- Almaty used to be the capital of Kazakhstan. Not anymore. The city was named Alma-Ata back then meaning 'apple-father'. But it's still the largest city and the most beautiful one. Almaty is surrounded by some amazing places. From apple orchards to canyons, and mountain lakes!

Я просто не могу понять к чему ты пишешь этот комментарий везде, город строили не только русские люди (но я не говорю что они его не строили, заранее, чтоб ты не начал говорить что я отрицаю что они его строили), а если посмотреть что из себя представлял Верный, и что из себя представляет Алматы в нынешнем его виде, это два совершенно разных города. Спасибо всем инженерам-строителям которые потратили свое время и силы на строительство этого города, но он уже как сто лет не называется Верным, и ты тоже, не застал времени когда он так назывался.

In Kazakhstan people buying apartments for mortgage, everything starting from phone to car is for debt, kazakhs tied to capitalistic system, comparing to Kyrgyzstan, where people work as a migrants and prefer to purchase something immediately with cash. And salaries are almost the same, and prices are high in Kazakhstan.

Almaty is a beautiful city, indeed, but European cities, towns, villages are extremely beautiful as well. Have visited Hallstatt, Austria; Lucerne, Switzerland; Prague, Czech Republic; Venice, Italy; Granada, Spain; Kalambaka, Greece, etc. and I have not been disappointed yet. I love Europe!

The author mentioned "Gorelnik" in the video. Few people know, but from 1943-1946, as well as later in the eighties, there was a school for mountain shooters. Soldiers who fought in the Caucasus mountains during the Second World War were trained there.

This is the first video of yours i'm seeing, so I am not familiar with your overall content, but I have to tell you i'm truly impressed how well you captured the city. How were you able to get so much "inside/local" information? There is a lot of details that you were able to cover and you did a great job. Also, your pronunciation of Almaty is excellent.

I lived in Almaty for four years. There are many things I love about the city - and I think there are more like 3 million people in the city (unofficially). It's a very 'hipster' sort of city. It's not unusual to smell marijuana wafting through the air as you walk through neighborhoods in the summertime. A lot of good restaurants, some very nice hotels with spaces for events/conferences, good food and spas, good connections to the surrounding countries, Europe and Asia from the airport, plenty of malls and good grocery stores. And, yes, the mountains are amazing - like friendly protectors smiling down on the city. There are even vineyards a couple of hours outside the city. The issue with Almaty is earthquakes. Also the fact that Almaty sits in a valley, surrounded by mountains, creates super bad polluted air in the winter. And the mountains come in very useful then. People escape for the weekend to one of the many small hotels or rent a cabin to get seom fresh air.
I’m curious about the marijuana part, isn’t it illegal in kazakhstan? How are people able to smoke it and not get arrested?
