    Hi Laryssa thanks for the video its full of great advice. I am in Southern Australia where we are just coming into spring and yesterday I caught my first swarm and successfully got it into my single box hive. I have no idea or very little knowledge about beekeeping yesterday was day one. So looking forward to what's ahead and fully expecting some disappointments but keen to learn. This is something I have wanted to do for a few years and now and am very excited. Hope my new bees are still there at the end of the week. Thanks again and looking forward to learning as much as I can from you.

    Banana plants behind you. I moved from central Illinois to north Florida . I am not familiar with summer or fall necter runs, are there any? Good starting video, it's very helpful information.

      In Florida you might see the Brazilian Pepper tree. That is the biggest source of honey for us on the Big Island. Produces a honey that takes a really long time to crystallize. Bees also love the citrus trees and mesquite. Here in HI, we also have macadamia nut honey and silver oak.

    where do you store your extra honey frames after you extracted the honey? And I was given some old 9" and 6" frames. some of them were found in the tall grass, with weeds , mud on and some frames were chewed, will you re-use them ?

      @@BeekeepingMadeSimple can I start with just one deep instead of two and one medium then add mediums as needed? Or do I need to start with 2 deeps?

    • @LaryssaKw
      @LaryssaKw 3 года назад +2

      @@GillFarmsDairyGoats I run my hives with just one deep and then shallows. That's the way the farm I used to work for ran their hives. I find it WAY easier on the back. In my opinion, you can use whatever size box you like. I don't think it matters much to the bees. Some people run all mediums. This definitely makes it easier for making splits and swapping frames as needed. If the weight doesn't matter to you, some people run all deeps and get more space from fewer boxes. If you're somewhere in the middle - you're ok with picking up a 45lb box, but would rather not pick up a 75lb box, then 1 deep and the rest mediums, is a good option. I talk about different hive body configurations in this blog post - www.beekeepingmadesimple.com/blog/medium-super-deep-hive-body . Hope it helps!

    I'm investigating keeping bees. I live in a forested area, so I think there is a good supply of nectar in the area. Also, I am planting clover in my back yard for the dry times. I live in an area where the winter is long, cold, and wet. I was looking into Hoover hives, which seem to cater to those in Northern areas. I was wondering what you think of Hoover Hives. Also, I am thinking about buying an empty 5-frame nuc. Our local beekeeping association has swarm parties, and I might be able to keep some bees in a good nuc, at least temporarily. Does a good nuc count as one of the 3 beehives?

      I just got a Hoover Hives setup. Great quality and the beeswax coating it came with is outstanding in a high rain area like I have (North Florida). Came with some extras that were not on the description list, metal mouse guard and a super escape. Very happy with our purchase.

    Question : what can I do if frogs are in the area of keeping bees?

    • @BeekeepingMadeSimple
      @BeekeepingMadeSimple  7 месяцев назад

      Depends on the frog, I suppose. The frogs in my area do not bother the bees. They are active at night.

    • @BeekeepingMadeSimple

      Nuc is short for nucleus hive. It is what we call a hive with 4-5 frames of brood and honey along with roughly 5,000 worker bees and one laying queen.
