Really enjoyed this talk. It puts a good perspective on cursing. Interesting that you mention the Mari Lwyd, the Horse that was thrown out of the Stable when Mary and Joseph were searching for somewhere to give birth to the more prestigious child Jesus, so the story goes. Ever since she roams the earth looking for somewhere to give birth to her colt. Sometimes the head is buried for a year, and only dug up at Christmas, it is a symbolic death and rebirth of the Underworld Goddess. Hugh Lupton wrote a lovely song that goes,
    The mare-headedd queen
    The Mari-Lwyd
I was mother of all the herds
Ten thousand years my shining foals
    Bridled with starlight
    Saddled with gold
    Leapt the divide
    Between living and dead
    Quickened the year
With each toss of the head
    Galloped the deep of beauty
    And never grew old
    Let me in!
    And now I am nightmare
    I am rattling womb
    The Uffington wraith I’ve become
    Forced into darkness
    You’ve made me a fiend
    Bridled with shadow
    Saddled with scream
    From window to window
    Traversing the night
    My face in your glass
    In a shudder of light
    Seeking that deep of welcome
    Befitting a Queen
    Let me in once again
    Let me in!

I think i got an explanation for Thorr's association with runes: Practicing shamanic journeying, i once encountered a Svartalf, and he told me that to activate a rune, or to "force" your magical will upon the world through runes, they can be battered into the object with a literal hammer or your fist, to symbolize the durable nature of runic spells. So Thorr as bearer of a metaphysical hammer and representation of passion and force would be a good god to evoke here.

She never explained why, just said it was evil and smacked me for asking more questions. It makes sense now. Doesn't justify the smacking, but it makes sense.

This is actually brilliant. It‘s not the cursers fault when the cursed does something stupid 🤔
    Edit: Uncontrollable farting 🤣
Increase of curses with Christianity - this expains a lot, especially that the curses were directly directed to a special person, not as a general warning anymore.
It is shifting the ill intentions from formerly the one who decides to do something bad to the one who curses the other person.

I'm curious about the warlocks, I'm wondering if the word _war_ is some kind of origin for shutting away. Knot magic ties something into the knots, locking it away, so I'm wondering if it is related to the word _ward_ , keeping something safe by shutting it away or warning people off. Interested in the etmology there.
Makes sense about the coming of Christianity changing old 'folk' beliefs, with the middle ages and the increase of knowledge and expansion of people's world and it's cultural absorption of new knowledge. Was surprised about the lateness of curses. When trying to find out about runes there is so much rubbish out there it's hard to know what to read.
Sorry, your videos provoke so many questions XD

I wrote you not long ago asking if you knew of any runes that were simply horizontal lines because I saw some at the giants causeway in northern ireland that I don't think are natural.
Thurisas rune could fit what I have seen because it would be 3d as it's carved into the face of the hexagonal columns.. and it also represents giants and destruction which makes absolute sense for that place..

Late viking age rune stones in Scania and in some places in Sweden used an intersting word. Scania belonged to Danmark in that time, some stones talk about that the one who destroys the stone will become a ”rata”. We do not know what they meant. In modern swedish ”rata” means ”to reject something or someone”. Vi använder ordet ibland på skånska.

It's from the Younger Futhark; it's called hagall, meaning "hail" - often symbolizing destruction to crops, and thus famine. In writing it represents the "h" sound. Its predecessor in the Elder Futhark was called hagalaz, which also meant "hail"(this is a good example of a typical linguistic transition from Proto-Germanic to Old Norse) and stood for the same sound. However, the shape of the Elder rune was quite different: it closely resembled a capital "N".

So Runic Curses were originally warnings and in breaking them the offender brought misfortune upon themselves as the runes were consecrated by a god. Never a specified cause or unjust. Because they were meant to be seen on the stone the proto-norse wasn't meant to be done in secret, but so the offenders would know that their actions would bring consequences upon them and would essentially be telling Thor to do his worse. Does the runes themselves have power then?

As an occult scholar, I have to say, there's definately alot of subjectivity slipping into parts of this video. People in older times (in general) were FAR less squimish about killing people and curses - especially of the death dealing kind are ubiquitous in the ancient (and not so ancient world). Hence notions of cursing being tampering with superior forces and so on and essentially a modern invention, primerily traced to Wicca, who in turn imported most of its morality from Christianity (and certainly not from any unknown witch-cults that somehow nobody ever noticed for hundrends of years). Morality is not inherent in magick and I dislike inserting moral guideless and arguements on discussing the occult. It's fine for people to have morals and opinions to guide them but occult scholarship should be objective and not discuss morality except where the people using spells and practices held specific morals. Therefore, while it's fair to say that curses appear to be rather rare in the Nordic context they must have existed, as they are vaguely mentioned by Odin:
    "I know a sixth:
it will save me if a man
Cut runes on a sapling' s Roots
    With intent to harm; it turns the spell;
The hater is harmed, not me."
One explantation for the relative sparcity of curses could simply be, that magic is frowned up. In most sagas heroes are loathe to use any kind of magic which suggests this was viewed as 'unmanly', a notion consistent with the old Norse ethic as presented in the mythos. In later accounts we can surely infer curses must have existed as there is specific occult technology against them (this being during the medieval times and the oldest actual occult manuals we know of). Note also here that jsut because something is taboo in a specific socio-political context that doesn't mean people don't do it. In a Norse-specific example out protagonist contacts a seidmann to essential curse someone, even though the sources are pretty clear that it's taboo for men to practice seidr (I forget the name of the poem sadly). Another thing we need to take not of, is that the occult has always filled two specific niches. Firstly it's empowering and it's historical purpose has always been to empower people to solve their problems above all else. The second is that the occult has always been a liminal thing, flourishing in the outskirts of the societal norms, where society fails to provide solutions. In Viking age Scandinavia there's a socially and legally approved direct way to end someone you don't really like - you challenge him to a duel. This tradition is always described and having more binding power than actuall legal cases, hence there's a socially approved to way to kill someone you like - there's no need to resort to idirect ways to accomplish this feat.

Surely our pagan ancestors saw no difference in the “curses“ or “spells” of the early protestants when engaged in “prayer“... this must have not only seemed strange to them, but also extremely evil that it created a demand for updated and modernized pagan spells, or prayer.
