You dont know that paul harvey. People do things they thought theyd never do when danger happens. Survival instincts kick in. You dont think about the future but the present danger. Seen self sacrificing strangers save children without a second hesitation, like me.
My worst fear is being eaten alive, bears like hyneas eat you while you are alive through your stomach or backend..Nightmare fuel!
But i jumped between a charging black bear and a 3 yr old without my side arm, only knife in my hand because i was cooking. Picked him up like a football and ran towards my truck, where my shotgun was laying on tailgate. My son dropped him 10ft away from me & terrified precious boy. I put boy on the tailgate and shot one more time for safe measure Over muscle twitching but my son killed him instantly.
That child was from different camp, Whos urbanite parents thought it was safe for him to wonder off. Thank god my son countered my reaction & had a accurate shot. I just reacted, i didnt know him but I went in momma bear protecting baby mode on a male bear during hyperphagia. Not one day goes by do i regret that decision.
Now i get to know campers around me& educate them. I have a dog who's a predator deterrent and my side arm never leaves my side! So better to over prepare than put yourself in harms way! But you never know your capabilities until its needed!

This is typically only true if they have little to no experience with people. They’re not as timid as once would expect, and I say this as someone from BC with multiple black bear encounters. There’s a huge issue with black bears becoming accustomed to people and all that comes with us. Believe it or not, but in Canada black bears are actually responsible for around 70% of all incidents. Although their attacks are typically defensive rather than predatory. Grizzles do make up for the largest amount of fatal attacks but at the end of the day never underestimate a black bear. Due to being more skittish by nature they’re easier to spook into a defensive attack.

    • @mrdark9916
      @mrdark9916 21 день назад

@@kaelinn510actually you have that backwards.. black bear attacks are actually much more likely to be predatory in nature, while Grizzly attacks are majority defensive.
This is why you play dead for grizzly, and not for black bear. Because if a black bear is attacking you it is likely actively intending to eat you and playing dead will not help, while playing dead is often effective in the end for a grizzly attack.
So its kind of a catch-22.

@@mrsinkzn I think your anger is a bit misguided. We are all upset at what happened and of course we feel sympathy towards the victims, but to wish that all bears were extinct is ridiculous. We are encroaching on their territory, interfering with their environment, and depriving them of their natural food sources. What happened there is unfortunate, but it is also preventable. The bears have no malice, they are just doing what bears do. Mothers protect their babies and starving bears look for food. That doesn't make them evil, it just makes them wild animals. The only ones that actually have evil motives are humans. Don't get me wrong, if a bear is threatening people it needs to go down, but for you to want to exterminate all bears is not only misguided, it's moronic and I'd also say malicious.

If someone decides to go camping in known bear country, then the responsibility falls on the camper to do the proper research of the species of bear there. It is wrong to hate an animal. You don’t think, we as humans, are not directly responsible for these terrible encounters ? Humans need to remember that if you go into the bush , then it is us who have to remember we are not the only predators.

My bust bud is from Billings Montana and over the years would take me and our friends on trips throughout Montana. He carried a Desert Eagle 50 cal handgun wherever we all went, and we all kind of poked fun at him for always lugging this hand cannon all over the place. After watching this, I think I'll call Kevin and thank him for always carrying that dang gun around with him. As a dad, that first story was absolutely terrifying. HUGE respect for the dad for continuing to put himself between the bear and his daughter.

I know, WTF! Your buddy is going to get malt to death if you don't take a shot. Might as well take a chance because he's going to die for sure if you don't. Besides, you have a huge grizzly bear and your friend is on the ground, you have a hunting rifle with a scope, not that you need the scope of that range. So, why can't you shoot again? How bad of a shot do you have to be if you are worried about hitting him? I know things happen fast and the adrenaline is flowing. I know I'm second-guessing and I wasn't there, so I realize it's not as easy as I make it sound, but still it seems like he should have taken at least one shot while his friend was getting mauled

Here's one more, the guy could keep getting mauled so badly and still live. Imagine living with no eyes, ears and half your brain. Is that a better place? Fortunately for them, it all worked out, but they were extremely lucky because most of the time it doesn't go that way

James O'Brien -- saw a vid of a bear charging a man. He shot the thing close range near the head/shoulder area with a friggin shot gun. The bear tripped for just a split second before running off.
The man went out expecting to see a dead bear on the ground some distance away, but found nothing. No blood trail either.
My point is a shotgun will work, and I’m sure a rifle as well, but probably not a hand gun unless it’s essentially a mini rifle. Lol

This production actually terrified me. I have so much respect for those who have gone on after these attacks. The would be rescuers were beyond brave.
We get black bears that come and forage in the city where I live. The landscape abuts huge national forests, and it's not a very concentrated place in terms of development. I know a person who was tracked by an adult bear when she went to her car at dusk to get work she needed to do while at home. Fortunately, she returned indoors safely and was oblivious to her stalker - until her partner and she saw the bear and their respective tracks in the 1" of snow outside the windows! The bear left on its own - nothing to snack on, I suppose. While their house was somewhat isolated, it was in the city limits on a nice, quiet, wooded lot.
The number of close encounters with apex predators is increasing as people crowd animals' natural habitats. Being "bear aware" is important in most western states (and elsewhere, I'm sure). Then there are the mountain lions, coyotes, etc. KNOW what to do; it may be your only defense.
