I think the back splits happen because he is only heating on the inside or belly, the side under compression. If you look at the failure in the picture it occurs on the outside or back, the side under tension. IMHO, if you applied the heat more evenly and particularly on the far side some of the excess tension will be released. However if you into bow making then you will not want to loose the tension in the back of your bow. In this case during the heating and forming process you only want to release just enough tension so the bow will not fail when fired.
It would be useful to find out what Victor is getting the surface of the culm to, temperature-wise. If the culm would not dry out too much, putting it into a large solar kiln with an elastic forming jig and curve the culm more slowly. No danger of charring, and perhaps fewer failures since the temperature would be more uniform, not focused only on the inside of the radius.
Pablo Dal Monte the operative words are, located warming, if you boil the entire piece you dont have control of the bending, you need to make soft the exact spot where you make the bend, the steam or boil process is useful for make flat decks
That's not the way bamboo grows...it grows too fast for that.. On the other hand they use box forms on sides to make bamboo grow square as it gets bigger diameter ... Lateral growth would be too fast to make much difference. Maybe a little..?
Very labour intensive and expensive to just bend a single piece of Bamboo! There has to be a quicker way of doing this, maybe by steaming a bundle all together in some sort of container and then bending them?
Guru of Random is green bamboo, if you use a dry pne you need to soak it in water one die for make fibers wet and elastic again, thats why it looks shiny in the first heat
We could use a rocket stove to heat the bamboo. The fuel would be dried bamboo. I use dried bamboo all the time in rocket stoves and mass heaters (if you use a "J" tube, it's even gravity fed)!
Hey Alexander. I have often thought bamboo offcuts would be an ideal fuel for a rocket stove. Do you have any links to a favourite design? I have a small bamboo finca in Panama and would love to build one.
How stiff is the bent bamboo after it is bent? I would like to use this in the course of making a recumbent bike frame. Also I assume you have to start with green bamboo?
That was AMAZING..!! Thank you for sharing this video on how to do this. I'm building a tiki hut out of bamboo and definitely needed to see how this "bending technique" is accomplished. Thanks, again..!!!!
Labor intensive isn't this? How about we use the sand method and get pvc pipe that is wide enough to accomodate three of this diameter bamboo, cap the end of the pvc with small drip holes at the bottome for condensation and excess steam and hook it up to a little electric steamer or use gas stove to generate steam. Seems more practical.
Esuper1 it binds form faster than traditional woods like cedar.. Even with hardwoods like teak, mahogany or even oak, it takes a long time to steam because of thickness.... Dunno how it would be with the set time of bamboo...
@wingituk The bamboo should be around 2 " or smaller. As it gets larger it gets more difficult.

This is an excellent video that rally shows how to work bamboo.
would it work with a jig?

ok thank now if you make a jig could use bigger size of bamboo as you make it larger?
You can make a jig to bend out standard curve.
Sir please explain if you have easy way to bend bamboo
i know this is 9 years old but what's the purpose of filling it with sand?
oh, never mind
Why fill with sand? I don't understand
What about boiling it or steaming it ? that usually works with wood. Would it spoil the bamboo?

wouldn`t ya be able to start the shape of the bend you want when it is a young bamboo plant thus and let it grow into the bent shape ya wanted?
***** it seems to me really innovative, should be tried
yeah..I was thinking it would be fun to grow a house
hahahah
I`m serious...LOL

Oh, and also. When bending bamboo - does it have to be fresh bamboo or a set of canes that have sat around for awhile?
Fresh is more flexible
I hope he doesn't get too close to the propane?
How does the bamboo not catch on fire?
Guru of Random is green bamboo, if you use a dry pne you need to soak it in water one die for make fibers wet and elastic again, thats why it looks shiny in the first heat
que tipo de gas usa?
gas propano
That's an insane amount of work and propane just to bend a stick.

Ivo Bass o meu bambu já nasceu torto. Só fica reto quando enfio no buraco. De preferência no cu dia outros

It might be wise to edit out several minutes of things like tapping the sand down...
Is more insane your car. Or do you walk to work?
This is too long to bend a bamboo any body have easy way in less time to bend a bamboo please explain me

c siebester bamboo is HARD AS FUCK. It's been compared to steel in regards to tensile strength.
Watch videos on how difficult it is to break bamboo
You need to see my vlog of how it's done here in the Philippines, it's slightly different to this!
link?
what are product use under bamboo bending\
Do they start w/ green or dried bamboo?
SuperBardley Victor started with green Bamboo.
Thanks for the video, quite interesting!

THANK YOU ...VERY INFORMATIVE
The professor would have worshiped you
es un vuen trabajo
maybe a funnel would work
This is the same method for bending steel pipe.
It is still very stiff.
I have seen this done in 3 minutes.
wow
the important question is why is he wearing such nice pants while working?
Porquè es el hefe, the boss lol
Maduro antes era artesano de bamboo , Maduro was
that is very very expensive
People here just heat it on a wood fire. I use a paint stripper.
too much expensite in this time ...
Over hot coals.
BAMBOODIRECT I hope you realise you are just making random comments and not replying to individual comments
It would be LOT easier to boil the bamboo in hot water and then bend it.
+Mike Martin For how long?
+Mike Martin That is how it was done in its heyday of furniture making.
Make us a video like Gib did Mike Martin.. show us YOU know what you're talking about. Thank you.
@@cleenton ?. That's basic grade school science knowledge... why would you need a video for that?
Need expert men to band this.
I don't own a car. I ride my bicycle to work... Nice try, though!
I'm at 5:49, I'm so bored I'm going to kill myself (take that damn rattle away from him!).....good info on bending bamboo:)

nice yob bravo-croatia -.
