Plenty of ASH 1

- After nearly a month, we are back. Life, and crashed video software kept us from uploading to our channel.
Life has slowed a bit, and we have learned how to use our new software.
This is the first of a few videos featuring 40 or so ash logs, all from one location. All were seriously declining, and had to be removed. We are doing our part to save as much ash as we can, as the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) are destroying the species.
So sit back and enjoy, and let us know how you like the new software editing.

Love watching your piece of equipment cutting, flipping, and moving the logs. 👍 AMAZING!!
Deb is quite the worker. Reads you like a book. Enjoy watching.
Hello Marlene,, and welcome to the mill. Deb is an awesome worker. Team work makes the dream work.
Thank you for checking out our channel.
Sorry to hear about the accident. I'm glad that Deb is okay. Good to see the mill in action. Nice job!
Ths is guys. We are just hoping to settle with the insurance. They are being a pain. I'm just glad Deb is ok.
Good to be milling, and able to edit as well.
In my local garden centre, there are planters made from the outer flitches, the bark has been removed and the ones that have uniform end thickness have been mitred but the ones that are not uniform in thickness have just butted ends with an outer corner 2x2 cut in half (triangular), some are pre-built but the large square and long rectangular ones are in the kit form with drilled pilot bolt-holes and 2x2 corner braces, some also have plastic liners sold separately (these could be made by cutting polythene into strips and seal them together with one of those bag sealers.
I thought I would mention it as this could be an extra income stream for you.
We made some of those in the past. Time is the issue now, so we sell the flitches sometimes, for crafters, and others to make planters, and other things.
Thank you for the suggestion. There may come a time where we will need to do this. Always a good idea to have other income options.
Sorry to hear about Deb's accident, I hope she is doing well. God bless and keep the good work coming.
She is doing quite well. Upset now, because she lost her vehicle, but looking forward to another one.
Thank you for the compliment, and we will have more shortly.
Very nice lumber all the way around! Good to see your Sawyer Foreman getting the job done. Great project manager! 2 👍 s up for team work! Didn't know you have a pet dog, seems she was out and about checking her texts, emails, and Instagram from Claude and the gang. It's always nice to see the nanamils in there. However, I loved the background! I really enjoyed your stacked firewood with the different colors from the different species. Just like fall. Thanks for brightening up my day you three 👍👍
Thank you very much Barry. We have a good time milling, and it's good to have Debs knowledge when we are out on a job. She field all questions, and I run the mill. It allows me to stay focused. Shes a great mill director when we are out as well. Let's the customer, and his helpers know what to do. They are always surprised that her and I usually work alone e. Surprised we can do all the work.
Unfortunately, we lost our pup to old age a few weeks ago. She was 16, and lead a spoiled life. She was a great dog for sure.
That woodshed always gets compliments. Holds 10 to 12 cords. O e half for this season, the other half for next. We stay ahead of it, and fill each side right after its empty, its dry and ready to go when we need it.
The area is beautiful. We love it here. Kinda wish we had a little more land though. The leaves will be turning soon. We love the cooler weather so we can be outside without cooking in the heat.
@@IronOakSawmill yep, im a cold weather guy. Sorry for the loss of Trish, my little girl Fannie is 15 and I dread the day coming quickly!
@@barrywest3758 we were not surprised when she passed. She was having issues, but not in any pain. We hate to have to take them to the vet for that "final ride". So glad we did not have to for her. She hated the vet, and she would have been scared. We didnt want that for her.
I see that Deb is a big help for you. Even if she is missing...occasionally. LOL. 😉
prayers for Miss Deb and a great video !!!
Deb and I thank you. She is doing well.
Hope to improve the videos with this new software. We shall see.
You need to gets some forks for you tractor bucket, it make it a lot easier to move that STUFF (lumber) around. Good sawing, I'm jealous of that great hard wood you get.
I wish I could find a good set for this tractor. Or maybe a larger machine all together.
Thank you for the compliments. We love the trees here as well. They yield some beautiful lumber.
Glad you're back, missed you guys!
It's great to be back. Alot of jobs popping up as well, with the cooler weather here. Hope to get some video of those mill jobs as well.
