Denmark Cancels International Study Spots - Why? (Interview with VIA UC Lecturer) 2021

  • 25. June 2021 was a day that raised controversy among many internationals and Danes. Social media of international communities was bombarded with news about the new ruling: everyone sharing their for- or against- opinion, with the majority blaming the government for this decision and Danes showing support for the community of international students.
    The new ruling implies that the majority of English-taught programs from academies and university-colleges will be reduced significantly starting summer 2022.
    So how did this come to happen...again? To find out, we investigated the topic and interview at lecturer from ‪@VIAuc‬ Flemming Bentzen, to get an opinion from the university affected directly by the change.
    Little correction to the continuation of Bachelor’s after top-up: it has not yet been decided if they will allow this, or not. Furthermore, it will always be possible to finish BA in Danish
    To clarify a statement: Agents in Eastern European countries offer high-school students different packages of collage applications. In the package 'garant' they guarantee you that you will receive a spot at a university, otherwise they have to reimburse you the costs - which naturally leads one to think that in order not to lose sales, they will get students to any university, regardless of the quality of either party involved.
    These agents are collaborating with the universities closely and therefore one hypothesis is that agents know which universities need students and, can therefore, send application on behalf of the high-schooler to selected university.
    Clip from the sales presentation of Scandinavian Study was used under a fair-use licensing agreement of RUclips. Link to original source: • Video

My current plan: I'm going to study bachelor's in Denmark, and then master degree and even a PhD in some other European or north American country. My question is that; hence these changes what's going to be different from my aspect, are there will be less chance for me as an international student to get in a uni in Denmark ? I hope someone will answer, and thank you from now you people for taking your time and helping...

    Without being biased by the fact that I got accepted to my Master’s at CBS and going to start in September, I strongly agree with your lecturer’s opinion. Got mine Bachelor’s degree done in London (being from Czech Republic) and perspective, new culture experience, different opinions, coming from other environments, etc… That’s what makes international students invaluable to the university. It is unfortunate to hear about some that are just using the system, however, it is a common practise in many countries, including mine, where universities are funded, moreover you receive other benefits to it… nevertheless, as rightly stated, even if only 20% would stay in DK (I believe the percentage must be at least a double, if not more) than they will repay for them all in no time - this is how the system works in the UK… Anyway, can’t wait to experience a life in Denmark. Cheers for the content.

    • @StudentSurvivalGuide
      @StudentSurvivalGuide  3 года назад

      Yes, I completely agree, unfortunately the number is indeed roughly 21% that remain in Denmark after graduation - but as the lecturer mentioned, this is enough to pay for the rest - I know people that are already working in Denmark for 2-3 years and they got to Denmark together with me. They work in IT companies and pay 10-15k in taxes every month, and will continue to do so for coming decades.

    I will attend via marketing management from this year . I was really saddened when I heard the news because i want to do the top up as well. I have already started to learn Danish because of this . ( even if the english thaught top ups would have been available I would have learned Danish . I will live in that country i would be an idiot to not learn it😂) In my opinion the goverment choose to do this because many people have abused this fantastic opportunity. That is why it frustrates me so much. Even tough I am still in a better situation since I know I have to learn Danish if a want to do a top up in Denmark , but those who have been studying there for a while and did not take the Danish language seriously ... well that is another story. I hope that everyone will be able to do their top ups somehow.

    problem in my view is not about investing 150 or 200 football fields to educate and potentially gain a good cohort of hard working taxpayers, but rather another 300-500 football fields spent on things like early warning surveillance radars to defend against well, Zee Russians....basically things which have neither long nor short term economic benefits, while also placing ourselves as target in case of potential conflict... and reckless spending list is not limited to that, unfortunately ;)
