His numerous critics’ choice and popular award wins over the years for best guitarist, best recording, best live ensemble, and best composer, stand as an affirmation of his stature in the world of modern music. Here, for the first time, Pat Metheny takes a break from his relentless touring/recording schedule and talks with us about his more than 25-year-long association with Ibanez and his signature model guitars.

I never forget a night back in 1988... I was an aspiring guitar player in stockholm, sweden, and went to a fabulous Pat M band concert at Draken (Concert venue) but had been told he might show up afterwards at Fashing (a small jazz venue) where his old girlfriend and jazzpianist, Elise Einarsdotter was playing with her band... I Had Elise as an ensemble teacher at the time.... So after the concert at Draken, me and my mate hurried off to Fashing and got a table right at the stage. After a Whille, somebody patted me on the shoulder, asking " Is this seat taken?" It was Pat himself :-) He sat down, and was the sweetest guy you could ever think of! He even gave me a few tips on playing the guitar and one of his picks, before he sat in with the band and blew the roof of the place :-) If Any of you ever get to talk to him, thank him from me!!! It made a difference in my life :-)

just bought my first Ibanez ever today. A pre owned akjv95 dal artcore hollowbody . I effortlessly started playing exactly like Metheny. It was incredible. Then the LSD started to wear off!

I was introduced to Pat Methany’s music in 1981, and he is my favorite musician. His music transcends time and has more depth than anything popular today.

Pat's the man and always will be! Very inspiring.
I first saw Pat Metheny at a small lecture hall at MSU in 1978. We sat up front on the floor with maybe 250 people in the room. He opened with Phase Dance with his guitar on a stand and that night changed my life for the good in a musical way that no other musician has even come close to. Pat's music goes to a place in my soul that no other music ever has. Thank's Pat and RIP Lyle.
I have a PM100 Ibanez guitar and I love it. I would like to know though why it has been discontinued. Also of what I remembered, Pat Metheny was approached by Ibanez and it took some prototypes and back and forth before agreeing to use the Ibanez brand. He didn't use a PM200 on his Q&A record because the PM200 was not existing at that time.
I know Pat is telling the truth, because he plays that guitar in most of his videos. That guitar is awesome 😎.
I love to be able to watch more and more interviews with PM. There´s the Beato Interview, the Polish Music Institute interview, the PM neuroscience conference, and more. Until recently, I thought PM didn´t like to speak to the camera, and I was wrong. He is so articulate with words as he is with music. Having said this, there is one interview that I really crave for: the PM hair interview. That hair has something to say and it´s time to let it speak!
How can he be that good. I mean how could he be that good being 21 years old and recording „bright size life“. Unbelievable...

Bright Size Life moved the development of the guitar in jazz on light years. Not just in terms of composition and instrumentation but making jazz accessible to a whole new audience. It changed my aspirations as a guitarist. I can't believe there is a guitarist anywhere in the world who can't appreciate Pat's playing.

Ive had so many guitars in my life I cant count them all. At 56 I could play anything I wanted and have several pricy guitars. I bought my first Ibanez in 2013. A 3570z. Its the only guitar I play now. I just dont have to think about my instrument at gigs, zero worries, never goes out of tune.

Pat's points regarding performance in varying conditions - I have quite a few low-end Ibbies and one jazz box - they all work consistently and are serviceable. They also sound like "me" when I play them.

Love to see his pedalboard, pedals & effects ( rack or floor ). Love Pat's playing. He is such an Airy-Jazz player. His lead-lines are always . . . Soaring.
He doesn't use pedals. It's just a neutral solid state amp that should be able to get really loud. There is a delay of around 450ms to give it some space but it's barely there. He splits his amplified signal into 3 where he would send 2 with delay to 2 other speakers. The idea is that this gets a big sound that fills the stage and gets interaction in the air. But, it's a sound that is just for him, in principle you will just hear a mono version of his sound, that interaction in the air is at the player's position and not captured by the microphones.
The other sounds which aren't clean jazz guitar or his acoustics are the Roland GR300 guitar synth (sometimes he plays that guitar without the synth sound), the Ned Synclavier II, the Roland VG8 (if you hear distorted like guitar tones, this is the unit producing that), and he played around with various midi devices to trigger non-guitar sounds like a piano from his guitar.
Love guitar music of all kinds and almost all musicians...Pat is my fav...helps that I’m a MO boy as well. Thanks for all the great creations and collaborations. You the man !

