NEW 3D Printed RC Car Tires - Driving on Water!!!

- This is crazy! I'm driving a RC car on water by using custom made 3D printed tires. A few months back I failed driving on water, but discovered my 3D printed wheels worked great for traction on sand. However, now I'm back, and today we are driving the JLB Cheetah on water!
Here's the JLB Cheetah RC car: goo.gl/vCsNSf

I'm so greateful for all my loyal followers, and because of your comments I was able to make a new set of 3D printed tires that actually worked! The new tires have a much larger diameter and the paddles is fewer but significantly longer and much less angled.
The new tires was printed with only 5% infill, so there's much more air inside to keep it floating. In combination with a larger battery (4S 14.8V Lipo), the motor was able to keep the wheels turning and therefore keep it on top of the water.

This is awesome! Great video.
could you share the 3d file for us to print?
Can you make a fpv drone made with 3d printed parts? It would be awesome to see in action!

This is nice!
I bet
Yes like
Nice job brother!! Loved this style of video! :) Keep up the GREAT WORK! Wish I was there to play !!
When you put the old tires on, you put them on in their normal rotational position with respect to the tread design. That design is to force water out from the center of the tire - reduce hydroplaning. I'd be curious to see the tires put on backwards, with the tread rotation forcing water to the center of the tire. Would it induce hydroplaning? And if so, how much?
same toughts
Same thoughts here too, your printed paddles will still likely work better though.
You are stuoid
Charles Ragbir Stuoid? Hmm...
English please
You forgot to mention you sealed the electronics.
He mentioned that in the last video
Can we get the link to make the paddle tires and what scale is your car
The car could be alredy waterproof
The fact the car still ran after the attempt showed the electrics were protected.
Etro Qz
This is FREAKING AWESOME mate!!
I guess this will inspire lots of RC guys out there and we will start to see some crazy RC water cars soon haha
More voltage more POWEEEEERR ohhh yeaaahhh!!!
OLD SPICE POWEER
adam darras OLD SPICE... ohhh yeaaahhh haha
ElectricBike look up traxxas X maxx hydroplane
_RC_KING_ wooooowwww... this is traxxas is super AWESOME!!!! Thaaaanks for this one mate!!! =]
i watch your videos and your really funny :D
Now get a really long range remote
And install a crap ton of battery's then be the first person to drive a rc car over the ocean :D
lol do it, then make it a guiness world record
Maybe the sea of bothnia
Rc ship
yeah
Okay dude, that was just a bunch of fun! Well done!
Who is flying the drone? Very good looking video
Actually I am. That's why some of the drone shots are low quality, because I have to shoot in 4K and zoom in because it's difficult to line up the drone and car at the same time.
Nice Work. Flying and driving (and jumping)... Had med fooled
Was going to ask that too :P
It's a mavic, it can be set to follow something, be set to a path, and many more options.
did you use the auto follow in the mavic?? or does the DJI mavic not have that?
5:37 Several bugs climbing his neck for next few seconds :)
Videography of the year, Simon! The shots of the car where amazingly well done. Even pulling that U-turn in frame (how many takes?) was planned out.
Oh thank you so much! I really do appreciate it, and the number of takes was ∞.😂
such great material and style of presentation. Thanks a lot for sharing and Greetings from WW2HistoryHunter.
Can you please put this on thingiverse or grabcad!!!
Here you go: www.thingiverse.com/thing:2563605
Thanks!
Can you try making fully 3D printed shoes?
so off topic
If that car is only rwd you may make some new front tires that are smooth except for a ridge radially down the center that sticks up, so it'd act Luke a rudder for steering in the water
This one is a 4wd.
Wow driving car, boat, and drone at the same time! He’s got some skills.
3:33 omg lag in real life
Success! If it didn't work this time I was going to say you need more power! Clearly that and the larger diameter wheels made all the difference.
It's very interesting because I used like 50% throttle when driving on the water. I never mentioned it in the video but I did use the 3S battery and I was still able to go on the water with around half throttle. So from my findings I would say it's mostly about the tires. However, I would like to know whether it was the "air-filled" tires, length of the paddles or the increased size that made it work.
The diameter made a huge difference I am sure. Not sure if you have seen my hydroplaning videos but when done right you can hydroplane from a dead stop just inches from the water then ramp up the throttle input once the truck "planes off" similar to a boat on water. Once it planes off you can reach speeds just as fast as you can on land!
Oh yeah I could literally throw it into the water and it would take off. The RPM's required to hydroplane I think is only based on the size of the tires. The Cheetah only has a 2500KV motor, which I believe is quite low, right? But the gearing ratio makes it able to keep the tires spinning. What I'm trying to say is that on a Traxxas Slash (small tires) the RPM's has to be way up there to move enough water to keep it hydroplanning, while my tires are so wide the RPM's can be lower. Do you agree?
The surface area of the tires definitely makes a difference. I would also say the wider the tire, the slower you can approach the water without sinking.
Nice!! I'm curious, if you just set it on the water, did it float because of the tires, or did it sink from the weight?
Came here wondering the same
rgbii same, one is because the tire os light and the tire is for water paddling.
I think it should sink
It would sink from the weight.
It's only cause he is hitting the water at some speed.
That's not to say it is a fantastic achievement , I think it is.
*Insert vsauce “want to see the most illegal thing I own?” Meme format here*
Try putting stock wheels in front and custom in back
I think that would be even worse than full stock. The whole thing would dip face first into the water.
I'd rather do it backwards: custom only at front so to keep the nose up.
Do you think that the higher surface area from the stock wheels would help it stay up, while the back wheels would push it along? just a thought
I see this custom wheel as a double sword. Most of the surface is smooth as a means of intentional aquaplaning and the ridges provide traction by pretty much "grabbing" the water.
These stock wheels do *neither,* furthermore it's specifically designed to *dig* into loose surface, which is the opposite of ideal for driving on water, and that's why for this purpose you shouldn't have them at the front, if not also the back. In other words, the higher surface are is what slows it down.
Martín Varela I see what your saying, thanks for pointing that out to me.

