Olive oil should have always been zero rated for VAT In U.K.there is no vat on any cooking oils… I’m surprised the Spanish have tolerated this for so long
@alanc3595 Here in the Canary Islands which of course is Spain, Olive oil is zero rated for VAT. In the Canaries there is no VAT on anything. I'm surprised the British have tolerated this for so long.
@@GranCanariaUncovered You seem to think it’s a competition …. I did not refer to the Canaries -nor did the original vlog by Stu which is what I was referring to .. @@Alanc13579 Oh dear my tongue in cheek comment appears to have upset you, that wasn't the intention. Yes we have 7% IGIC here but importantly that only applies to goods and services provided and sold in the Canary Islands. When I order stuff from the EU, China or the UK for example they can't charge me either IVA (VAT) or IGIC. Same applies the other way, I have a company registered here and if I sell goods or services outside the islands I can't charge VAT or IGIC either. One interesting factor is people here still complain about the cost of Olive Oil (and often in the shops it has security tags to prevent theft) so whether or not there is VAT charged on it apparently doesn't make a lot of difference. 😉
That last comment about the weather in Torrevieja reminds me of a quote my university statistics professor used to use: "The plural of anecdote isn't data."
I’ve been living near Torrevieja for 22 years, people with no experience no qualifications get off the plane at Alicante, walk down the steps of the plane and bing….they become expert builders electricians and worse of all…estate agents …oh and experts on weather and politics. You are never more than 6ft away from a cockroach or a Tory voter. Great show as usual. Cheers
Ive been in Spain for 20 years and i sold my apartment in valencia and bought a small holding with a cottage and 3k metres of land and 26 olive trees. The previous owner had a contract with the coop to maintain the trees and harvest the crop in return for some olive oil. But...this has not been extended to me. So, the coop are missing out on my well maintained olive trees, the olives and their oil and i have no idea why.
The profit that the cooperative makes from the oil from 26 olive trees is about 300 euros. Perhaps it's not worth for them. In any case, every one can havest their own olives and bring them to a mill, which gives you back oil in a proper container in exchange for money or part of the oil. Who's going to take care of the trees now? Maybe 26 rose bushes give more work, but you have to know how to do it
@@joseantoniodavila2752thank you for your response. I value your reply. I have a recently qualified horticultural student helping me with the land. Regarding climate debate. I think in general a broader debate is needed. If one poses questions about certain aspects of the climate debate and alarmism one is often shut down or called a denier. Climate is a highly complex issue with a lot of parameters and assumptions. There is debate in the scientific community that doesnt get proper coverage in the broader media. I could recommend listening to eg Steven Koonin (former Obama climate scientific advisor) or climatologist Judith Curry for some alternative views. Bjorn Lomborg has also interesting suggestions about what we should do about climate change ie how to invest effectively to have an impact.
Hi Stu, the olive oil here in the Netherlands has risen imensely. where one used to pay € 2.99 for 500 ml one now pays € 8.00 for the same amount of olive oil which is just too much! I Apreciate your videos very much and seriously considering of making the move 😉
@@jamestaverner6711 - Weather refers to localized day-to-day conditions like temperature, humidity, and precipitation. Climate, on the other hand, is the long-term average of these weather conditions, typically measured over multiple decades. While weather is always local, climate can be understood on different scales, such as local, regional, or global. When we hear that it's been the hottest spring, it's not the weather being discussed, but rather the long-term averages and patterns. This can be confusing because people often focus on how it feels outside their door or in their specific location. News reports usually reference regional or country-wide patterns. So, even if where you live it has been normal or cooler than expected, it doesn't mean the overall regional or country-wide climate hasn't spiked well above the norms.
Hi Stuart, whilst I can't comment on the weather in Torrevieja; I can tell you that the UK Met Office claiming that May in the UK was the hottest on record has been met with total incredulity not only by myself and and everyone I know, and indeed this has been the view on a number of TV and Radio programmes. It was actually one of the coldest, and very wettest. Thank God we now have some decent warm weather (21°C)!
Hi Stewart. Just like to thank you for all your hard work and all the information. I have learnt so much about the politics of Spain through you. Always look forward to your chats. Once again thank you. Keep up the good work. 👍
I don't remember when we started hearing "extra virgin olive oil." Aceite de oliva virgen extra. It doesn't matter in English or Spanish. It also has an acronym that I never remember, AVOVE or something like that in Spanish and I imagine EVOO in English. Like the LGTBTI collective or something more or less woke like that. Extra virgin olive oil has always been simply called oil. Then it was specified if it was early harvest or cold pressed when it was, and the variety if it was not a blend. It is easy to say sunflower oil or orujo oil while it's soooo long to say extra virgin olive oil of the early harvested and cold-pressed picual variety = Picual green oil.
Just a counter point on the weather, the people on TV who tell us what the weather will be are hired for their looks rather than their qualifications, so they dont know any more than you or I. Just like news presenters they dont need any formal qualifications, they are told what to say by the people who own the news company, and they say it!
