The actor playing Pablo Escobar is New Zealander Cliff Curtis! He is of Maori decent but has played so many ethnicities in Hollywood. He has played a Mexican gangster in Training Day and an Iraqi father in Three Kings. Very underrated acting skills.

Definitely Hollywood taking some dramatic license. I can't say for certain, but somehow I doubt Escobar was a businessman who also exported coffee and bananas, and only a passing interest in cocaine. Funny that part of Pablo Escobar is played by Cliff Curtis, a New Zealander with Maori physical features. Taller than Pablo in real life and with darker skin. Talk about bad casting! Don't get me wrong, Curtis did quite well, and is a fine actor. But, couldn't they pick a Latino for the part?
He also played an FBI agent in Live Free or Die Hard, but he has such a commanding screen presence as Pablo. It was hard to get into Narcos because II kept seeing Cliff in the role of Pablo...