You're welcome, and I wont deny I'd like to see it anyways.
I love these communities. If big company’s keep it up they will be replaced by 3d printing community’s.
Your my fav number one on RUclips!
What if when you print your T-Shirt 3D and not 2D (flat)? :D

can you drive this on a lake?
Great work. I feel like the angle of the wheel find would also make a difference. When I've seen this done on like motorcycles their wheels have little scoops on the.
Should also try adding a plane on it. Like a ski. That would help it significantly.
Buoyancy has nothing to do with a car hydroplaning it's all about surface area and speed. But well done great looking rig
I agree but if it had enough buoyancy it would keep the car afloat in the likely event that the battery died while driving.
C Murphy bouyancy has EVERYTHING to do with driving on water. Water bikes for example. They stay afloat while sitting still so speed means nothing with the correct tires
96joewill so your saying this car could drive on water slower?
96joewill are you also saying that when a normal size car hydroplanes that it is floating?( because of buoyancy)
96joewill try looking up "successfully compressing water" see if anybody has done that. Yes I could just give you the equation for when hydroplaning is likely to occur but what fun would that be?
wow amazing 3d printed wheel's
Brutal...
U kinda look like morgz
Nice work Simon! You didn't loose hope and now u succed !! Keep doing your great work!!
He is using a metal gear?
Snake, get that metal gear to safety.
Metal Gear Solid
That is amazing😮👍🏻 I like the fiberlogy Filament
Atlast!! By your hard work and detention you done it!! Favourite channel man!!! But the drone shot was awesome and who controlled the drone.👍👍👍

Wow!! Cool!
Great footage by the way with the drone 👍🏻
3:15 is what you came for
Very cool man!
Hey the CO2 rockets guy, nice videos. Thanks for watching!
Thanks a lot Simon. I appreciate it!
Nice Smile More merch......Roman Atwood is awesome
*YES AT **4:00*
Make in big enough to sit in it, then sell it to the USA Armee !!!
Like Like Like.
Nice video bro!
The RC car companies should give you big dollars for the design and then make them for the people all over the world!
Nice work! Talk to them.
Did you Simon?
i spotted the smilemore hat that he was wearing
the way he throws the car down....i'm like ouch mahn don't 😌
Siiiiiiik
Bad ass tires man.. I have to get my self a 3D printing machine
I have a blueshell for the first
Wait im first ... noooo
Noob Master can you explain what you meant to say ? I don't get it
Etro its a mario kart reference, if you are in 1st place, someone in like 11th or 12th place is going to use it. Then the blue shell comes directly towards you and blows you up. Then you become 3rd or 4th
Next thing I do that and a camon come for it and can not catch is
I see that smile more hat lel
Water you think your doing?
smile more
*YES AT **4:00*
Really, really nice! But hey... Why don't you make a RC car from scratch, 3d printing what's possible and so on? That would be a great project an could work better than the 3d.printed rc plane. ;)
3:20 make a rainbow
Eko Trisno did you know homosexuals are gay
You are just awesome
Did people really think the tyres needed to be filled with air 😂
Well, that would help, the less weight and bigger volume it has the biggest chances of floating, of course this car is not really floating due to any sort of buoyancy force but it's propelling itself upwards with the design of the tires, but filling it with air is a good guess for someone that's still learning physics, no need to mock those who might think that way, that would only discourage them from learning physics
Selur91 I was taught displacement at the age of about 5
Putting different shapes of plasticine in water to see what floated. Round ball no, flat yes.
it's awsome
Can you put helium in the tire next time
it wont really make much of a difference. you might as well have a vacuum in the tires at that point to reduce weight instead
I suppose you could enclose your entire printer in a pressurized helium chamber for 3d prints with helium inside.
Even if it was sealed well, it would leak out through the plastic in a matter of minutes.
rAiNbOw'o mEtEr I don't think that will work
Kan you mak me a 3d rasping drone and i love your videos.😎
Romansoldier
*YES **4:00*
You have given toy industry a new boost bro
insanely AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can you make one with like 3-4 inch long paddles just to use as stilts
If the paddles are too long, the wheels will lose speed, and the car will sink.
Pretty zippy little car. Thanks for sharing.
Ok mate? Where did it go on water? I'm a little disappointed
Nick StoneMiner are you stupid
Nick StoneMiner Did you even watch the video?
Wheelie Will 3:38, you can see it hydroplaning by the way it sways and skips!
I'm so happy for you
And I am working on a 3d printed high efficiency RC car and I'll print the weill
JUST UNTIL MY DELTA PRINTER WORK (IT'S A MADNESS )
HAVE A NICE DAY.
4:03 ESSKETIT I was wearing the same Roman Atwood camouflage “smile more” hat as well 🤣😂
Plastic is perfectly fine for a spur gear. It doesn't matter what size battery you run. Also... you dont need 4 cell. 2 cell is more than enough speed and power to bash with.

