Seeing the Titan X play the big games of its era, after they have been fully patched, drivers have matured, and CPUs can feed the beast, it is nice to see that it could play those games well even up to 4K resolution and as it should be. It is impressive how well it did in more modern titles up to a point, but it absolutely is showing its age. I know my RTX 2080 Super with its 8GB of RAM is going to struggle with certain current titles, however, I am not playing those and have no plans to currently. I have a back log of old titles I am trying to get through that play flawlessly at even 4K resolution maxed out. The more modern games I play such as Cyberpunk 2077, I have to make some small sacrifices at 2560x1440 to keep 60FPS, but have little trouble maintaining 70FPS on mostly high settings at 1920x1080 resolution. A friend of mine was offered a Titan to buy, and he considered it till I offered him my GTX 1070 and AMD Ryzen 5 1600X both for $200.00. Cyberpunk 2077 runs great at 1920x1080 with a mix of low and medium settings, FSR 2.1 set to Quality, maintains a pretty solid 60 FPS. And with his Christmas upgrade to an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, the GTX 1070 doesn't even hitch at all now, its bonkers.

I bought two Titan X Maxwell cards (for Sli) back in early 2015.
I still remember how annoyed i was when they released the 980 ti right after,
which had basically the same performance (and for 300 dollars less).
But as the years went by, the 12GB VRAM started to become a benefit in games.
I ended up using them as my main GPU's for over 8 years until late 2023,
which is the longest i have ever used any GPU.
Only just recently retired them for an RTX 4080 16GB because of newer games.
What started out as a bit of a buyers regret (since the 980 ti was released right after)
ended up becoming one of the best purchases i have ever made.

What's really striking to me is how higher boost clocks really helped 980 Ti owners out versus this 1089 MHz on the Titan X. Such a low clock speed coupled with a longer pipeline really made the difference. The 1080 has 1 whole mb less than the Titan X so to see such a difference is just amazing. It's the lesson AMD learnt after their Vega disaster, RDNA 1 had less alus but just a better pipeline for gaming, however Vega had the crown on crypto thanks to the massive cache ect. Just interesting to see this play out. Thanks for the video it was insightful and hope all is well cheers

What's really strange is a year ago, Iceberg Tech reviewed the 980ti. The 980ti is literally a cutdown varient of the Titan X Maxwell, the 980ti even has a lower boost clock and the same TDP!
Yet the 980ti consistently outperformed Titan X. I guess driver support for the titan is dropped earlier.

    • @IcebergTech
      @IcebergTech  9 месяцев назад +10

Looking back at the numbers, the 980Ti won by ~10% in Forza Horizon 5 and ~20% in Cyberpunk. The 980Ti was boosting higher, but not by much - about 70MHz - so it shouldn't really have scored higher, but I think I might have an answer. Cyberpunk has had some big updates, including the Phantom Liberty DLC since my 980Ti review, which probably accounts for the difference. Meanwhile, I don't believe I used TAA in FH5 back then, which might account for the drop in performance compared to the 980Ti.
I'm watching an auction on a 980Ti right now, so if I win I'll retest it to see how it's held up.

One interesting thing about the Titan X Maxwell card was that it was actually allowed to have custom models from AIB/board partners and after this generation it was ceased. EVGA had the Titan X SC (Superclocked) with a 13% out of the box OC, it looked the exact same as the NVIDIA Titan X Maxwell card, just pre-binned. They also had a Hydro Copper variant which had a copper waterblock already attached with a 15% OC. It was interesting to see that NVIDIA allowed their partners to mess around with the Titan product line of cards and create custom models. The Titan lineup has always been interesting because although it was always super expensive, it did always have huge VRAM for its time period.

With that in mind I would imagine that even though that even though over time the performance fell off, the people who bought this card probably felt that they got their moneys worth of gaming with it. Some things don't last forever and when it comes to tech, that statement is more than true, it's inevitable. @@RiasatSalminSami I mean they literally are. £70 on console and £50-60 on PC but with PC you could get them in other ways off a man with an eye patch or buy the keys half price on G2A or CD keys.; They cost up front is less but with steam sales and just cheaper games it will even out if you use it for a few years. Best thing to do is get a steam deck right now. Console quality experience with all the extra cool shit of PC. Cost less than a PS5 £309 for LCD and £479 for the OLED. and it's portable, and it's a PC. so powerful for the price, doesn't make any sense but I love it.

If you are still running a Titan XM; I presume that your budget has significantly decreased over the years. So these are the GPUs I would go for. This will contain a mixture of used and new.
    New:
    7600 XT ($320)
    4060 Ti 16GB ($410)
    7800 XT ($480)
    7900 GRE ($550)
    Used:
    2080 Ti ($330)
3080 12GB ($350) (Don’t go 10GB unless you like shooting yourself in the foot)
    3080 Ti ($400)
    3090 ($550-$650)
    6800 XT ($350)
    6900 XT ($490)

I know it will sound dumb, but after watching a bunch of videos of older cards since the 900 series, it's shameful how the current GPU scenario is. $200 GPUs now can barely run a 1080P game at ultra/high settings without some kind of help from those upscaling tools. Back in 2014, I really believed that by now we would at least have less expensive cards able to handle 1440p easily

Getting a mid range-ish GPU and upgrading every 2 to 4 years is WAY more worth it than getting a very high end gpu and upgrade in 8 to 10 years. It takes about 4 years to a lower mid range to catch up with a very high end gpu, but that comes with many benefits: support to newer techs, lower power comsumption, overall better driver compatibility, and lower price.

600 euros got me the 980ti back then that has lasted to this day, still playing most everything decently at 1080p 50+ fps.
For that price the highest I can get now would be the cheapest 4070 model (non super), an MSI Ventus 2X OC... I don't know about you but I don't expect that 4070 to last even 4 years at this rate meanwhile the 980ti is getting close to 10. Needless to say spending any less that that nowadays on a graphics card is going to provide a horrible return on investment.
You end up paying more in the long run and having to worry about selling and recouping money to spend on the next card every few years, dealing with early driver issues, never quite having the performance to keep you happy for long... At some point the hassle doesn't become worth the money saved now.

big downfall of the maxwell arch was its poor a sync compute performance and low fp32 bandwidth because of it in turn. thats why you saw a quick turn around because nvidia knew gcn would keep chugging as long as it got fed faster and faster memory. gcn 2+ all have amazing a sync performance.... thats why you saw some games on maxwell cards havea huge difference and even more so now with it being implemented more regularly (its also why maxwell sucks in vulkan)
