does this information apply to high school basketball because a high school court is a lot smaller and I feel like when I try these reads it is too condensed. I feel like in high school lots of tags can play both the corner and the role because it is such a small court. Or the person guarding the ball just goes under the screen
Awesome question, and good observation. This is my first year coaching HS basketball, so I will have a much better answer after this season - but even from watching tape of our team from last year, all of these same reads are open a lot. Yes, the court is smaller, but so are the players. They don’t move at the same pace as D1 college players, so I think in a lot of ways it’s scalable. One thing that makes a HUGE difference is when players in HS can stretch the floor and shoot it from the college 3pt line distance. That puts more stress on tags and help defenders because even though the line is closer, it’s more about where you have to close out to. Great question!
Excellent video, thanks. I'm in the process of moving from a wing to a PG and usually have a hard time reading the coverage AND tags fast enough. This helps a lot. Potentially stupid question - how does tagging and manipulating tags change when defense switches in ballscreens? My admittedly little experience is that there is no "2 people guarding 1" situation, so no tagging is needed, and I'm frequently stuck trying to move the D. Do you abandon the whole plan and just play the mismatch created? Thanks again.
So there’s never a tag defender strong side corner because it would be an easy kick out for a three right? So strong side corner defender has to stay with his guy and hugs the defender for no kick out threes right?
Some teams will tag out of the strong side corner, but it’s very risky because the pass is easy to make & there’s nobody else to help/recover. So, it happens, but it’s rare. The one time I’ve seen it done well is when the offensive player in the strong side corner is a non-shooter. Then you can help off as much as you want because you’re fine with them shooting. Great question!
What a great video! Now just a detail but how to express/count the tags when the ball handler reject the screen? Tags are the defenders on the on the "weak side" or you keep the naming/counting them on the initial screen position?
Thank you so much! Glad it was helpful. There’s a LOT of opinions on this, and the level of competition makes a big difference on the answer. Personally, I think icing or switching is the best way to guard ballscreens.
I'd like a slower and more detailed approach to breaking these concepts down. My amateur enthusiast pickup game brain has a hard time digesting all that's happening in real time. More examples, further breakdowns, 50% speed could improve my chances imo.
Can you make more videos like this. With the same information but just longer ones or more videos. It is really helpful. Thanks
I will work on that! Anything in particular that you want to see as far as topics/content? Thanks for your support!
@@TheFilmRoom1 Could you give more insight on what a guard can do to score from ball screens.

@@TheFilmRoom1I agree, great content, can you make longer video in which you just analyze footage while explaining it. Keep up the great work!!💯
Could you maybe also suggest some drills on how to train these PnR concepts
Great video coach, I love your teaching style
Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words.
Best Basketball YT Chanel!! 💌
Truly appreciate that 😊🤝
Can we get a video of possible defensive rotations to guard different PNR actions?
Great question. I’ll see if I can put something together for that. Thanks for reaching out.
Hey Man can you do another video on this topic of Tag defenders I really liked this and I'm trying to develop a deeper understanding of it

Good stuff. Where do u coach?
Thank you! I’ve been all over at the college level for 10 years, but this is my first year at the HS level. I’m at Wichita West in Kansas.

Nope. NAIA, JUCO, and NCAA D2

Haha you’re too kind. 🤝
What video editing do you use?
It’s a program called Klipdraw
Strong side != near side. Strong side is the side with >2.5 players in it. Near side is side with the ball in it.
