Snare Battle! Does the finish on a drum really make any difference?

- Two fantastic Ludwig snares face off in this video, both have identical shells, hardware, heads, and snares. The only difference is the finish on the drum. The first snare is a Ludwig Black Beauty Brass on Brass edition. The contender is a Ludwig Polar-phonic with a painted shell. Is there really any difference?
If they were tuned to the same pitch this would be more insightful
Great comparison, thanks a lot !!
Glad you liked it!
2 gorgeous snares with great sound. I agree with 666, the enamel is higher and the black nickel sounds a little more muffled.
Thanks for taking the time to do this comparison.
White snare has a higher tone.
They were tuned to completely different pitches
See now you're going to make my buy the Polar Phonic😁 (I have that Brass BB). I also bought the Bluephonic from GC (But that's really a supra, and looks black). Speaking of GC or MF, they alway's give me 10%-15% off when I call them (No trade-in required). Thanks for the upload
thanks for putting in the effort, but the tuning is so off that it cannot be compared at all, especially not differentiating surface coating 🙁 you have an amazing collection and so many cool snare battles, but without syncing the fundamentals, its all really hard / impossible to compare. tension watch is just a rough starting point for matching them by ear in my opinion.
I'm not sure what you mean about surface coating? They both have the same heads? I'm not trying to tune them to the same note. I'm trying to show what note they generate at the same tension.
I definitely hear a difference in sound. The Painted white drum is " warmer ". That's what I'm hearing with the audio anyhow.
It would be helpful in your comparison videos if you did several tunings, ie: low, high, etc.
Bello/Magnifico.😯😯😯😯😯😯👑
sorry...but the pitch of each drum is tottay different... these snares are not tuned the same...so that's why you hear such a difference. If you can tune those 3 snares with something like tune boot and top and bottom skin than we can hear the difference. Now we hear difference in pitch....I mean you tuned one snare way lower than other. This video can not help people decide which snare sounds better to them :)
Bro the wires on the bob are tighter lol
Personally I HATE die cast hoops. Not knocking them everyone has their cup of tea I just don't like them whatsoever. And Ludwig comes out with all these great snares and they have either lol single flanged or die cast hoops on them. Wish Ludwig would give us the option to get just standard 2.3 triple flanged on there. Cool video thanks!
The white snare is just tuned higher, there is no discernable difference going by this video.
They are both identical tension (using a drum dial) and heads.
Maybe you can’t hear it as much through these videos the black nickel sounds more controlled. But the fundamental note on the white one is a bit higher.
@@drumthink9855 Better off with a Tune-Bot. You can definitelyh hear the diff in pitch between these two snare drums.
@@HadEnough745 - I have a tune-bot. What would be the point of tunning both snares to the same note, rather than the same tension? My thinking is that drummers want to hear what the shell will do given equal heads and tension. Heck, I can make any drum sound very good with heads, tunning, rims, and snares.
