Because it's a safety issue. The wiring looks old and decayed, it should definitely be replaced. Imagine you accidentally touch the live wire, you could die, only because you wanted the lamp to be original
Paula Shelton have you never experienced liking something a friend doesnt like? As for 'fake tear', have you never had an eyelash drop or an irritating speck of dust arrive at the most inconvenient time? You will.
I find it astonishing that people would not take a few moments to inspect something old and at least make an attempt to find out if it’s valuable before tossing it out. Have people never heard about Antiques Roadshow? How many decades has that been on PBS all around the country?
Lots of people don't look closely because they say to themselves "I already have too much stuff." And besides, 95% of stuff in takeaway piles is worthless junk.
Oh, it makes me cry to hear you say that this beautiful piece is UGLY. it is well crafted and beautiful to me. I was a docent at the Morse Museum in Winter Park, Florida, because I had researched Tiffany and all Arts and Crafts, etc. art and architecture for decades. I love it. I love it. I would give it a good forever home!
My great grandmother had a matching pair of Tiffany lamps. One day she decided they were old and ugly so she took the shades off, smashed them in the trash, and put on new shades she thought were prettier. My grandma got so worked up every time she told the story.
@@jblyon2 Oh, dear. When I hear stories like this, I am reminded that the people of that era had been through the Great War and the Spanish Flu and had been hurt by nature. They had great hope that the future would hold better promise in the hope of science and "progress." If you want to hear a sad story, read up on the downfall of the Louis Comfort Tiffany business and property, especially his own ravishing home, Laurelton Hall, on Long Island. With his aesthetic crushed by the roaring twenties and art deco and modernism and his fortunes in tatters, his home fell into wrack and ruin. My former boss went to the home and found windows leaning against shed walls, the glass bulging out, everything in a state of decay. He bought everything he could salvage and built the finest, most comprehensive collection of his company's works in the world. Read up on the Morse Gallery in Winter Park, Florida. It is the closest thing to perfection I found when I lived in Orlando.
It’s usually either old people cleaning out their stuff so their kids don’t have to deal with it after they die, or it’s young people cleaning out their old grandparents stuff after they die. Neither have any idea of the value of old things. The old people may have inherited it from their parents and therefore have no idea how much it cost their parents to buy in 1920, and the young people have similarly inherited it and have no idea how valuable it is.

Probably would find something like that on bulky item pickup at the Mission Hills mansions of Prairie Village. Billionares live there and theres all kinds of treasures there. In fact, there was a demo on one of the mansions, and up in the attic were these very moldy asian screens. There was copper piping right on top of them unfortunately, but thats the caliber of what you can find off the curb
I bring my lamp in from Home Hardware: The base is steel and the lamp is opaque glass. Never transport the lamp like you did. Remove the shade because the value is in the shade. On the bottom of the base, you can see a piece of Elvis Presley velvet. That is there to protect it from slipping. If you remove the velvet, you'd probably see NO signature because these lamps were manufactured by the millions. Do you want to know the value of your lamp? Sure. Well, at auction, it would probably go for $6.00 to $10.00, on a good day. What? Really? My goodness. I never could have imagined. I love it even more now. LOL
That's Nicholas D. Lowry, one of the appraisers on the show. He's an expert on vintage posters. He's the President of Swann Auction Galleries, and he always wears very loud plaid suits. It's a trademark. Watch the show and you will see him from time to time.
A whole lot of precious and valuable items have been carelessly discarded when old folks pass on and kids / relatives are left to clean up and clean out living spaces.
I used to work at a thrift store. People donated valuable things ALL THE TIME. And the worst culprits? Mostly male children who had recently lost their last parent. They would bring everything and just drop it off. I have found countless valuable glass and ceramic "knick knacks" that have been worth a good chunk of money.
Yeah, it said Tiffany on the bottom and on the shade but I didn't realize it was valuable, so I put it out at the street. Know anybody that wants an old Duesenberg before I have it crushed tomorrow?
Watch this whole program. Most of these people in Phoenix just "ain't right" as my grandmother would have said. They all seem to lack some basic sense of self awareness.
I do not buy the lady's story. No way will anyone put a lamp outside at the street 'for free' if you clearly can read 'Tiffanys' at the bottom of the thing. No-one will do that. So, where does she have that item from....?
The person putting it out I'm sure knew it was a Tiffany and they just wanted to pass it on to somebody bc they didn't want it anymore. And to the commentor who said "Who would put a Tiffany in the trash?"..Well she never said it was in the trash. It was in front of her neighbors house to take for free. Big difference.

Incidents like this are tests. If you rejoice and keep it, you fail. If you return the lamp to the people who unknowingly discarded it and tell them of it's value, you pass and become a better person. If you cannot find the owner, sell it and do good with the most of the money. Keep the remainder in clear conscience.
Ummmmmm So she couldn't turn the lamp over and read? That's akin to seeing a Rolls Royce emblem or a Rolex Oyster watch and not knowing what they represent. Her story strains credibility, hence my incredulity.
Everyone is criticizing this lady, but I say give her a break. To an uneducated eye, seeing and old lamp with a knarly cord discarded by the side of the street would maybe look like trash. Plus you walk by it several times and nobody grabs it, validating your idea it is trash. Well trash is ugly most of the time so voila...It becomes a lot more attractive in one's mind once you know it's LCT and very valuable. Personally, I see plenty of art I can't see the monetary value in, especially modern art, so I can forgive this lady for not realizing what she had.
At first she calls the handmade fine-art lamp ugly, then starts literally crying when she hears the value. Tells us a lot about the values of our society
Very informative appraisal; good to know that modern rewiring won't devalue it and how well protected the shade must be when moving it.
But how lucky was the woman to have a neighbor who saw the old wiring and thought to say "slow down and find out more about this lamp???"
Arlie Sulka is one of the best appraisers in ARS. 🙂
Just give it an appropriately designed wire, not a plastic looking thing.