This is just incredible. Question and Answer wasn't my first Metheny album but it was the first album I finally understood swing.. Thanks to Roy Haynes. Can't believe this was the first time he used the Ibanez.. so cool.. btw.. had that album on cassette first then got the CD and played it hundreds of times..

Q&A was the first album on which he used ONLY the Ibanez - no? He'd recorded it before, but never only it and no Gibson?
yeah, pat used both the Ibanez and Gibson on Secret Story. Q&A was only Ibanez
On Letter From Home he plays a mini Ibanez archtop on the title track. I don't think he played the full-size Ibanez until Question and Answer.

Glad to know he plays ibanez these days, i listen but never realized what he played. Him, and Tosin my other favorite player, both on Ibanez. Now tosin has his own line of guitars though.... Still favorites. Would love to get one of these models like Pat's.
My first Jazz Guitar was and is an Ibanez Artcore 85. This after weeks of looking at Gibsons, Epis and others. It just sounded and felt better. And bought a nice delay unit with the money I saved.

Pat is a great musician; I have been à fan of his music for 40 years. In fact, I got to meet him and get his autograph under interesting circumstances in about 1989 in Phoenix: the band had à speaker problème while playing Last Train Home, so they stopped to fix the prob and to make up for the inconvénients of waiting Pat came out and sat on the edge of the stage and many of us got to go talk to him and have him sign our ticket stubs. Very nice guy and I thought it was à cool and classy thing to do since his fans had to wait.

that's strange, i've read different story about Pat's relationship with Ibanez in some jazz magazine interview with him. Like, they were sending him prototypes every once in a while, and basically chasing him to be endorser, but he repeatedly declined until they finally built him a prototype that was equally good as the Gibson he used. So, one of these stories might be bullshit.
+zismaer Yes, the story you cite is pretty much what I remember reading (yrs ago, probably in Guitar Player) about how Pat came to play Ibanez. The way I remember it is that each time he'd go to Japan they'd present him w/a new prototype until they got it right.
The other thing that doesn't jibe about Pat's story is that while he may have used this guitar for Q&A--and perhaps he always used it in the studio--for a long time he used to always play a double-cutaway PM100 live, either a natural one or a black one.
FWIW, in his current promotional pic he's holding his 175 (w/fresh tape covering the empty neck-pickup hole). Maybe he had it worked on to make it roadworthy again.
+zismaer Yes, I remember that as well. I think it is propably the real truth. This is a promo video for Ibanez where apparently the Ibanez people didn't want to put things like this, so they created a version of the story that sounds less "begging". I don't care about it anyway. The guitar is great, esp. the new PM 2-AA. The rest is just marketing blah.

Though speaking of marketing blah, I think someone is really missing the boat. Ibanez is making these pristine PM guitars but nobody is making a replica of his beat-to-shit ES175, complete w/ duct tape and toothbrush!
+fretbuzz59 Yes, you're right. But actually the funny thing is: I would appreciate the "trial-and-error"-Ibanez even more. Because it really shows the committment to satisfying Metheny and working on the details instead of just shipping something over saying: "This is it, take it or leave it!" Weird how markets seem to work. Or better: how marketing people think markets work.
Exactly. To that end, notice how Metheny artfully avoids calling out his 175 by name. He never directly refers to the model, instead variously calling it "my other guitar", "my main guitar", or "my previous instrument". At the behest of Ibanez, he's selling his signature w/out giving free advertising to Gibson. The inconsistent account of his origins w/Ibanez vis-a-vis his print account merely underscores this motive.
I LOVE Pat's music. My only wish is that his playing of the guitar didn't appear to be so excruciating.

Nice guitar, but I really don't like big inlays. That fingerboard is a nice slab of ebony, which I love the look and feel of. There should be an option to have either simple dot inlays or none at all (imho). Wouldn't argue about having either a bridge humbucker or a piezo in the saddles for adding some brightness and versatility.
+UnitedEffect I mean, it's a signature model. If you want something with different specs, Ibanez makes plenty of other models. They also have a custom shop.

Amen. I have an AEX 1500 that I've played for nearly 25 years now. It does a few weird things now, but it's still remarkably playable. Still, picked up an Ibanez Artcore AS73 a couple of years ago and it's been my main axe ever since. It was cheap as dirt, really, but tone for days.

