@@dannyeddyguitar It's ok. The tutorial is so good that there is no problem. The chorus is easy to understand by hearing the song, just I wasn't sure if there is another video or something (like part 2). But it's ok
Thanks for this detailed info on this my favorite song to play on guitar. More of these tips on the right details in beautiful songs. Remember when i finally learned this song i thought, now i can die happy!
Thank you for this video. "Closing time" is my favourite Tom Waits's album and it's a pity he decided to stop performing it not long after its release. I read an old interview about this fact - interview that I've never managed to find again - where he said that he doesn't really like that much anymore: he said something like "It was my fist album and those songs where soaked with a sense of ..." but I don't remember what he was talking about. Anyway, this song is a gem.
@@dannyeddyguitar All the thanks should be directed your way man. Is there any way we could get the tab you used for this song? Also, is there any variation of the chords at the end of each verse in Tom's guitar part? Cheers :)
How the hell do you know so much about Tom Waits? I loved the video about the guitarists who've worked with Tom, this is great too, please do as many of these as you like, good on you
This is such a wonderful, great, helpful video. I loved the details on what else was going on in the song, not just what Tom was playing. And the background on those other musicians. Thank you so much for giving me the details on how to play the song. This is one of those songs that seems pretty simple (the good old I, IV, V as you say) but there are a lot of subtleties in Tom's playing that are not readily apparent and that I doubt I would have been able to get on my own. So thank you for this. It's much appreciated. P.S. The first verse of this song showed up in the new movie "Flora and Son" on Apple TV which is where I thought to try and learn it.
best examples of Toms early finger picking were those albums "Tom Waits early years vol 1 and 2"..just bare bones demos done before his first album i believe..the demo version of Ol55 is far superior than what was on his first album..their amongst his best i reckon. I hope that i don't fall etc..is better on the demo
@@dannyeddyguitar Check out ruclips.net/video/EtLVXBqfqBY/видео.html where it's in D. Funny one. I guess it wouldn't be the first time an artist changed the key of a song, post-recording. Anyway, nothing a capo can't fix ;-) Your videos are excellent. Cheers.
@@declankenny5290 Ahh yes, that's an early demo I believe. Those 'Early Years' volumes contains recordings from before he made Closing Time. But you're spot on - that's in D!
Great teacher and historian.
Wonderful tutorial! Thank you for taking the time to illustrate everything so well!
I've been playing this song for nearly 30 years. thanks for this.
It's amazing the quality and diversity of musician that Tom has attracted.
Cheers Jerry!

Now, THAT'S a win!!
Perfect analisys! Please do more of Tom's songs that way!
Thanks Agnieszka. I'll do my best!
Wow! That was a real tutorial! You are an amazing teacher and as it seems also an amazing person. Thank you 🙏❤
Thanks so much for that beautiful comment! So glad you got something out of this.
@@dannyeddyguitar I got only one question. What is the chorus??
But it's ok, I figured it out 👍
Ahhhh! Sorry - only just saw this. I apologise - my tutorial focuses more on the technical aspects, somewhat neglecting the actual arrangement, d'oh!

Yes it brings joy, and now i learned the nice turn at the end of each verse thanks to your video and earlier struggle w blackbird.
Fantastic job Danny. One of my favourite Tom ballads. Thank you. I’m just a harmonica guy but your knowledge and expertise is fascinating.
Thanks heaps David! "Just a harmonica guy" says Dave. Coolest instrument ever. Wails like a wild tempest. Fits on your pocket!
Keep em coming, Danny! 👏
Will do, Dan!

Wow, I didn't know that. I suppose many artists move on quite a lot from their first release. But I think it's a beautiful album!
@@dannyeddyguitar I'm sorry I can't be more precise but I tried in every way to remember the missing part of the interview without result.
great lesson! thanks

Under consideration. ;)
Lovely stuff, though I’m just listening to the original and it seems to be in the key of D.
Thanks. I just checked and the album version is definitely in C - C, F, G7...
