I met Bernard Hinault a day or two before this race, while he was out doing a training ride. My RUclips profile picture is Hinault and I on the Air Force Academy grounds.
Hard to believe it was 35 years ago. I keep looking for myself and my friend Bill along the course. I got some snaps of the riders and the peloton that day, wish I would have taken more!
Thanks for this! A few of us were in the crowd there, cheering on Lemond. It's so nice to hear the experienced and knowledgeable comments from Connie Carpenter.
too bad she was constantly interrupted by the two clueless dorks. it's funny to see the support vehicles the race provided the teams... @41:13 the Italian director sportif in a Dodge Caravan ! lol
This day in 1986: My Father (an Engineer stationed there at the AFA!): Hey son, there’s a bike race today. Do you want to go see it? Me (@14yo): Nope. I’m going fishing. 😫😫😫😫 If I only knew then haha!!
It was a good day for Competitive Cycling in America. I imagine everybody who loves bike racing was there. I went to see how my former team mates, and rivals, would do. I had retired to start a family, but between the track and road, I had several former team mates and training mates, in the competition. I was very familiar with Greg LeMond, having first met him in 1976. I had some success against him, in criteriums. I was really hoping he would win. He had already been World Junior Road Champion, 1983 Professional Road Champion, so, he was already experienced. It was on home ground. Greg had been racing, and winning, bike races all over the American Southwest. He whipped my ass in Arizona, and in California, at Nevada City. I returned the favor at Solvang, but, enough of that. Ron Kiefel was looking strong. He was so close. LeMond was active during the race, but, in spite of his late efforts, he didn't bridge to the break. He could not shake the group. Hinault. was ineffective. Fignon the same. This course was difficult. Very wide open sections, undulating terrain, and both curvy and straight sections. The many windy and curvy sections made it possible for escapees to get out of sight. That is to a breakaway's advantage. I believe that if the race were to have been one additional kilometer, the chasers would have caught the leaders. It was a really good race. Argentin was truly on form this day. He did everything right. Mottet responded to everything Argentin threw at him. He rode Argentin's wheel very skillfully. It was cool to see Sarroni win the group sprint for the Bronze Medal, and with authority. I was with my wife and best team mate and training mate, and best man at my wedding, on the finish, 50 meters before the line, and the left side of the road. It was great to have this level of competition in the USA. The Time Trials were awesome. The track events were good too. I raced track as well. So, a very entertaining event. I actually got to ride with Eddy Merckx, on a ride from the track, up to Manitou Springs, and back. Eddy was very accommodating. And fit! It was epic. Please share your experience. I know many fans have stories to tell. Thank you.
It was always a problem with American TV audiences. The sport is way too nuanced for American viewers, and it was virtually unknown in the US in 1986, so they really had to dumb it down to the basics. Plus, this was one of the first cable TV broadcasts of cycling in the US. Brian Drebber was one of the pioneers of cycling broadcasts in the US. So yeah, it’s primitive. But to be honest, today’s coverage of cycling in the US hasn’t progressed all that much. The Amgen Tour and other Medalist events were done well, but the national livestreams are still quite rudimentary in production value and in the announcer commentary. At the time, this was a major jump in coverage. We ate it up.

Hard to believe the life direction Bruce Jenner would take.

Steel bikes are so beautiful! They should make steel bikes a requirement for a couple stages of the TdF.
Nice, I remember watching this supper late at night back in the day !

Moreno was suppose to be a star
But had a disappointing career
Disappointing? I don't know. He won in Liege 4 or 5 times. Also strong in shorter stage races. One of the sharpest in hilly one day races.
