It's no longer a viable option, the pricing for a full setup is not cheap and with a bit more you can get a cheap mini pc that would blow the pi out of the water.

You're right, the Pi is best for specific projects. Like I wanted a Neo Geo AES Mini but SNK never made one. So I made one with a Pi3 and a Neo Geo X dock. Does it make sense? No not really but it looks cool! 🤣There's a ton of really cool things you can do with a Pi and that's where it primarily shines.

I got a Pi4 during the craze. I was excited about being able to run different systems. What I noticed with downloading custom builds is I would continually get start4.elf not compatible error messages. It became work just to get the image to boot up. Finally gave up on it. I hope they fix that in the next version. Pi3 was an absolute dream. Everything worked. Most you had to worry about was shrinking an image to fit a card

The problem is that by about 200 dollars you can get a mini PC with 16 GB of ram and better specs that a PI 4; more so if you get it without the Windows tax. So honesty unless prices go down to about less that 150 dollars, kit included and free shipping is just not worth it.

You are going to be waiting another probably two years or more if you want solid PS3 emulation bud. Probably another 5 years for SBC emulation. PS3 emulation requires a top of the line PC rig. Talking a 4090 based system. As first party titles are still running pretty bad for the most part. (MGS4, God of war 3/Ascension, Killzone 2, etc) I have a 5950x and a 3080 and I'm still struggling with PS3 emulation.

I recently started setting up emulation machines for my friends with Le Potato. It does everything through PS1, and my friends have been having a blast with it.
I love that everyone's argument about the high price of the raspberry pi was that you got such better software and support with the RPi that it was still worth it.
Well, you idiots kept your stuff overpriced for so long that people realized how much more powerful other single board computers were, and now they are getting software and support. The one thing you guys had to offer, and you blew it.
My Le Potato is equivalent to a RPi 3, and I paid $35 or $45? I can build the WHOLE device with a case, memory and power cord for $80.
These are tinker toys that are ALSO useful in enterprise applications. You posh folks over at RPi forgot that.

I think it is not worth it, I bought a raspberry pi3, installed the emulators and games, I was so happy to be able to play all retro games, I did all the installation myself, following some tutorials in RUclips, I even was able to mount a 64 gb usb so I games fitted inside, also was able to connect a Wii note controller using an adapter, so I use a pro control for the Wii.
I don’t use it so often, maybe once a month I play a little bit, most of the games runs perfect. But after 3 years something’s started to happen, while playing a lighting volt icon started to appear in the corner. I researched in internet to see what this means, and if means that the raspberry is not getting enough power, but I am playing snes how can it not get enough power? Also I have the official raspberry power cable. I tried to buy a cellphone cable with more power, and even after using this cable, the lighting icon still appears. Also the snes games sometimes have slowdown. So I started thinking because this small computer is not made for video games, so it’s components very soon gets very old. So in the end I think this same thing will happen with the new raspberry, so I think is not worth it.

For me the answer would have to be no. Not at the Pi 4 starter kit prices. Playstation emulation is very subpar on the Pi 4. Using just about any filter to smooth out the graphics a bit cause the Pi 4 to choke out to a non playable state. On the Dreamcast side its pretty much the same thing. PSP is about the only system you can play and get decent game play out of it all on the higher end consoles. Most all of the old systems work well. Well with the exception of Sega Saturn. It chugs and looks pretty bad over all. Dont even try to apply any filters. The Pi 4 just is not worth it for emulation outside of things SNES and below. With the exception of PSP. You can make a pretty good PSP emulation system from it. When I look at the current pricing for these starter kits it would be better to just get the Pi 5. Which has many of the same issues unfortunately. Why bother with a Pi for emulation when a nice mini pc around same price range will do far more?

  • @PabstOban

Yeah… I don’t get the markup. The Pi4 itself… I get it, there really isn’t much profit to be made on that, but all the other things there is a 50%+ profit margin. The kit them just tacks more money on that.
Makes me think of QVC. They would have something you wanted but couldn’t find anywhere… say a Nintendo Wii near launch. They would charge you retail but then force you to buy high markup items to make you FEEL like you weren’t being worked over.
Hey… if they can sell it all for that much, good for them… but their competition is China, who will sell you a fully put together system for less than half that… and while their images are loaded with dupes and things that don’t work, it’s still half the price and it’s plenty good enough.