Thank you for staying with us. We missed being out here, on RUclips.
nice firewood shed you have
That thing gets so many compliments. Lol. Thank you. After years of stacking on pallets, and throwing a tarp over it, Deb got tired of it, so I pro.ised her a woodshed. Well, a wood shed she got.
Holds about 10 to 12 cords. One side per season. We stay ahead of it, and never run out of wood. It definitely beats the pallets and tarps.
Thank You. :)
Prayers for Deb, that’s some beautiful wood
Thank you Donald. I'm thankful everyday that it was just damage to the vehicle.
Deb says Thank You as well.
More to come with the ash, and some of that black walnut as well.
I heard a Racoon chattering in the background ( had headphones on)
That does sound like a racoon, but is actually a great tree frog.

Glad to see your back! Really enjoy your videos!
Good to be running again. Mostly, it's good to have Deb healthy and happy.
@@IronOakSawmill Yes, that's whats most important!
I'm glad that your wife is OK. I enjoy your videos, but you and Deb are more important. I hope that Deb gets the car of her dreams. Well, it would be nice if you like it too. God Bless.
Thank you very much. We needed a little time to catch up. It's been hectic. It's great to be back. We missed posting g videos for everyone.
Deb is searching for one she really likes. I told her that we may make a video about it as well.
God Bless you as well friend.
Missed you guys but take care of Deb first. Deb I hope you are doing better and everything works out for you.
Thank you very much. Deb is doing great. We are moving forward with getting her a vehicle. We just need to find one that she likes.
I would enjoy seeing some video, or at least a description, of how you moved all these logs. Would be quite the chore with your tractor and trailer, did you hire transportation out?
For these logs, we used our latest addition. It's an F250 diesel truck, and the dump trailer from the tree service that cut them down
. Before this, it's been our 12 foot landscape trailer, and our Toyota Tacoma most of the time. I did have a friend haul quite a few logs in the past. There are a few videos of us loading and moving with the little truck and trailer.
We hope to add a big trailer in the near future, with a winch, and a loading arch.
I made an ethanol remover with old propane tanks. Very simple and cheap and works perfectly if you follow the three easy steps.
I can tell you about it if your interested, no charge! unless I build it for you.
No need for for a still here. Lol
Just a bit curious about where you will use the 4x4 , 6x6 , and 8x8 ash timbers . I only got half way through the video so far . sorry if you explained this later in the video .
Thank you for your question. At the moment, I dont have a use for them, although I'm thinking about a timber framed structure. Possibly a garage if local codes allow. I do have demand around here for them as well.
The 4x4s have been made into table legs in the past, and used in turning projects as well.
Good looking ash; don't have any ideal what I use it for I'm kind out of the wood working business now after moving off the farm in LA (Lower Alabama), moved on up town just south of Birmingham to move closer to the kids, don't know if that is good or bad, : ) : ). by the way that beam you did the last video looked good. TA & Sue from Alabaster, AL
Hello TA and welcome to the mill. I believe ash is under rated. Beautifull grain, and color.
Hope you can get back into the business some day. Maybe do some turning on a lathe. Thats one of my favorite things to do.
The owner of that beam was thrilled to have it. He installed it, and it fit beautifully. A bit of a challenge, but it worked out.
Say hello to Sue, from Deb and I.
100 octane aviation fuel is really great, if your station does not have ethanol free fuel. Caseys is a farm community gas station with ethanol free.
We have a few small airports around where we could get the aviation fuel. Thank You. That's good to know if our current place shuts down.
I have a bunch of ash waiting for me to get to. Mostly standing dead. Ron
There is alot of it around. The emerald ash borer is destroying the species. That's the main reason I'm saving all I can. Glad to see you are doing the same.
Two questions, those head sets you wear, do they allow you to talk to each other? Also that tape measure on your hip, Do you have a link to it. looks like a helpful tool to have.
Yes, those headset allow us to talk to each other. We did a video on them. Check it out.
(Answering the most asked question)
Here is a link to the holder that I use for my tape measure. It works awesome.
