My step father was a union welder/pipefitter. Through him I learned the good and bad about unions and it was 90% good. But the right tries to seize on the 10%. An example - Frank taught me the trade, though I did not think I wanted to make a living of it, but he also told me that when I was 19 and out of work, he knew a guy down in Tennessee who could get me a journeyman's card for $2,000. He told me he would pay for it because he thought I was better than most journeymen - I basically had a five year apprenticeship under him. But that was unfair, and I did not do it. But his good Union wages and benefits took us from the edge of poverty to a decent life, and even today, when he has been dead for 16 years, I am benefiting. He took a smaller pension to give my mom a survivor benefit and I did not find out until mom died in 2020, that she took an option to take less and provide a survivor benefit for me. I am 63 years old and I get $243/mo. from Frank's pension. I never thought I would need it, but some bad times hit, and now it gives me a lot of extra security.
