absolutely cannot believe this video only has 100000 or so hits. An incredible period in Canadian music that is quietly disappearing from memory.

This entire album is amazing. 1987 I was just going into high school and my sister used to give me a ride to class in North Vancouver Windsor Secondary and play this cassette every morning., I think the whole high school listened to this classic

Excellent harmonies and lyrics, my favourite band by a country mile. I remember listening to the Grapes with my girlfriend back in 88 many times after school. I had the pleasure of seeing them at Barrymore’s in the late 90’s with my wife (my girlfriend back in 88).

Great song. A Grapes of Wrath favorite. These guys are a favorite Canadian band of mine. Saw them open for 54-40 here in Victoria BC at the Royal Theatre 3 years ago. Great show with two great Canadian bands. Grapes of Wrath are definitely one of many underrated Canadian bands.

Ahead of their time? not really, REM had this same sound since 1982. In fact when the Treehouse album came out they were immediate compared to REM.

    • @jeffreyquinn3820
      @jeffreyquinn3820 11 месяцев назад +1

@@SaintMartins I'm not convinced that they were as derivative of REM as a lot of people made out. (Musically, at least. Hairstyles, yes.) Both bands had a unique intensity to them, which the music press really didn't know how to deal with. I'm told GoW's concerts were also a very different experience than REM's of a similar time period. (I've seen GoW a few times, but REM's never been close to my neck of the woods.)

Such a wonderful song and video. Ya know, it's wonderful to have a part of our own culture making up our culture, as a young Vancouverite of the time. They were of what was going on elsewhere, but also of here. Ours, ya know? I remember them playing the Comodore Ballroom when I was 15, and asking the audience to move back and sit down, and like good hippies we gladly obliged. : )

    Lyrics:
    Coming over mountains
that pale beside the wall between us now
since I refuse to play alone
    it's always been another
to do the damage you live everyday
and leave you cursing for escape
Each day I see a ball and chain
grow a little more in grain
    and watch your corner pain
    say'in nothing
    nothing's gonna change
why is the world so damn unkind
to one so righteous in her mind
the sun won't rise and shine
will you never find your peace of mind
    My father couldn't bother
to play the kind of role the job required
    instead of trying he retired
with so much shit to conquer
to feel a long while so-called friends don't phone
you know the pain is not their own
Each day I see a ball and chain
    grow a little more engrained
    and watch your corner pain
    say'in nothing
    nothing's gonna change
why is the world so damn unkind
to one so righteous in the mind
the sun won't rise and shine
will you never find your peace of mind
    Coming over mountains
to feel the tension hiding in these walls
you see a trace of spirit fall
    my father couldn't bother
but now he's back to find his place again
sorry but the book's been burned
Each day I see a ball and chain
    grow a little more engrained
    and watch your corner pain
    say'in nothing
    nothing's gonna change
why is the world so damn unkind
to one so righteous in her mind
the sun won't rise and shine
will you never find your peace of mind
    your peace of mind
    your peace of mind

Perhaps one of this song's particular charms is it isn't over produced with abundant editing and too many fingers in the pie. Pair this 80s song against the overly digital songs of today, when a soloist sings along a recording of their own voice, with an entire orchestra as backup. There's no comparison, right? 😉The Grapes rule! The purity of their voices and skill with their instruments is all that's required to make it memorable. It isn't that there weren't other good bands at the same time; it's that they were backed by so much money. Grapes of Wrath survived and thrived via their natural talent. Someone, please, tell me the name of a modern band who can make this claim.

had a very REM vibe to it. that whole folk wave thing in the mid 80s. Again, a really classic canadian band that did not get anywhere near the exposure that they so richly deserved.