"Magtite Tape Holster: Tape Measure Magnetic Holster" www.ustape.com/catalog/magnetic-tape-holster/magtite-tape-holster/
Thanks for telling when orders are for full size pieces, as in a 2x4 you made. I don't understand why wood is measured 1/4" short, do you? Is it tradition? Nice 4x4's, 7 out of the log.
I wish the lumber was the same size as well. Much easier to do calculation.
Isn't having the logs ram into the saw like that going to cause alignment problems? Terry
Hello Terry. Very good question. The logs hitting the mill in this manner have not caused an issue with alignment. I believe it would take a much larger hit than that, to cause an issue.
Thank you for your question, and welcome to the channel.
Do you get a better yield by cutting 4by and 6by material that way rather than starting with the biggest square cant you can get? Ill be cutting u a bunch tomorrow morning as well.
Wow, how did I miss this one.
If you cut properly, you will have a bit more waste. All the trimming you have to do to get things straight creates waste
I would not know where to go for non-ethanol fuel, do you get a discounted fuel for machinery in the US?
We are lucky to have a gas station that sells non-ethanol fuel only. Its actually an extra $1 per gallon. The only discounted fuel is something they cal "off-road" diesel.
What country do you live in?
@@IronOakSawmill I live in England and we have a diesel that is stained red for agricultural, heating and machinery and is not taxed as much as vehicle fuel
@@AndrewAHayes thats the same here. They check road going trucks from time to time. They "dip the tank" to see if any red dye shows on the dip. Big fines if you get caught.
I've noticed tha your head and motor does a lot of shaking, doesn't that throw off your measurements?
It does bounce a bit when I first engage the blade, but quickly settles. I make sure just before it enters the cut. If I engage the blade a little slower, it doesn't bounce at all.
do you buy logs or ppl drop them off to you to slab them up and pay you
Hello, and welcome to the mill. We do all of that. We do buy logs. We work with 2 tree service companies, where we get logs. Sometimes just need to pick them up, other times, we pay the landowner for them. People do bring their logs here for us to mill for them, but we also take the mill to them, and mill on site.
Most of what we get is storm damaged, or hazardous trees that are removed.
How much did that sawmill cost? 40k?
Not something we like to discuss, but you can build and price one to your specifications at
Woodmizer.com
For carbs I use Amazon
I've thought about it, but like the original carbs. Hope I dont need any with the non-ethanol. So far, so good.
Thank you for the suggestion. Do you recommend a certain name?
@@IronOakSawmill so far all brands they sell have been great and I do groundskeeper work so I go through a number of carbs and rebuild kits ( the few you can ) a year
@@southern207hobbies thank you. May save me some cash as well.
@@IronOakSawmill anytime
That was a quick hour. Where does time go.
There are a few more hours to go. Hope to have more videos soon. We got some video of those black walnut logs as well. They may be next. Keep watching :)
Where did you get all that ash?
Local tree service a buddy of mine owns. One lot needed all the dead and dieing ash removed. We are saving as much of the lumber as we can.
Wait til you see what we were offered today. WOW WOW WOW.
I can’t wait to see. I’m impatiently waiting for my mill to come. I’m going crazy not having one here
@@WillowRunMills I know how you feel. Went about a month between the LT15, and the LT35HD.
I think I'll post a few pics of what I'm talking about, in the community section.
Get yourself set up for bigger production, and how to deal with it. The 35 will crank out much more than the 15. Take your time, and get used to the controls. Any questions, let me know.
Mine will be here on the 17th so I think I will get it on the 19th and use it. Then on the 26th I will know if I have any questions to ask at open house
Do you get any complaints from ECO crazies?
Not at all. All of the ash trees around here are dying out, due to the EAB. Also, we buy our logs from tree services most of the time. Storm damaged, hazardous tree removals. Most would end up in landfills. We keep them around for many more years, by sawing them into lumber and slabs.
I'm willing to speak to any folks who feel that way, about our business.
Although trees are a renewable resource, we don't like to see any of them go to waste.
@@IronOakSawmill Great answer. Thanks for keeping small business going.
@@michaelpaton8818 just doing my part.
Ow long have you and Den been milling together??
We've been milling for about 8 years now.
