Festool Systainers: What are they and why do I use them?

- Hey everyone! Wanted to give a quick glimpse into how and why I use Systainers. They are not for everyone, but I have found they are what work best for me and my shop. Hope you enjoyed and found this to be at least a little informative. Take care!

Great video, one of the best explanation of the advantages of the systainer system. Festool should pay you for this video. I started buying Festool about a year ago. I now have 10 of these boxes of various shapes and sizes. They are addictive. The way they fit together, the T hinge in front and now built in front handles is really cool. I didn't know about the Sys3 version and I have 3 accessory front handles on my gen 2 boxes. The only thing stopping me from completely going systainer like you is the cost. It would take another couple of grand in boxes and inserts to complete the change. Instead, I use HF narrow parts boxes for the small nuts and bolts stuff. At less than 10 dollars a box, instead of $85 and up, it makes more sense monetarily. BUT I have two systems and that isn't as efficient. My favorite Festool tool are their sanders and CT26 extractor. I have two sanders and love them. I also have the Domino 500 but it is a bit of a love/hate relationship. And I cannot get all the Domino accessories I have obtained and get them in the original systainer. I store the Domino 500 separately in a cabinet in my shop. Not the best situation but it works for now until I figure out something different. I love your shop arrangement. Very neat and efficient. Regards

A great introduction to the Festool system. I really appreciate your informative videos, Brian. I wish Festool made a light weight drawer type rack that could be easily taken to and from the boot of the car. I use the same car for work and leisure. I now have three Systainers on top of each other and it is inconvenient to reach to the end of the three-foot long boot, lift two Systainers off and then get what I want from the bottom most one.

I’ve spent a lot of time and money trying to avoid systainers because of they’re cost.
I’ve built my own modular cabinet systems. I’ve bought a few different stacking systems and none of them are as easy to use as systainers. The older I get the more I value my time and ease of use so systainers it is.
You’re videos helped me see that I was wasting a ton of effort not standardizing
Thanks Robert. They are for sure not economical, but I like having almost all of my tools in the same size containers (Systainers). I too have gone back and forth with different storage ideas and still come back to the Systainers. Funny some of the comments I get on these things….apparently LOTS of people hate them😉
Even though I'm into milwaukee's packout system, it's hard to deny the genius of festool including a syatainer with every tool. You buy their tools, you're already into the system. Then you start shopping for more systainers of different varieties. The gears turn, and before you know it, you have a shop that looks like Brian's, in which you used systainers as your walls lol ;-)
Seriously though, they're an incredibly efficient storage solution and not all that costly when you think about it. Look at your shop, and now imagine all those systainers you have as shop built drawers. You'd spend a decent amount in materials, and more importantly, a lot of time building them. Not to mention losing the portability aspect of being able to make a systainer stack of tools/materials needed and bringing them to the jobsite.

Edit to add: I still might grab a few of the mini systainers in anthracite. They're a great size for a lot of things and there's no packout that small.

They are economical if you remember time is money. You don't waste time at work if you are organised.
Also, at the end of a long day and it's time to pack my tools back into my van, I am so glad I have systainers.

Thank you! I was trying figure out what these darn things are. I mean, I understood that they were storage boxes....but beyond that, I was trying to figure out why they were so expensive and what made them unique. A very useful video.

I use both the L-Box and systainer systems. Originally the L-Box’s were larger so I can group tools together. One box has all my makita 18v tools in etc.

This is similar to the Bosch L-Boxx system by Sortimo. Bosch used to sell many of their cordless tools with the L-Boxx and the proper inserts. They still do, but you have you get them from Europe. I have many of them and they are also very versatile.
Your enthusiasm for Festool mirrors mine for Bosch power tools.
I still use an old Bosch jigsaw that I wouldn’t give up for anything.

