I saw this video when it came out and had not heard of Tom Waits at the time. I live in Germany, and I don´t think I´ve heard them play it here on radio. He has since become my absolute favorite musician. I worked my way through his material after seeing this and it really struck a chord with me. I already loved it when I heard the beautiful melodic songwriting on his first few albums, but when I got to Swordfish Trombones, I saw his genius. I´m glad to know this stuff know. Thanks so much, Justin!
Man oh man... when you see the breakdown of this song you realize how sophisticated it actually is. So well crafted. I've always loved Tom Waits, since way back when I discovered his albums in my dad's record stacks... and here I am 40 years later learning it on guitar. Thanks Justin... brilliant breakdown this! :)
You know Justin, when I saw Tom Waits as a solo act in 1974 touring to support this LP he was wearing the same kinda hat that you wear. (It was $4 and the headliner was Frank Zappa). Great song and you do it justice..
Have watched your videos here and there over the last 7 years, somehow never looked for Tom Waits - and was super surprised and impressed by your Tom Waits voice! Well done!
Justin, I've always looked around for a good lesson of this song, and I check periodically on your channel to see the lessons you upload. Lately, I admit, I haven't paid much attention, but I come back now and see a Waits song, a beautiful one played wonderfully (of course) at that and my faith has been renewed--not that I ever should have lost it, I understand you have to cater to pop fans and beginners alike, nothing wrong with that. Thanks again for the lesson. I couldn't be happier with it.
Hi Justin, just wanted to say that I got introduced to Tom Waits through this video. I had not heard of him before and have since listened through most of his catalogue, and am truly happy to know his music now. So, a huge thanks to you, both for your lessons and your great taste in music, and for showing me incredible artists like him. I truly appreciate it.
I have watched this video so many times. I now believe that I can play the song relatively well -- the singing not as well. Thanks so much for this lesson as well as all of the others. Thank you Justin!
This was done a looooooong time ago. I don't know tabs, and I may be boxing above my weight, but if the chords and picking were shown and explained in synch, each finger to each note, without speaking about other aspects (like the bass run) , this would have come off as a lot easier lesson. Justin seemed to be teaching this lesson to people who could pick up on it out of experience. I needed it to be much more methodical and slower.
You are a great tutor Justin, everything explained in detail, nothing missing. You are my go to guy when I want to learn a song, keep it up mate, you are THE best.
Wow! took me weeks but i,ve nailed it.believe me if a duffer like me can play this anyone can if you work at it. Justin thank you, I can keep believing that one day I'll be a player.
Yes! This is amazing lesson for this song. I am in absolute love with early Tom Waits and particularly his Early Years recordings. "I want you", and "Blue skies", are just a couple examples of his phenomenal song writing, and some of the best acoustic guitar I can think of, I'm sure you have plenty of things coming down the pike, but if you would open up some of these songs and lay them out in the future, i would pay for them. I'd buy your entire store if I had to.
i don't know if you just select the RIGHT songs or you make the greatest covers but any song I hear in this channel from you sounds so fucking great thanks justin!
Justin-- God bless you for posting this. I just heard this song the first time a few days ago (which is embarrassing because I like Tom Waits. Some of his stuff is hit or miss for me, but anyway) and I absolutely must learn it. I've been playing for almost 15 years. It would take me another 15 just to learn this one. Thank-you so much.
i can see in your eyes that you really like tom waits not beucase of what you said but i can see it because i know the look of a person who has been touched by his work, he is the best out there if you smoked pack and a half a day you could be next tom waits keep on dude soul and emotions are everything we got so keep on to them :)
I absolutely love this song! it's the perfect song for a perfect night around a fire in the woods! makes it even more amazing to now know how to play this song on guitar! And wow, wow, wow!!! - your voice is amazing!!!!!
Totally dig ur website. Song book arrived at weekend and I'm now getting this song down. Always wanted to play this tune. As one Tom Waits fan to another, thanks Justin!
Hey Justin, I just want you to say, that I really like your videos! You' ve a really good taste and you play only wounderful songs. You really make really beauty music! Maybe, you could make complete songs, too. I would be very happy about!!
Love this song, probably my favorite from Mr. Waits. I've been playing this by ear and roughly the chords you have here (very hard to pick out Tom's exact guitar part on the original recording, except in places). I also combined some of the bass part into my guitar arrangement. Your video gives me a bunch more voicings I can include in my arrangement; looking forward to adding in these flavors. Thanks for breaking it down!
Your are an awesome teacher. i am probably advanced beginner level, and this is quite a challenge for me, but you do a great job demonstrating and explaining. Thank you so very much. Just found your site. Will be following you and purchasing materials over the next few months.
Thanks Justin. i've been playing this ( my version ) for quite a while and already loved the song. I didn't play it in drop D and there were a few other differences in my version. Caught this video and liked it quite a bit better seeings though it sounds more like Waits version. Because I was playing it wrong for so long, it was really hard to learn it the right way but I've got it now. My advice to beginners= if you're going to learn a song, try and learn it the way it should be. Shortcuts are ok sometimes but only if it isn't too noticeable. Thanks again. You've got some great tutorials.
Great lesson - Been playing it for years but I'll be trying your take. I think you nailed it as much as can be done without the defining stand up bass runs.
Real nice cover, brother.Great lesson, too. Always wanted to learn this song since the night I saw him and got to hang out back stage with him. I think this album and particularly this song are pretty much perfection in what you want a song to do. Capture the memories and feeling of the subject. Thanks for this.
Well done mate. I've seen a few of your videos, and your delivery keeps getting better and better. Broken down very nicely, technique wise, for those at this level who are able to process and follow. I wish I could tell you what you might have done better, being a teacher myself, but I think you nailed it. Good job on personalising the vocals as well. He's a hard one to do justice to, this bard.
Its pretty challenging. Had to walk away from this lesson and then come back to it. But thanks a ton, cause I sound a lot better than I really am being able to play this to the degree I can now.
Hey Justin, great song, great video! Hands down one of my favorite songs ever. Does something for me to I just can’t explain. Keep up the good work brother!
Hey Justin, awesome work with the Tom Waits stuff. What a man... I would really love a lesson on ''dead and lovely'' !!! I can catch a little bit of the chords, but the strumming is so weird... Please consider it. And keep up the good work
this is still the best video Justin's ever made. fight me

He’s one of the greatest songwriters out there

Brilliant demonstration of one of the greatest songs ever written.
You know Justin, when I saw Tom Waits as a solo act in 1974 touring to support this LP he was wearing the same kinda hat that you wear. (It was $4 and the headliner was Frank Zappa). Great song and you do it justice..
Thanks Justin, your lessons are always cracking but this is something else. Thank you for giving us the power to be Tom Waits
Yes....I can recognise this voice.....This is Justin's voice on Guitar that hasn't changed at all...Thank you sooooo much, Justin.

Justin, you should do a full cover at the end of each of your lessons. That was really well done! :) thumbs up if you agree!

That is soooo beautiful a rendition Justin! Love it Thanks for the vid :-)
I've enjoyed playing the bass part along with your rendition. Using an acoustic bass guitar instead of an upright double bass.
I was gonna send you my version, but I think I will just learn yours!
Wow, you've been working overtime recently. Fantastic video.
Well done mate. I've seen a few of your videos, and your delivery keeps getting better and better. Broken down very nicely, technique wise, for those at this level who are able to process and follow.
