Toyotaro style is very good… but the first drawing reminds of me 2000s anime more than original manga…

Maybe worth noting that this was Akira Toriyama's style back in the 90's. it's possible/likely he can still draw in this artstyle, but if you look at all his artwork, starting around 2010 or earlier, his artyle has greatly shifted in many small ways. look at any modern image of goku drawn by him that is closer to the present and you'll see a great decrees in mass, with more "softer/round" shapes and edges. (while I'm not certain if this next detail, is 100% true, from my understanding, it has to do with his work on the Dragon Quest video game series, which he has always provided designs and artwork for.)
I think it's motivated by fan expectations. Young fans prefer lean and less muscular figures. I don't.
@@RossoNero1987 idk if I'd call it a "young fans" thing. but it is a general cultural shift in Japanese manga media, it's less about muscle "bulk" and more about muscle "tone".
young fans might have had something to do with it (maybe encouraging it), but I think many Japanese artists also began to wanna draw this way cus they preferred it (Hirohiko Araki being an extreme example), not just cus of youth/generation.
Maybe it also has something to do with emphasizing swift mobility more easily.
P.S. for me, I like both styles, it depends on the usage/context. I like DBsuper's manga style being the way it is, because rn it's direction is emphasising "technique" and "inner growth" rather than just raw power/training.(with MUI being quite lean yet still toned and relatively bulky, but UE being a more balanced mix of tone _and_ bulk.)
I did read somewhere that he wants to shift the characters to be less muscular and more "realistic" even though i find this total non-sense because realistically speaking, people with THAT much training are supposed to be extremely buff. Trunks and goten are supposed to be buff as well since they trained with Vegeta and goten did with chi-chi/Gohan.
I mean Toriyama can decide w/e he wants of course but it kind of destroys the purpose of 30+ years training Goku and Vegeta alone went through or am i wrong? :D
@@OrdinaryApprentice99 yes but no, just cus they aren't bulky and are now more toned doesn't mean it can't represent their growth, people in martial arts are often more tonned that bulky (Bruce Lee, for example).
Not to mention, their ki is more so where their power comes from, basically the "abstract magical muscle", so while they can be extremelu toned or bulky, Ki is the main component (the physical appearance is secondary, example's of this: Moro, or Majin Boo, even first form cell), and as seen with levels of ssj1, Ki can increase muscle mass for more power at the expence of speed(that trade-off became obsolete with ssj2 and even a better level of ssj1, but it's an example that ki is kinda everything, muscle increase can be a product of string ki. It's an invisible muscle that makes up their real strength, and if not confirmed- then it's at least heavily implied that their "strength/weight" training is something to strengthen your ki, not necessarily excluding some additional muscle work- but if it was purely muscle work, they'd realistically be dead or their muscles would be beyond sore in a non-productive way.)
@@jeom3808 That's totally true and that method has been applied before with Goku for example on his Kaioken form which basically bursts his Ki above limits. Made him physically more buff in Z and in Super, that visual hasn't changed one bit but what i meant with that comment was the Visuals they had beforehand. Goten was muscular and pretty buffed for a kid so was trunks. Now they are litterally degraded to usual children. That's what i meant with Goku and vegeta as well. Gohan kept his buffed physical form while goku and vegeta have been heavily downgraded. It's basically the Art that changed not Lore-wise. It's no complaint though i'm always giving Dragonball content love :D

@@IPlayDB yeah DBZ was on newspapers and blew up on toonami and stuff and I remember watching some dbsuper episodes on toonami also on yt kids and some episodes on adult swim but DBZ was really a huge spotlight supers also amazing just DBZ hits different

Super proportions are too small and less muscular with less details
I feel like Akira Toriyama’s artwork makes his characters look like they do poses. While Toyotaro makes it look more fluid, as if the characters were actually doing the action. They are both amazing mangaka, but I can’t choose which is better since i feel nostalgic for one but I really like it when there is motion in someones art, kinda like the art in Jujutsu Kaisen.

I think you captured toriyamas style pretty well, I know the reference well, and you captured it very accurately, but I don't think you caught toyos style the same way. It may be the colouring, but it doesn't feel like something toyotaro would draw

I don't think you're doing Akira toriyama per se . I think you're pulling more from Yoshiyuki Yamamoto , Hiromitsu Shiozaki's earlier styles of early dragon ball Z on the left . But perfect toyotaro 👍 that's definitely his style.
Agree with the Toriyama stuff (although he is somewhere in the middleground between Toriyama and Yamamato. I dont agree with the Toyotaro stuff, that Goku looks off man look at it, his face got weird after he coloured it and his hair looks way to stiff, Toyo makes it more flowy. The body is a bit unbalanced towards the right.
Not gonna lie. The Toriyama one is really good but the Toyotaro one is really off. It doesn’t even look like the manga version but still both are good drawing. Just some constrictive critic

@@nombie1760 Sure, but for example, i could tell him that it would help if he based the artwork off of himself, as in a picture of him posing, to help him get the muscle contortions right… stuff like that helps out artists a lot more than telling them they aren’t doing it right.

There is no Toyotaro style. He simply draws that way because Toriyama-san has changed and he has to go by how Toriyama-san wants the style to look like nowadays. After all the man even fixes panels for him.

MUI goku might be very good looking and way stronger than dbz goku BUT dbz goku always hits different and makes me feel like I am in my childhood again , my precious memories
I think Toriyama style is better for fight scenes and showing off impressive muscle while toyotaros hair, clothing, and dramatic posing is a little better.
