    I think Yung Lean said in a fairly recent interview something like he doesn’t get why people call his early albums meme rap or whatever. It’s always been 100% genuine for him.

    Anthony, I think the reason people were upset because you treated Unknown Death as a joke was because it was sort of a cop out. A music critic not taking something seriously or crying "meme" to justify not reviewing something for real is not how music criticism should be. Just because the work is ironic/post-ironic does not mean it isn't serious artistically. Saying something isn't serious is like a defense mechanism for both artists and critics. Everyone wants their projects to be taken seriously from the perspective they intended and Yung Lean's perspective is not traditional. I disagree with your review but I'm glad you were real this time.

    • @Supik23
      @Supik23 10 лет назад +28

      I agree with you, Anthony views this album from a very traditionalistic point of view, for example ignoring the works of Lean's associated Gravity Boys. They are almost creating a new genre, only originally based on rap, moving further from it with every release. Maybe Lean started as a ''meme'' and a ''tumblr rapper'', but you have to see the whole movement to realise that this is much more than just a weak rap album. However I agree that the importance of Yung Lean in this movement is not proportional to his fame.

      Misha Emanoil I didn't and wouldn't pass off that Unknown Death 2002 review as "real criticism." It was just me having fun. Am I allowed fun? I've pumped out over 1000 serious album reviews. Lemme have my day in the sun and dance around with the memes in a field of carrot flowers.I didn't see the point in pulling together a musical criticism because it was clear Yung Lean cares more about his image than he does his music. Hence, there wasn't really much to pull apart in the music. I was letting memes be memes.

    Personally I think his "sluggish" style of rapping and his slightly off time flow bring out what Yung Leans music is all about, it helps it sound sad, if that makes sense. I was never really into him before I gave Unknown Memory a listen, being a fan of Burial, Portishead, Aphex Twin and other "ambient style artists" I thought I'd give it a try, listened to it, didn't really get it, but then you go back for more and it starts making sense and you can actually relate too it, especially when your feeling depressed or anxious. What do you think? Am I the only one who takes his music seriously, or?

I just understanded his music and take/took it serious. I kinda understand why people thougt of it as a meme, With the S P A C E D letters. Maybe lean realy wanted to express himself, or wanted to let know he was sad but kinda joked about it to cover it up Like S A D B O Y Z was seen as joke but later lean represents it seriously. 5 years later and pretty much anyone that has listened to and enjoyed cloud rap would say that he’s probably been one of the largest contributors to the genre. His sound has also leaked into current mainstream psychedelic trap and mumble rap with artists like Travis Scott (who was featured on this album which you failed to recognize), Lil Uzi, and Playboi Carti. What you said at 7:17 has not aged well and is completely wrong. Still agree that Leandoer isn’t the big star though as his producers are much more influential and impressive

      Yeah, there's something to be said about 'important' music regardless of if it's objectively 'good' or not. For example the early punk scene in the 70s was regarded by many as a few losers who couldn't play their instruments. The Sex Pistols blew up here in the UK and they weren't tight musically speaking- they were messy and unconventional thus written off by their contemporaries. But look at how we view bands like the Pistols now, now we can see how important they were musically. My point is that rating an album shouldn't just be done based on how tight you think the music is, but how important culturally it may be. Anthony has always downplayed Lean's importance and he ultimately will go down as someone similar to the Punk deniers in the 70s.

    Finding this album without prior knowledge of Yung Lean or his meme status gave me very a different perspective on this music. With the first tracks I listened to I struggle to decide whether it was horrible or if there was something to it that was just challenging my tastes. I ended up letting my guard down and have found that I really enjoy how his voice resembles a haze floating lazily over what I consider to be solid trap beats.
    Certainly whether one likes Yung Lean is a matter of finding the right perspective, but that perspective is not limited to enjoying it ironically as a meme.

He acts as if Yung Lean fans getting angry when he basically just called him a meme, and nothing else is a weird thing and that the fans are at fault? How about you grow up and try to widen your perspective on things? Why wouldn't they be angry? An artist whom they admire and take seriously has just been severely insulted by some bald music snob who think he knows everything. And you still decide to act as if it's obvious that he's just a meme and that's all he's meant to be? You need to learn how to get over denial.