For someone who never had lyrics in their music (and I remember reading somewhere that he did not like lyrics--"...it's all been said, hasn't it?..."), Pat is - paradoxically - something of a poet. I have loved his music for decades, but I think its also worthy the mention that when I read his interviews, I would hang on his every word--not even sure why? Could be the mid-western-honest-handshake-is-my-bond kinda thing, or the fact that he's so straight-up and economic whenever he does speak openly... But I remember listening to "Are You Going With Me" one evening back the early 80's; and aside from enjoying the obvious overt and subtle beauty thereto, I also was taken away by the title.. "Are You Going With Me?" Five small words (and a question mark)... Soon I'd be coaxed me into considering any possible scenarios--there were so many... Most of them were related to one fancying another person; doting them; perhaps wanting them; needing affirmation or affection, or... a COMMITMENT (*gasp*), etc. etc... Regardless, it was probably around then I swiftly realized what a wonderful artist and poet he is... From that point forward, I have always taken the time to look into his song titles-- and no surprise, I am smitten with a good portion of them... Thank you, Pat.

his original ibanez was documented and the pic I saw was a double cutaway almost 335 shaped but deeper with a single pup and was his backup for the Gibson. it was reportedly stolen from a 1980 interview I read
the original signature models from around 1990 had a kind of sharper offset double cut body and they also had the one he's playing in the line but at the time the black offset body one was seen with him most often

Whilst I feel both Pat & Sco could make a tennis racquet sound great, You have to give it to Ibanez for making some great jazz guitars. I mean that is what the law suit era was all about. I have some great "new" guitars but cannot fault an old 76 Ibanez Howard Roberts that I would never part with. Pat, Sco & Benson - sublime Ibanez players!
I have never seen, played, but MOST IMPORTANTLY! HEARD an Ibanez guitar that I didn’t appreciate. They may not be Martin, Gibson, price wise, however they sound just as good. Remember SOUND is everything! Pat Metheny is probably the BEST musician in the world, so don’t take it from me ! Ha! 😅

I've never understood why Gibson wasn't in front of this whole thing. There he was, album after album and picture after picture with his 175, young star, millions of fans. And they lost him. Scofield too. I do appreciate the intro to Ibanez though. They're great guitars.

But why did it take so long for Ibanez to finally make a fairly accurate copy of that guitar that was his namesake with them ?The reason I asked is because the guitar that you have in pictured in the video above wasn't really made by Ibanez for a long time. The reason I know this is because I bought a pat Metheny 10 which was a lot smaller . I thought that they did'nt make one like Pat Metheny's guitar above because he wanted to kind of keep his trademark sound. Subsequently they did make a bigger model of the Metheny guitars with a double cutaway which had a much nicer jazz sound .

My PM200 ( 2013 ) is an excellent guitar but the topkam breedte is not 43 mm as Ibanez says ! Is 44,5 almost 45 mm !

Please down put down all those years of effort and practice that Pat put into learning his craft, to simply reduce it all to "a gift" is like saying that his hard work didn't matter at all. But the thing is that Pat wasn't born with the skills he has now, he worked on them for endless hours every single day (and still does).
Why don’t they make A stock model that looks -like his prototype or the one he plays. Pick up further back as is on this Guitar. As far as I know all the other ones have it flush up against the neck.

I'm seeing a lot of different comments here about Pat Metheny, complimentary and sarcastic,
but the one thing I can say, seeing him here, is that it looks like he's in better health, getting it together.
The guitar looks really nice, but for me I'd sooner see some wood-grain or have some colour.
When Pat first came out, almost local for me, I always said that Jimi Hendrix with Jaco Pastorius on bass,
with Pat Metheny and Lyle Mayes, would be the first picks for the best band.
John Watt Interesting but I am trying hard to imagine Pat and Jimi playing together. It just doesn't seem to fit. Happily on youtube there is Joni Mitchell's 'Shadows and Light' with the three aforementioned plus Michael Brecker and Don Alias. For me the all-time greatest band. Or maybe Weather Report. Or......

I just bought that Ibanez PM200 NT Pat Metheny model. Does he even play that guitar? What I notice the most is the pick up placement. The model I have the PU is up against the neck. The one has is placed some distance behind the neck. Why did the move the PU for the consumer guitar? Anybody know why?
the original prototype had 20 frets. Yours has 22. Pickup is exactly in the same Pat's position. :)

Up with Pat!!! You know: I play bass guitar, but nevertheless I know a lot about jazz guitars; when I wanted to buy me one, after a lot of indecision and trials I got me what now is my treasured PM2AA and that is maybe the best guitar you can ever buy; not only "for the money": it is just marvelous. It plays like a dream and is very versatile anyway. :)

Sam Robinson i think it’s am improving on one of his tunes. I doubt anyone would know what song it was based on where they were in the song. Unless someone knew the tempo and some of those hits that were played.
