HAKGALA BOTANICAL GARDEN, NUWARAELIYA, SRI LANKA
Hakgala botanical garden is situated nearby nuwaraeliya - badulla main road about 10 K.M. away from nuwaraeliya town. The garden was established in 1861. And also it situated at the base of hakgala mountain. Hakgala Botanical Garden is one of the five botanical gardens in Sri Lanka. The others are Peradeniya,Henarathgoda,Mirijjawila and Seethawaka botanical gardens.This garden has a cool temperature because of altitude is about 5500 feet above the see level. From december to february it has a cold climate. Best time to visit here in april & may.

Bulb garden,Rose gardens,Lower and upper flower gardens,Fern garden,Rock garden,Student's garden,japanese garden,Summer houses(Nock summer hut) etc.
Plantation areas
Casuarina plantation,Eucaliptus plantation,Melajeuca plantation,Camphor plantation,Pinus plantation, Acacia plantation.
The garden was established in 1861, under the patronage of Dr. G.H.K. Thwaites as an experimental cultivation of Cinchona. In 1884 it transformed to a botanical garden. Since then many sub tropical and some temperate plants were planted in the garden.
There are over 10,000 species of flora planted here and during the Spring season in Nuwara Eliya
thousands of visitors come to see the blooms here.
According to the legends, the history of Hakgala Gardens dates back to the time of king Ravana. It say Hakgala was his herbal garden. King ravana was one of the great scholar in ayurvedic medicine.Hisory say he lived here over 5000 years ago.
The magnificent rose garden, conifers, cedars, cypresses, variety of pines and English oak are just a few examples of the diversity of plant life that is seen here.