    Anthony I love you but once again you prove that you cannot set aside the popularity and aesthetic of an album and just judge it on the pure sonic quality.
    Is Yung Lean a good rapper? Hell no. Is Yung Lean a good singer? Barely even with autotune. Is Yung Lean a good lyricist? Only in the ironic, satirical sense. But the cloud-rap/IDM-fused production are what MAKE this album great and make it a step up from Unknown Death 2002 and other cloud-rap in general.
    This is better than 6 Kiss because Lil B's voice doesn't suit the genre with or without autotune. This is better than Bones too.
    Maybe we shouldn't consider this to actually be a Yung Lean album, maybe it's an album by good producers and Lean's voice just blends with the dreamy, beautiful, immersive soundscapes. I think if Yung Lean wasn't associated with this album, or he didn't have the kind of image he does, you would give it a higher score.
    So basically what I'm saying is, SONICALLY this album is like a strong 7, but lyrically it's more like a decent 5. But the lyrics are not the forefront, and that's okay!! I don't understand why Fantano can ONLY like backpacker shit like Kendrick and Death Grips and Pinata. It's okay to have fun once in a while!

I know I have a lot of fun listening to Death Grips, Aesop Rock, EL-P, Billy Woods and whatever else people (who seem to have a lot of trouble understanding that other people might like different things than they do and have fun with different music than they do, which is pretty shallow) would deem "backpacker shit".

    it's a very acquired taste. I love yung lean and totally agree with the fact that a lot of it has to do with the instrumentals. But it's yung lean that rides the beats like no one else can. his flow becomes part of the sound. I can also relate to his lyrics that at face-value might seem like simply pop culture references but have unspoken connotations.

    (Old review comment) I think you've taken Yung Lean's music a bit wrong, SadTano. It's totally not meme-based, or meme-replicating, but because it's a bit low-brow and pop culture-referencing you may have considered it as so (holy hyphens, batman!). Lots of rap contains pop culture references and just because his rap is both popular and unskilled doesn't make it a meme. People, including myself, really enjoy the overall music and the aesthetic that his flow brings along with it. No irony or internet inside jokes necessary.

    It is clear that hip hop isn't respected as a art form by the fact that a critic/fan that expects MC's to have some semblance of lyrical talent get labeled a "traditionalist". Defending Lean is like saying a guitarist that doesn't actually strum the damn strings, but beats the instrument with a stick is "progressive" and trying something new, no matter how bad it sounds, repetitive it is, and how little skill it takes to do it. That's nonsense, and the people that say it can't possibly have taken the art of RAPPING that seriously in the first place. Young Lean, Future, Chief Keef, Young Thug, and a whole host of these guys are no more than buffoons chasing a check that's increasingly easy to get.

      ***** Thank you. And the issue isn't tradional rap. A lot of stuff that has made waves underground the last couple of years, like Das Racist and Death Grips and a whole lot of other guys are no where near "traditional". Danny Brown might be the least traditonal hip hop artist ever. But those guys have more skill, the lyrics are better, there on beat, there deliveries carry some charisma or some aggression.

    • @KevinJohn9001
      @KevinJohn9001 10 лет назад

      I agree with everything you said besides that part about Chief Keef. I believe he does have talent because he can write trap raps better than 90% of the people trying to break into that genre. (which says a lot about it lol)

      And don't get me wrong man, I don't hate on any of the wack rappers that's popping now, There have always been wack rappers, there are just more now than ever and most of the best one aren't allowed on the radio it seems. I go to the club like everyone else. If I like the dumb, simple song, then I like the dumb song. If I like Chop's beats and Mike Will and all that shit, I don't see a issue with that. I'm just not dumb enough to think the rappers on those beats can rap well. I don't feel the need to defend them artistically.

But I dont know why he so heavily said this was a meme rap album, it really is not. Just because his lyrics arent the most substantive, it still seemed like a genuine effort, and theres a lot of great songs on the project. and insane dynamic production

I guess the scene I'm referring to tends not to produce many full-length LPs, but it just seems wrong for artists in the vein of Noisia or Kryptic Minds to have absolutely no representation in your review catalog. Do I have to count Skrillex and Burial? I mean I love both of them but nah.
      The production values tend to air on the side of damn good and I think more than enough interesting tracks come out in between all the admittedly samey filler to justify the scene's existence.