Having a small space in my house to do woodworking, I love systainers. Keeps all my tools organized and protected. Grab a systainer and go when doing work at another location. I’m in the thinking process of possibly getting Sortainers now for screws and little tools like hex tools, screwdrivers, etc. So many options, not sure what Sortainer to start with.
I really like mine. I think the 3 drawer ones are great because of the countless options you have with those. You can get extra smaller bins to fit in the drawers to however you see fit.
Really appreciate this video, I have a few Makita Mak Pac boxes, but the four clips are very clunky and are prone to falling off, I bought the 3 draw systainer and in my opinion money well spent, really nice organising items like Collins mitre clamps and miscellaneous stuff, recently saved up for systainer cart and the gen 3 22 box systainer organiser. I will admit there are cheaper alternatives but I appreciate the T-loc too much, offers a lot of versatility, efficiency, and can increase productivity thanks to the organisation it gives you.

I’m surprised that they didn’t design the rails on the gen3 such that they slide out enough to open. I do like the clear lid on the new small parts organizer though. Do they still make the colored boxes for them?
So, the colored storage boxes do not work on the Gen3 organizer with the clear lid. They only work on the gen2 T-Loc, but they do still sell them separately, or as a complete kit.
What do you think of your double mft? I have 1 and was thinking of getting another and mounting them both on an 8' bench/cart. And then I'm going to shift the kerf to the left on the right hand mft, giving me a little more cutoff support . I'm with you, on its legs they are really unstable, but I understand... they were designed to be mobile and transported easily from job to job, but mine are stationary in the shop.
I like having two now that I have it setup the way I like it. I can put all of my material on the left table while cutting on the right. Overall, anytime I have more tabletop to work on I’m happy!

I’m using the dewalt tough system and the Milwaukee ones for painting tools. They are heavy empty, by the time I load them up with all the patching knives and other tools they become really heavy and inconvenient in tiny stairways. I’m planning to switch to these, they’re much lighter.
I made this switch 2 years ago because of back problem. Best storage system for me.

They sure do. Comes in a Sys1 container with a foam insert that takes either 1/4 or 1/2 shanked bits.

Thanks. But, there is NO difference other than the color. They are the same company, just branded differently for Festool.

My problem with systainers (or any other "chest" type of storage) is that every time you need something it is always at the bottom of the tower. Drawers are so much more convenient and easier on the back. I hope that Festool will come up with their own drawer units because as of right now, in my opinion Milwaukee's Packout system is superior to Systainers.

Everyone assumes we all knew about how these work when we came out of the womb. It seems to take at least a day of research to work out which one to buy first and what works with what.
There are a lot of options, but at least with the Festool Systainers, they ALL work together in some type of manner.

OK, Me again. Same topic.
Toolboxes are fine for site work. Granted. But for a workshop?
Compare a systainer in a sysport with a drawer.
1) Access takes extra steps (unlock, open, close, lock). Undeniably more effort.
2) the bottom, top, sides, and back take space. Amazingly, more than half the space. So it steals half of your storage space. Undeniably poorer density.
3) just increase the front depth of the slide and you have a drawer. A systainer is undeniably just added cost.
So what possible argument is there for using them? Only aesthetics. They are an art installation. Is that what you really want in a workshop?
For site use, I keep a custom adapted toolbox with dedicated tools. Expensive? Probably less than your toolboxes. And it is always ready to go. As a bonus, I have a 'spare' tool should one fail.
The main issue with systainers as toolboxes is that center catch. Takes valuable space in the middle, making carry handles and especially drawers a problem. Both Milwaukee and DeWalt have solved the stacking problem better, with hands free connect and one touch release, whilst retaining dual point latching for strength and water rating.
They have had three goes at fixing the problems and whilst better, they are still flawed. Now they find they are too small, and have added even more complexity while compromising the stacking that is supposed to be the point.
Festool ship in systainers because they understand that humans like collecting. We are pack rats. They want to hook you into the system. But it is not rational.

Guess because 99% of my Systainers are the Festool branded ones and not the Tanos versions
