    I like to watch what and see what other people stock up on. It's always good to have extra food available. Last year the fridge broke down and I had just gone shopping, at least $140 worth of food went bad, meat, vegetables, ice cream, frozen foods, everything! Fortunately I had a lot of stuff in my pantry and I went to a drop-in center where they make breakfast and lunch. I was lucky I stocked up on cans and boxes.

    You know I'm the opposite of you as far as pantry clean out. I'm working on getting a decent food storage going. I want to eventually have enough dry, can and freezer stuff to last 6 months. That way if something were to happen we wouldn't starve. Of course I live in a rural area where getting a good job (or even full time job) can be difficult. You can wind up going months between jobs or with only a PT one.

      Exactly, I'm confused why you would buy meat in bulk from zay con when it could spoil in power outage but you want your pantry empty. Cans will last for at least a couple years. I stock my pantry with everyday things we need then make meals out of it. Then when it's time to shop for fresh fruit and veg I look and see what pantry items I ate and replace them. Very convient when busy or weather won't let me got to store.

      Steven Nichols sorry but maybe I wasn’t clear... I’m totally fine with buying certain items in bulk (like meat, stuff from Costco) and storing them if I can get a good deal and save money. Worst case scenario if we lose power we have a large generator that can easily run the freezer, fridge, window unit, lamps etc. my only point with “purging the pantry” is that I want to be super intentional when I grocery shop to begin with. I want to get into a good habit of being efficient and not buying stuff at full price that we won’t eat, goes bad or just sits in our pantry for months and months. I used to be AWFUL with food waste, there is definitely an art behind food shopping/storage/consuming so I’m just trying something that hopefully will work for our family ☺️ hope that clears it up!!

      I like stocking pantry and canning so that I'm prepared I've had times when the pantry was a life saver, emergencies happen good to be ready, I even can meat so if a power outage its still good, I do keep freezer full when I can no deep freeze but have two fridges with freezer space, but pantry is my goal I like to keep it stocked I live in middle of nowhere and have numerous health issues so its handy, I do rotate and date stuff and try to use the older stuff first, I'd love to be able to clear it out and start fresh but lol I gotta keep it full as can we both got flu for ten days me and daughter lived on easy canned soups and ramen to sick to cook so now gotta work on restocking that lol well guess we all have to do what works for us, I need to can meat loaf on a video, its great for a sand which or quick meal, yes lol canned meat ,pretty ham she has there yummy

    Probably too late for that particular sacrificial lemon, but it can still be used to steam clean the inside of the microwave and/or regular oven, as well as freshen the kitchen sink drain/garbage disposer.
    Also, elfa shelving at Container Store is on sale now/Feb and is the most versatile track/standards/shelving/accessories systems ever because they can be changed any time to configure closet and room changes as needed.

    Great job using all your food, my pet peeve is the people that shop at Costco and they are constantly buying and not using what they have first so then they start throwing out old food.

    Something you could do when the milk goes out of date is to use it for cooking mash potatoes or mac and cheese so you don't have to throw it away... I do that before buying new milk haha. Also the milk doesn't taste funny or anything so it could be an alternative

    Just curious why you want to empty all your food storage every month ? We have almost a years worth of food here and there have been 2 separate occasions that without it we would have been going to bed hungry. Life can come at you from all angles . Loss of job ( My husbands company sold and all employees were let go ) He also broke his shoulder one year and was out of work for almost 8 months. What happens if at the end of the month there is a natural disaster and there are no trucks running ? ( This seems to be happening more frequently ) An extended pantry is peace of mind here. We are not hording food , but rotating through it. Just something to think about.

    • @TF-MJ
      @TF-MJ  6 лет назад +5

      Totally hear you! Those are all very valid points. I just prefer to operate on more of a monthly basis. Most of the time we have 2-4 weeks worth of food on hand since I bulk shop once a month. But every now and then I like to clear the pantry and use up the food we have on hand before spending money on more food. For me, food waste has always been something I needed to work on so this system (so far) has been working best for us. Thanks for watching!! XOXO

    • @itstheblessing
      @itstheblessing 6 лет назад

      Let me urge you to plan for more than one month . In this day and age you never know what will happen . It could be weather disaster , job loss , illness , or economic crash etc. If something happened with our country if the grid say went down etc. the stores would be emptied in hours and no trucks would be coming in . We lived in the CO. mountains far from stores . We are retired . My husband was in the hospital and when home I couldn't leave him . We lived out of our pantry for eight months . It was a life saver . Many have children to think of too . If nothing happens then that is great and you have saved money since food just keeps going up in price . You won't loose a thing . If you don't can you might want to learn to avoid GMO foods and foods taste so much better when they don't come from metal can's . You can also store left overs in canning jar's that can last two or more weeks in the fridge . Garden or shop farmers markets , plant nurseries many times have fruit and veg. brought in from local farms to sell , helps you avoid GMO .
      I really enjoyed your video . Thank you for putting out there for us . Blessing's , Linda

    • @itstheblessing
      @itstheblessing 6 лет назад +2

      Pat Sanzone , You hit the nail on the head and do what I do . People need to wake up and be prepared no matter what may happen due to weather disasters, illness , grid going down , etc. . Using food saver's and oxygen absorbers , dehydrating foods and canning is a plus . I do my best to avoid GMO foods . Pat I loved your comment . Blessings, Linda

    Yeah for the Kerrygold butter it’s yummy :) . Being Irish I don’t use anything else and thankfully they sell it where I live in the UK. I love your idea on eating everything or rather using up everything that’s a fantastic tip ! I’m so doing this x Oh and my top tip is cut the burger buns before you freeze them and pop them in the toaster . Instantly ready x

      Lol. I am lazy. I wash and freeze them whole. A friend has a tree and I got at least 15 bags worth. I gave about 7 or 8 small bags away. Took the zest off of 12 for limoncello. Made lemonade. Saved the rinds to clean meat and dishes if I need to. So many uses in one fruit.

    I would be absolutely scared if my pantry fridge and freezer got that bare. We live pretty far from civilization, plus I garden and can. If bad weather or the highly unlikely event we would be stuck here I bet my family could live for a year on the items I put up. Probably not that long, but close. Ps....I had twins too. Children 3 and 4.

    This came up as a recommended video but I see it's almost a year old, what made you change how you shop since you use to shop monthly and now you shop weekly? Do you stock up on less food now since you go more often?

    • @TF-MJ
      @TF-MJ  5 лет назад

      When I was shopping monthly I feel like I was not being very good with food efficiency. I would have a lot of things that would go bad before we had a chance to use them up and it was just really hard to keep track of meals and practicing zero food waste. Shopping weekly has been much better for us. I can come up with 7 meals very quickly, shop sales (and our pantry) and just keep the food budget/meal plan operating smoothly :-)
