    ------------------------------
One of my favorite seam finishes is the French seam, simply because there are no raw edges inside the garment. It's great on slinky fabrics like this silk charmeuse
Hi I’m Angela Wolf, let me show you how easy it is to sew a French seam.
If you use a plain seam you'll need to finish these raw edges of the seam allowance to avoid fraying.
But a French seam's seam allowance is already finished as part of the process!
Check your sewing pattern to determine what the seam allowances are. I find it easiest to change my seam allowances to 1 inch. / Say my pattern has seam allowances that are 5/8 of an inch - I'll add 3/8 of an inch to each seam allowance before cutting out my pattern.
Unlike a plain seam, you'll start with the wrong sides of the fabric facing each other and stitch with a half-inch seam allowance
Trim the seam allowance to about a quarter of an inch
Press the seam allowance to one side - it’s a good idea to press from both sides of the seam just to make sure the fabric lays nice and flat
Now fold the fabric along that stitch line, enclosing the seam allowance, and press again. Use a tailor’s clapper if you have one for a nice crisp crease.
Next, stitch right along this pressed edge with a half-inch seam allowance, to encase the raw edges.
Press the seam allowance towards one side. Remember if you’re using this seam in a garment you'd press towards the back of the garment...
See how nice this looks, and it’s super easy!

This might be a dumb question, but why wouldn't you just sew a quarter inch seam allowance in the first place, instead of trimming it down? Is that just considered too small of a seam allowance to sew? I don't get it.

Trimming is a waste of fabric and should be avoided. Her seam allowances are huge and unnecessary. You’re right, start with 1/4”. You can find better sewing techniques on the fashion incubator website. Cheers.

What is your normal seam allowance? Then take two pieces of scrap fabric with straight edges. Take a ruler abs draw a line 1 inch away from the raw edges of both scrap pieces. Then with wrong sides together basically just do some trial and error stitching. Many years ago when professionally making children’s clothing with store bought patterns that came with 5/8” seam allowance we stitched 1/4 seams the first time and then flipped it to right sides together and did a 3/8” seam- so you end up with thst final line of stitching on the 3/8 seam right where the 5/8” seam allowance called for. Basically just figure out how skinny you can comfortably make your first seam and then how much you need for the second seam after flipping it right sides together - ideally you don’t want to have to trim your first seam BUT it’s also critical not to have your raw edge fray and leave strings hanging out on the front side of your garment or pillow cover. Just figure out what measurements work best you abs your fabric and then add those two together. Then do a little math to figure out if you need to add any to the regular seam allowance

    Hi,
I’m trying to figure out the French seam process. I can’t seem to figure out how much “extra” to add to seam allowances to make up for the French seams.
Example: if I am sewing a rectangle that is a finished size of 8 wide x 5 height and it will be sewn on the bottom and sides, but not the top, and I am using a ½ inch seam allowance on the bottom and sides, I would cut the fabric 9 x 5.5 (hope that’s right).
But if I want to add French seams on the sides only, do I need to cut the fabric larger? This might have a simple answer, but it’s new to me. Thanks so much.

      Barbra
It's really sad the RUclips person never answered you a year ago.
I'm sure you've mastered it by now, but for another person looking at this question, instead of doing 1/2" go smaller. Make it 3/8"
&, personally, I like to trim the seem allowance to 1/4" or 1/8" so when you flip for the final stitch, it's not so bulky.
