  • Luke McQueary was Don Kelley's final guitarist in his long line of amazing players. Today we sit down and talk about his beginnings and the importance of Don's tutelage in his progression as a musician and performer. Though Don Kelley is now retired, the tradition lives on with Kelley's Heroes Wednesday through Saturday, 6:30 -10:30 PM at Robert's Western World. Luke also shows off his rig which includes a specially ordered Custom Shop Telecaster Thinline, vintage Deluxe Reverb, and a small pedalboard.

Saw Luke with Kelley's Heroes this week for the first time totally totally blown away. Absolutely amazing player/performer. He has a bright and brilliant future. And to see on this interview that he is a very kind, humble person makes him even more of a treasure

If more young folks had Luke's sense of humility and his drive toward excellence at something useful the world would be so much better of a place. I'm 66 years old and this young man inspires me to do better.

This is great! I liked the part about the dedication, the obsession, going into details, being like a gold digger. I always expect this kind of information about practicing from musicians but not that many give it. Thank you for this interview and all the others!

If you’re in Nashville, do yourself a solid and check his band out at Robert’s W-Sat 6 or 630-10pm. I’m lucky to live in Nashville and see this kind of talent. What a player!

The cat is cool. There's a clip of Luke playing Guitars Cadillacs and just the way he's looking around and moving just has kind of a vintage old timey vibe to it, like if today's level of chops was transported to a late 50s TV broadcast. He seems the most "classic" where other great players of late choose more of a modernized image for their instagrams, which is fine too. Kinda makes him seem reincarnated or something, or maybe he's a time traveller.

Outstanding interview. I had the pleasure of witnessing a true generational talent in Luke and his bandmates in Kelley's Heroes three nights in a row at Robert's and I can say without question he is one of the true artisans of the craft.

The more you interview Nashville guitar players the more I want to move there to hear them and learn from them. Such a great group of musicians and Luke is certainly one of those. Humble, down-to-earth, and so respectful and grateful. We should all take a lesson from that. Thank you Zac for bringing all of these players into our homes and lives. It means more than I can express. I wish Luke all the best and know that with his attitude and skill he will continue to get better and better. The sky is the limit!

Zac, once again you knocked it outta the park my friend. I’ve been watching this young man for a while now and he never ceases to amaze me with his pickin’. To find out that he’s such a respectful and down to earth fella just makes me dig his playing even more. His mom and dad sure raised him right. I’ll be making a trip down soon just to watch him play. Fantastic!!!

Ok ! I live in Russell Springs ky. Wich is one town over from Liberty ky! Luke and his Dad played a customer appreciation event at the company I worked for wich was Jones Exteriors!!! Around 2015 and Terry Wariner who is the brother of the great Steve Wariner played drums and sang!! Luke was just a youngster at the time , but already had some good chops! And his dad Scott was an awesome entertainer also. His grandfather is Audie McQuery also a great Steel guitar player.. him and my dad are good friends

I love the casual drop of AmazingSlowDowner here. I can't tell you how many solos I've transcribed thanks to that thing - especially instruments that aren't guitar like horns, where you ear just doesn't latch on as well. It's invaluable and with enough patience, it's the best ear training you can get. Can't find tabs? Great. Time to hunker down and get that ear going. I swear, once you have a certain amount of technique down, it's your ear that will hold you back if you haven't put the time into transcribing stuff you wanna know.

I wish he would have explained theory more. Im confused on his substitutions, he's saying a five minor over a one...isnt that just dorian? The two over a four could be many things depending on what you're calling the one chord.
