NEW 3D Printed RC Car Tires - Driving on Water!!!

  • This is crazy! I'm driving a RC car on water by using custom made 3D printed tires. A few months back I failed driving on water, but discovered my 3D printed wheels worked great for traction on sand. However, now I'm back, and today we are driving the JLB Cheetah on water!
    Here's the JLB Cheetah RC car: goo.gl/vCsNSf
    STL files: www.thingivers...
    Flexible filament 40D: fiberlogy.com/e...
    I'm so greateful for all my loyal followers, and because of your comments I was able to make a new set of 3D printed tires that actually worked! The new tires have a much larger diameter and the paddles is fewer but significantly longer and much less angled.
    The new tires was printed with only 5% infill, so there's much more air inside to keep it floating. In combination with a larger battery (4S 14.8V Lipo), the motor was able to keep the wheels turning and therefore keep it on top of the water.

    When you put the old tires on, you put them on in their normal rotational position with respect to the tread design. That design is to force water out from the center of the tire - reduce hydroplaning. I'd be curious to see the tires put on backwards, with the tread rotation forcing water to the center of the tire. Would it induce hydroplaning? And if so, how much?

    If that car is only rwd you may make some new front tires that are smooth except for a ridge radially down the center that sticks up, so it'd act Luke a rudder for steering in the water

  • @rcfrenzy
    @rcfrenzy 7 лет назад +3

    Success! If it didn't work this time I was going to say you need more power! Clearly that and the larger diameter wheels made all the difference.

    • @RcLifeOn
      @RcLifeOn  7 лет назад +2

      It's very interesting because I used like 50% throttle when driving on the water. I never mentioned it in the video but I did use the 3S battery and I was still able to go on the water with around half throttle. So from my findings I would say it's mostly about the tires. However, I would like to know whether it was the "air-filled" tires, length of the paddles or the increased size that made it work.

    • @rcfrenzy
      @rcfrenzy 7 лет назад +1

      The diameter made a huge difference I am sure. Not sure if you have seen my hydroplaning videos but when done right you can hydroplane from a dead stop just inches from the water then ramp up the throttle input once the truck "planes off" similar to a boat on water. Once it planes off you can reach speeds just as fast as you can on land!

    • @RcLifeOn
      @RcLifeOn  7 лет назад +1

      Oh yeah I could literally throw it into the water and it would take off. The RPM's required to hydroplane I think is only based on the size of the tires. The Cheetah only has a 2500KV motor, which I believe is quite low, right? But the gearing ratio makes it able to keep the tires spinning. What I'm trying to say is that on a Traxxas Slash (small tires) the RPM's has to be way up there to move enough water to keep it hydroplanning, while my tires are so wide the RPM's can be lower. Do you agree?

    • @rcfrenzy
      @rcfrenzy 7 лет назад +1

      The surface area of the tires definitely makes a difference. I would also say the wider the tire, the slower you can approach the water without sinking.

  • @rgbii2
    @rgbii2 7 лет назад +28

    Nice!! I'm curious, if you just set it on the water, did it float because of the tires, or did it sink from the weight?

    • @quipstad

      Came here wondering the same

    • @lemting2264
      @lemting2264 6 лет назад

      rgbii same, one is because the tire os light and the tire is for water paddling.

    • @aadviksagreiya4230
      @aadviksagreiya4230 5 лет назад +1

      I think it should sink

    • @davidfarmer2049
      @davidfarmer2049 5 лет назад

      It would sink from the weight.
      It's only cause he is hitting the water at some speed.
      That's not to say it is a fantastic achievement , I think it is.

    Try putting stock wheels in front and custom in back

    • @MrtinVarela
      @MrtinVarela 7 лет назад +4

      I think that would be even worse than full stock. The whole thing would dip face first into the water.
      I'd rather do it backwards: custom only at front so to keep the nose up.

    • @cartertomasko8686
      @cartertomasko8686 7 лет назад

      Do you think that the higher surface area from the stock wheels would help it stay up, while the back wheels would push it along? just a thought

    • @MrtinVarela
      @MrtinVarela 7 лет назад +1

      I see this custom wheel as a double sword. Most of the surface is smooth as a means of intentional aquaplaning and the ridges provide traction by pretty much "grabbing" the water.
      These stock wheels do *neither,* furthermore it's specifically designed to *dig* into loose surface, which is the opposite of ideal for driving on water, and that's why for this purpose you shouldn't have them at the front, if not also the back. In other words, the higher surface are is what slows it down.

    • @nixietubes
      @nixietubes 6 лет назад +1

      I agree but if it had enough buoyancy it would keep the car afloat in the likely event that the battery died while driving.

      Well, that would help, the less weight and bigger volume it has the biggest chances of floating, of course this car is not really floating due to any sort of buoyancy force but it's propelling itself upwards with the design of the tires, but filling it with air is a good guess for someone that's still learning physics, no need to mock those who might think that way, that would only discourage them from learning physics

    You could try making a boat-like thing with your 3D printer for under the rc car

    You should take off with your mavic from sand. The fine particles will get sucked into the rotor wash and possibly into the gimbal or motor.

    Instead of using paddle tires on the front just design a set of slicks with one extruded “fin” around the center of the tire about 1.5 to 2 millimeters thick. 👍🏻 Less drag and still steers good 👍🏻

    could something like this works for a real life size truck for people???

    You should try using the new tires on just the rear wheels, smoother tires on the front, with a line down the middle of the tire ( this will help with steering, and the smoothness will reduce the "bouncing" you are getting when on the water.) If you want to improve even further, on the flapped wheels, on the flaps themselves, have a "hatch-back" style dynamic. So its still a scoop in the water, but the trailing edge tapers down rather than cuts off. think more like a wedge than a lip.

    Hey... I have a feeling that with the old tires it would have done better on water if you had put them backwards so that they scoop the water the same way as your custom tires, instead of just plowing through the water.. You could maybe try that, at least I'm curious to see the results?

    You dont need to 3d print tires. They sell paddle tires for almost every wheel size on the market.
