  • Look at the work of Gustav Klimt. Focus on how he used pattern and colour in experimental ways - he was a master of variety.
Choose your own colour scheme. Your colours could be bold and complementary like Klimt, or analogous, soft or even monochrome for a more relaxed aesthetic quality.
Paint a random abstract background with big splotches of colour.
Once this layer is dry, add in another layer of finer patterns. Use a mixture of geometric and organic shape and line.
Once this is dry, add further details with markers if needed.
Then, cut and paste your patterns to make them even more bizarre.
Remember to balance your work - think about how you space out 'busy' and 'relaxed' pieces as well as how you will balance the placement of your various colour choices.