      Ging! My opinion of Lean is that he's not a good rapper or lyricist at all, but Yung Gud, Yung Sherman, and White Armor's production is fantastic. So if the production falters, then the whole thing loses appeal. What I loved about Unknown Death was it's sonic and emotional variety in the instrumentals, but here, most of the songs have a similar dark and stuffy (or "sad") feel, the same amount of reverb on everything, and the same generic and uninteresting synths from track to track (the bland synth tones are the biggest disappointment for me.) So while I think the album was decent, I won't take a bullet for it.

    Yung Lean wasn't born on the internet, he was born in Sweden. He has a mind and a soul of his own. Don't be so disrespectful Anthony.
    Lend me your ear for a moment. If the production here is good then assumedly your issue is with Lean himself. You've already stated clearly that lyrical content can and will differ from decade to decade and Yung Lean's lyrics evidently connect with a lot of people around the world, regardless of the origins of their intention.
    That leaves Yung Leans flow/delivery, which I would argue brings its own sonic individuality and once again connects with a very current, youthful audience who are alienated with society. His lazy flow is of course a reference to other leaned out rappers that were an inspiration to him, but i feel it's as much a disregard of authority and the norms of society's (or the genre's) expectations as much as it was for the first artist who screamed down the mic in a recording booth.
    IMO this all comes together to create a fantastical universe where mindlessly nostalgic, nonsensical and empty lyrics begin to carry meaning through the parallels in society for the youth of today. All of this happening over some of the most contemporary and beautiful instrumentals heard in years.
    Cloud Rap is this decade's ambient house. The reference points for the formation ambient house were Brian Eno, Kraftwerk and Pink Floyd, whereas for cloud rap it's DJ Screw, Aaliyah and Three 6 Mafia. It's rooted in the feeling you get in your chest when you hear an angelic time-shifted sample strung over a drum loop cribbed from a song that may have had "trap" in the title (and if that doesn't make sense to you, you should probably look elsewhere).
    Hip Hop has always been an outlet for reflection on society. Lean and the Sadboys are this decades Public Enemy or NWA, not as cool in the traditional "gangsta" sense, but just as culturally relevant, if not more because his message transcends racial issues and becomes an existential one. Hip Hop has grown up in growing down.
    People might say I'm reaching here, but maybe they're not reaching enough...

    This is one of the worst aged takes I’ve ever heard on the internet. Lean is easily one of the most influential rap artists in the past decade. He created an entire sub genre of rap basically when he was 15 living in fucking Sweden.

    you see people say that yung lean sucks as a raper but his music isn't about the lyrics its about the vibes and astetic if you judge him buy his lyrics he sucks, but listen to him as if it is an edm dong and his lyrics are just another layer of the beat and it makes mutch more sense.

    I love how he, now 6 years later, hates on things he nowadays praises on all those new PC Music / hyper pop rappers/musicians. Yung Lean doesn't make cloud rap, he doesn't make hiphop. He made hyper pop rap 6 years ago

    Yung leans voice is treated as more of an instrument in the abstract beats that he uses. It's vibe music and if you try to analyze it you won't get it. Yung lean appeals to a sense of nostalgia with the clothes and Arizonas etc. Video game references as well. And that's why people like him. He's got buzz point blank period

    I don't really agree, I loved many of the songs on this album. Yung Lean reminds me a lot of the American kids I spent time in high school with so I can see more eye to eye with his music than older audiences I believe. His music is more personality than it is really hip hop music and that personality hits me right so I have to say, he's one of my favorite singers since this year started.
    I can't stop listening to his songs and I think this album would top one of my favorite 2014 releases.

  • @ozzyfranks
    @ozzyfranks 9 лет назад +4

    Fuck, stop talking about his lyrics and vocals, Unknown Memory is all about THE PRODUCTION which is on point.

    • @facemelt2753
      @facemelt2753 9 лет назад +4

      If it's all about the production why put vocals over them? Putting Yung Lean's robot monotone voice over these beats detracts from the experience. Rap music is supposed to be one third instrumentals, one third vocals, and one third lyrics. People like you that come for just the beats are ruining hip hop. You people are encouraging rappers to find awesome beats, which is a good thing, but not put any effort in what they say. Yung Lean fucked up by rapping over these beats, and Anthony caught him on it.