I'm a simple man. I see "Driving on Water!", I click.
It's so funny how every RC toy guy handles RC cars the same way. Throwing them and grabbing them like an idiot just to push the suspension. Everyone is so childish.
Awesome video! Never thought of 3D printed tires. Not as cool as yours but we made our fist RC video (Fidget Spinner Hill vs RC Crawler). Feel free to check it out. Thx!
Is your car 4 wheel drive or just Rear wheel drive. If 4WD, I’d be interested to see if it still works on a RWD vehicle.
Will those 3D wheels work on a 1/5 scale like a dBXL. Can you sell me a set on ebay! And how much does the 3D machine cost if I have to buy one. I'm from the USA if you are willing to sell
Sooo.... your simon eh, your videos and channel is very inspirational just subscribed very fun work place to use rcs enjoyed very much, where Ya located ?
Canada for me, cheers
spray paint them black lol
Could be optimised with some basic knowledge of thermodynamics and using software like Qblade
These videos blew up because if your videos are quality and good you'll get views
You could try making a boat-like thing with your 3D printer for under the rc car
You should take off with your mavic from sand. The fine particles will get sucked into the rotor wash and possibly into the gimbal or motor.
Instead of using paddle tires on the front just design a set of slicks with one extruded “fin” around the center of the tire about 1.5 to 2 millimeters thick. 👍🏻 Less drag and still steers good 👍🏻
could something like this works for a real life size truck for people???
You should try using the new tires on just the rear wheels, smoother tires on the front, with a line down the middle of the tire ( this will help with steering, and the smoothness will reduce the "bouncing" you are getting when on the water.) If you want to improve even further, on the flapped wheels, on the flaps themselves, have a "hatch-back" style dynamic. So its still a scoop in the water, but the trailing edge tapers down rather than cuts off. think more like a wedge than a lip.
How much I dreamt about this as a kid ! Great job !
very cool desing in 3d, can you re-build, faster, bigger and bether the vintage xrc Ricochet from kenner ?
4:02 This the moment when u realize. "I don't need a woman to feel happy." haha
Tjena mannen. Grym Jesus bil, Skulle du kunna göra en armborst med dina 3-D skrivare? Skulle vara fett coolt.
Awesome Bro :)
Thank you!
Wow that is really cool you you went and hit the drawing board and was able to find something that works through trial and error and you came out on top with a product that works well! Great job I'm subscribing for sure!
do you also prefer the white champaign bottles?
You did everything I said in previous video even though I think you didn't read my comment but taht means that I am pretty good at science :D :D :D :D
Why do RC guys drop and flop their cars around? Like handle them so rough? Weird.
They need this on the hot wheels sky shock car it’s an rc car that can also fly. Search it up cuz I’m no good at explaining:/
try like traxxas slash or somthing what isnt crap
Bra jobbat! Såg din videon på ditt första försök, kul att se att det tillslut fungerade. Tumme upp!
Hey... I have a feeling that with the old tires it would have done better on water if you had put them backwards so that they scoop the water the same way as your custom tires, instead of just plowing through the water.. You could maybe try that, at least I'm curious to see the results?
You dont need to 3d print tires. They sell paddle tires for almost every wheel size on the market.
Can it run on waves
And just it ruunning on water reminds me of "Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Cool Printed Tires- I really liked the comparison. Thanks
The vakar bison can run 4s its just trial and error to get the gear mesh right and it will work flawsley
Nice one bud, congrats! Looks like 190+ people failed lol
Tjena Simon, DHK Zombie 8e is ordered. Now we have to go to sjölanda to make a lots of nice videos.
Awesome, that's a nice car!
Omg. Dont copy british tanks in ww2.
You should try making bigger flaps it should work on water and sand too!
