    Marek my favourite reviewer, honest to the core. I’ve been waiting for this one especially because it’s from your home country but what I can gather the TCross may be a better buy. The 4 wheel drive version of the Avenger coming later may tip it over the edge and beat the T Cross.

      I've seen those reports by Autoexpress, but I'm not sure they have the powertrain to apply here due to packaging. Whether BEV or PHEV the AWD would take up a lot of space.

    Thanks for the review Marek. Nice to see new products coming out of that FIAT factory to keep the doors open.
    I feel that the Avenger could have been abysmal, but instead it's just a bit average. I think it'll find quite a few buyers that in reality need a small hatchback but want the adventurous off-road image. Smart re-use of some Stellantis parts as well.

    I really hate it that so many of these driver 'assistance' features are default on at every start. It's predictably due to more legistlation from the EU.

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yes. That is the case. But the goal is to have less people die in road accidents, and apparently these electronic nannies prove effective.

      @@MarekDrivesENG My Jaguar XJ lane assist proved effective at trying to steer me into a lorry on a motorway at 70mph, so I turned it off after that. Other than that their system is not overly strict and fairly easy to live with - but I don't enjoy surprises like that.
      Recently though I had to rent a couple of cars and they had 'default on' systems (in fact the Kia kept switching it back on during use which I couldn't understand). I do mostly town miles and occasionally a long journey to a datacentre at work, on the same road that had confused my 2018 Jaguar, the Kia became borderline uncontrollable wanting to move into the other lane then correcting itself. I wouldn't mind if on starting you get a warning on the screen(s) saying driver assists are disabled, but having such invasive features continually reset themselves is unwelcome. I did some research via online car manuals and it turns out it is due to markets which adopted "General Safety Regulations 2 (GSR2)" standards.
      Test driving a 2024 Discovery Sport yesterday, when leaving everything turned on it was difficult to find times where it wasn't beeping about something or other. I'm looking to buy one at the moment and was going to treat myself to a new car (first time ever), but just getting one a single year older would avoid this annoyance.

    I didn't get the large vs small battery narrative. According to ABRP, Warsaw to Barcelona takes ~3h charging on Tesla Model S and ~9h on Jeep Avenger.

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  Год назад

      This is a perfect case scenario, when the whether's right, and you're driving vmax 110 km/h, there's no headwind, etc. Now increase the speed to 130 (top legal speed on restricted sections of the German motorway, and let's assume we're not going to take advantage of the unrestricted sections), and 140 for all of Poland. Also let's take into account right no in central Germany is between 0 and -2 degrees Celsius, and in Poland it's about -5. All of a sudden your 3h stops extend to 5-6h for Tesla.
      My point is that driving long distance ICE beats any EV. BCN-WAW in an ICE is probably 30 minutes of petrol station stops.
      We're not accounting for sleeping, driver changes, etc. Just your regular petrol station refill and piss stops. And no reasonable amount of kWh is going to solve this today.

    • @natoftw
      @natoftw Год назад +1

      @@MarekDrivesENG But why are we comparing ICE vs EV ? Shouldn't we compare small vs big battery ? I don't want to own two cars, and I want EV. There are clear advantages of owning an EV with bigger battery.

And why FWD? No AWD pocket rocket? That seems to be a missed opportunity. Volvo is offering that with the EX30.

    It occurs to me every time I see a video discussing ideal realms for compact EV's that in Holland we have a different requirement altogether. It is really expensive to own and drive a car. my former Diesel Hybrid sedan cost me 2000 euros just to own it (road tax). When you lease a car, a quarter of the list price is added to your income to pay taxes over, as it is seen as part of your income, and petrol on the highway is well over 2 euros per liter. So we can't afford two cars just for the fun of it, my family has two cars, two sub compacts instead of one big car. So the EV, which is much more expensive than an ICE car, must be a Jack of all Trades: both city driving, commuting to work, and holidays! So I'm constantly looking for the car which does all these things best at a reasonable price.
    I think the Stellantis range does it quite well, just behind Kia/Hyundai who are IMHO leading in that JoaT class: decent range, not too small a battery and enough charging speed to have limited breaks without breaking the bank in both owning costs and charging expenses. All it comes down to then, is taste, and availability.
    I like the Avenger, it does off-roading quite acceptably, although not comparable with a real 4x4 of course. A Dutch channel took it off road and they were pleasantly surprised.
    Economy is rather good, it seems. Of course range depends on size of battery and how much energy the motor can eek out into miles driven.

