    The episode aired in 1996 - which means the "new" groups they featured - Smashing Pumpkins, Cypress Hill, Sonic Youth - are now in the category of Grand Funk Railroad. "It'll happen to you!" - as Abe Simpson said.

      Yeah, I started listening to GFR back in college literally 100% thanks to Homer enlightening me. Although, I'm sure others must have brought this up before... But "Mississippi Queen" (the second song) was by Mountain, the Grand Funk.

    For all you youngsters: Grand Funk Railroad is the ultimate generational shout out band because they didn't get a lot of press, didn't sell millions of albums but they were HUGELY popular. Led Zeppelin big but without the record sales. They were adored and loved. Bands could be big in those days and not get airplay or record sales. Grateful Dead? Word of mouth before internet.

      Its fitting considering the episode aired during the height of the grunge/post grunge era(like 2 years after kurt kobain died and 6 years before layne staley as well) since most bands of the time sang about more depressing stuff rather then rock groups of past(plus nu metal was starting to take hold around the time)

    The first time I ever saw this I was in my 20s and I was just sitting there yelling at the TV, "WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE KIDS?!?! HOMER HAS AWESOME TASTE IN MUSIC!!!" I was into Smashing Pumpkins and the other alternative rock of the era as well but I loved classic rock and couldn't imagine how you could like one and hate the other.

    As a father this is the most accurate thing i have seen in all my life. My two girls hate all of my music. They go on about Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi. Lucky my 8 year old boy is obsessed with50s rock and roll. Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochran are he’s favourites. Thing that might of saved my life 😂

      I'm 25. Most modern music doesn't interest me at all. I got influenced by my mum, and dad. I love mostly stuff from the 1960's-1990's. The 80's is probably my favourite era for music. Don't get me wrong, some of the early to mid 00's was decent but after that the good music dried up for me.

    I remember being like 10-12 when I first saw this on tv and I didn't have a clue on what Grand Funk Railroad was, obviously finding music wasn't as easy back then as it is now so many years after I accidentally found Shinin' on while browsing through RUclips and fell in love with it. Out of all the 70's bands I can think of, Grand Funk is definitely number one on my list at this moment.

      No. There was actually a huge Classic Rock resurgence in the 90s; well, at least for high-school aged kids. Led Zeppelins popularity especially soared, while Jimmy Buffett went from largely forgotten one-hit-wonder to megastar. Eric Clapton became everyone's favorite Blues guitarest after his MTV Unplugged appearance, Tom Petty had a massive hit album with Wildflowers (and #1 hit with "You Dont Know How It Feels") and on and on
      The commentary is correct for how kids generally feel about their parents music, but it wasn't exactly an accurate example of 90s kids view towards 60s-70s music

    I have seen this episode numerous times and just got the connection of Grand Funk RAILROAD "paving the way" for Jefferson AIRPLANE. I always got the part about Jefferson Airplane clearing the way for Jefferson Starship, but seems to have missed the railroad/airplane connection.

    this reminds me of how i felt about my dads music when i was a kid (my dad is into the Zombies, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Santana, The Doors, etc.)

    I don’t know how it is now, but I was a teenager when this aired and a lot of people my age were really into the late 60’s and 70’s hard rock bands. Grand Funk, Zeppelin, the Doors, etc. were all pretty popular among my age group.
