Maxwell 2.0 is currently the oldest architecture Nvidia still supports, meaning that the GTX 900 series still runs on the latest drivers, and so is still mostly compatible with modern games. However, after 10 years, even the once high-end GTX 980 doesn’t look as appealing as it once did. Is it best left to playing games closer to its own age, or can it still give a premium experience in 2024?

Forbidden West doesn't use upsampling at all on PS4, it uses VRS and a dynamic res usually being native 1080p, with some dips to 900p. The PS4 Pro version uses Checkerboarding if that's what you're referring to, which isn't upsampling, it's interlacing.

Plus it gets impressive performance with 20+ t/s with llama 3 8b 6q models, which is beyond my expectation. The two downsides I could see are the choppy video performance even when playing yt videos with hd5450 since the p104 does not have video output but has to rely on the ancient hd5450 and no video encoder and decoder means you cannot compress videos with it.

Same here! At 1080p the 980ti still has plenty of legs left. With graphics I feel anything better than a mid-late 2010s title like AC Origns/Witcher 3 doesn't really add much to the overall experience; the level of fidelity the 980ti can provide (older games at max or new games on med) is plenty. Added to that I find I'm only drawn to new games based off the gameplay rather than those with the highest GPU requirements / amazing graphics. So long as I can run it, which I can with a 980ti, I'm content!😀

I had this till late last year from new in 2015 for £455. Beast of a card but I switched it out in my i7-4790K rig for a 3060ti (subsequently switched again to a 1660 super as I used the 3060TI in my sons new pc). It still ran BFV on >60 fps at 1080p on a mix of high/ultra. Sold it on for £50 after repasting it.

The thing with Hellblade II is that it *really* doesn't like it when you go over the VRAM limit, since makes system RAM calls really aggressively. It can easily go from running at 60 FPS to 10 FPS between scenes, depending on what textures are loaded in. So the 720p FSR UP comparison is actually pretty generous for the card, it would run at like 2 FPS at 1080p.

Ahh, the 900 series. I remember seeing it launch back in Sept 2014. This and the RTX 2000 series are the only ones I skipped. Well sorta. My EVGA GTX 590 died after Pascal launched, and EVGA replaced my GTX 590 with a GTX 970.
I started shopping for a new card back in early 2016 but I decided to wait for Pascal. The price/performance ratio of the GTX 980 put it in an awkward position against the 980ti and 970.

But there were some locations with 10-15fps fortunately there were the ones without enemies so i could finish the game . The game itself is masterpiece ;)

Not a 980, but Ti, served me well from brand new 8 years ago. She was custom watercooled, so she didnt see more than 65*C, but she did served me well, but with replacing 1080p monitor to 1440p it did show the age. Sold her two weeks ago and got 3080Ti which I also slapped EK waterblock and undervolted her, so in 7-8 years time will be waiting for "10 years later | GeForce RTX3080/Ti" video, so I can comment on my new 6080Ti or 7080Ti.

I'm looking forward to the anniversary build, first of all :)
I kept a Mac Pro 2010 running long past it's prime - and the secret sauce was the 980ti and either Windows or Linux.
That said, I play a different style of games than most - strategy, hardcore cRPGs, retro-games, oddball indie stuff...
As I am a tinkerer, I have a number of systems laying around - mostly cobbled eWaste or deals I couldn't pass up thrown into whatever jank case I have laying about...
The Titan Black, and - guilt by association - the original Titan - are beasts of GPUs for CPU heavy titles (which cRPGs are). However, the whole API and driver numbers are a sad, sad state of affairs for these games.
The Black actually can push some frames in Baldur's Gate III - but I don't have a map, at all, those layering effects just don't render. The 980 could do it, well in fact, but I sold that card... and I tend to game on my secondary system (I leave the other for my family, I like CRT gaming - so I have a dedicated system).
My point, I guess, is that obsolescence happens in weird ways. I don't AAA game, at least not much, and my main gaming rig is capped at 75hz (the real computer can hit 165hz, but I hate that screen for gaming, don't know why).
I have found that the RX5500 is sort of a sweet spot for me - with my disappointing sleeper build (Pentium G7400, 64GB DDR5 @ 4200, RX 5500 8GB). But I digress, but I have been nothing but impressed, at least in my sort of gaming, by the performance here (other than BG3, though... honestly...).
Thanks for championing this legend of a card, even if the TI has somehow aged much better (I was impressed, and it wasn't that long ago).

I got a GTX 980 for ~£40 last year and it's OK for older, less demanding games. I'd say if the price is right and you don't expect too much from it, go for it :)
Gotta wonder when driver support will be cut though, it's probably just around the corner since Kepler has been out of support for a while now.

I had several strange glitches with ghost of tashima when benchmarking with a RX 480 using the newest drivers, not only did I have the disappearing body parts but parts of the game would be completely black and white with no textures drawn on the screen at all. I benchmarked on the 580 using the newest drivers and the game ran flawlessly at around 40 FPS. Has anyone else seen similar issues with the 400 series and GoT?

I would be interested to see how the GTX 980's ival, the R9 Fury, handles this benchmark suite because although its power use was atrocious, it had the same TDP as the R9 390 despite being a faster card. It was even faster than the GTX 980. It would be more of an apples to apples comparison with the GTX 980 because both cards have only 4GB of VRAM. Of course, the R9 Fury's 4GB of HBM is, to date, still some of the fastest VRAM ever put into a video card with that ridiculous 4096-bit VRAM bus. It would be pretty interesting to see which of those two top-echelon cards aged the best.
Back then, the top-4 cards were pretty close to one another and this was their order:
    1.) GTX 980 Ti
    2.) R9 Fury-X
    3.) R9 Fury/Nano
    4.) GTX 980
I'm not talking about the Nano or Fury-X which you've already tested years ago, I'm talking about the full-size, air-cooled R9 Fury.
I'm curious because I bought an R9 Fury back in 2017 during the first mining craze when the RX 580 (which was slower) cost about $800CAD. I paid less than half of that for the R9 Fury because its power draw made it useless for mining. I could try it myself because I still own it but you have a much better flair for this than I do.