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  21 день назад +1

      Put a tax on ICE in a relatively small and flat country, and EVs start making a lot of sense ;)
      I just looked on Google Maps, and going across the longest diagonal of the Netherlands from Eemshaven to Sluis (tell me, if you know of a longer trip without crossing the border) is about 430 km. It's 5 hour drive, says Google, so the average speed will be ideal for an EV. You could probably do it on a single charge, but you're bound to stop at least once (and why not at a charging station?). Oldenzaal to Rotterdam and back the same day - no problem. You probably wouldn't even have to charge along the way.
      As long as you drive for holidays no further than within the Benelux countries, you can really have an EV as a car that does it all.
      In Poland an EV is a good short-to-medium distance commuter, but roadtripping one is always a game of chance. Sure, if you plan your route with ABRP, have all the charging network apps, and for good measure doublecheck on Plugshare, there's less chance of mishaps, but more often than not you have to stick to the charging route plan, and forget spontaneous exploring, because you may not make it to the next plug or you'll lose a lot of time, because the charging station is too slow (or slower than advertised). Also, EVs here are still sufficiently more expensive than ICE (the same model within Stellantis) to make them a wealthy person's choice.

    • @jwvandegronden
      @jwvandegronden 21 день назад

      @@MarekDrivesENG EV infrastructure is a good point. In Holland the infrastructure it is quite good, with many major fast charge networks. We are so densely populated, the chance to not run into a charging station is almost literally zero. But I go to Spain once or twice a year, so I need that car also for these kind of road trips. If the grid is to thinly spread, it becomes a game of chance indeed. I yet have to do a roadtrip in an EV, so no personal experience. But it would require a less time constrained planning to go and come back I assume.

    • @jwvandegronden
      @jwvandegronden 21 день назад

      @@MarekDrivesENG PS you did your homework. I thought it would be less, but thats quite accurate, 430km from groningen to zeeland.
      The Dutch are famous for their travel habits with families and their caravans, which is another challenge with EV's and normally we go to France, Spain or Italy when we are driving. So that is a real challenge when you have kids in the car ;-)
      For me it is a solitary event, to zoom out and have time to myself. Just two weeks away from everything and everybody. So the travel limitations for me are pure patience and stamina ;-)

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  21 день назад

      We drove a BMW iX from Poland to Northern Italy. Before we got to Austria I was ready to abort mission. Once we crossed the Czech-Austrian border problems stopped. There were plenty of chargers, navigation picked the fastest ones. Everything was fine.
      I imagine France is also OK, because they are big on EVs. Not sure about Spain or Portugal though. And bigger cars, like campers are a problem, because of gross vehicle mass (even if for EVs they raised it to 4.something tons).
      I've seen some concept trailers, which would have their own battery powered drivetrain. Great for maneuvering at the campsite, but also helping the EV towing it to get up inclines, etc. That being said, you still have to charge it, to probably unhitch it, start charging the car, and at the same time charge the trailer. Not ideal. At least for now.

    • @jwvandegronden
      @jwvandegronden 21 день назад

      @@MarekDrivesENG agree. It is all a bit sub par still at the moment. And I'm not sure if we, and I mean us countries around the world, are fully aware of what it means for grid purposes. Or are we gambling on solid state and other new battery technologies? It is been in the making for quite some time now, just as cold fusion and grafeen... Although some progress has been made, before it makes it to cars on a large affordable scale we are looking at 10 years at least, while transition goals are set for 2030.
      Thanks for the one on one mate! Enjoyed it to bits. Welcome to continue the conversation, but don't want to impose. I can write for hours if not days ;-)
