited.
Was the ceiling in the room where you’re working originally woodtone?
Yes, it's coated with shellac under the paint.
I forgot are you planning to wallpaper the paint removal room
Yes.
Great job guys xxx ❤️😘
Is it back feeding
We're not sure what happened.
@@1834RestorationHouse glad you got it figured out , it's not good with electric and stay warm. It was 7 degrees this morning when I went out
Looking great!
You should have been in Texas last February. The electrical grid went down during cold in the 2 digits F. Really cold for several days in South Texas. We had a whole house generator installed last July. It will also be great if a hurricane or tropical storm hits this part of Texas. The generator also increases the value of the house.
Everywhere has its Mother Nature problems. Protect yourselves if you're going to like somewhere for a while. We had this house built 25 years ago.
Everyone keep safe this winter. ❤ 💙
Hi Judi, we're in Galveston and that ice storm was a monster. We lost power for 5 days and you're so smart to put in a whole house generator. That's still on our to do list. Crossing fingers that we don't get more weather like that or another Harvey. I hope it's warmed back up for Mike and Jeanie.
lost a neutral wire some were
Correct! The fuse on the neutral side blew first.
I hope you tested for lead before you heated it and scraped.
No. The heater doesn't get hot enough to vaporize the lead (if any is present).
Are you planning to insulate pipes (or new pipes, if you are going to change them out) that are beneath your house or have hot tape? (as relates to the outside winter temp)
No it doesn't seem to be a problem.
I had two of those porcelain fuse blocks in my two unit house. Mine were in the basement mounted in a black enameled steel box. At some point they upgraded the original 30 amp 110 volt service to 60 amp 220 volt. With mine, they just upgraded the incoming service and main switch, and attached the new 60 amp fuses to the porcelain fuse blocks. My fuse blocks might have been a little newer since they had a neutral bus in the center, and screws for the neutral circuit wires. They also had a thin bakelite cover over the terminals. It's a two unit building and they only had two circuits for each apartment, plus an added single fuse with a flip cover for kitchen outlets in each unit. When I redid the service, I kept the old fuse blocks and have them in my collection of electric antiques. Fused neutrals was common practice before the mid 1920's when NEC outlawed it.
Wow! It's hard to imagine having only 30 amps to play with. A toaster and a hair dryer would bring it down.
@@1834RestorationHouse It was two small two bedroom apartments, with gas stoves and water heaters, but still seriously inadequate! Each unit had a 60 amp pull with two fuses, but only one of the fuses in each one was used! Yep it was all 30 amp fuses on #14 wire! The added on kitchen circuit was wired with #12 but there was a 30 stuffed in there too. Not sure why they didn't change out the panels at the time they did the service, however not doing so left me two nice antiques for my collection!
The paint scraping sounds reminds me of one of my elementary school teachers who used to scrape her finger nails across the blackboard to get our attention! Lol!
It was usually the kids in my school!
Do you think the wood has always been painted? Are you restoring back or just like the wood look?
It is finished in shellac under the paint which means it was not originally white.
@@1834RestorationHouse Thanks for taking the time to answer. Can't wait to see the next video. Stay warm.🧡
Just wondering why you had the fan on in the room that was cold and you were trying to strip the ceiling? I would have turned it off.
I would reverse the fan to you hot air up.
Mike did say it was very cold in the room so I don’t think that would have helped
