You can't have the success Bill had without inevitable downfall. They didn't just win because they had Brady, they made shrewd FA decisions on the cheap, found great trade deals for players a year early (I still remember Branch being good for Seattle for like half a season) and changed the way they played to stay ahead of the pack on offense and defense despite his front office and coaching staff constantly being pilfered by the league. When other teams were wringing their hands on how to get more out of star players to carry their organizations, Bills teams found ways to make his lesser players buy in to the team mentality and take on roles to help them win (Troy Brown and Edelman as DB's, Vrabel on offense). I saw the same thing happen with Tom Landry, eventually luck doesn't keep going your way any draft miss becomes magnified you take on too much of the responsibility for too long and every team in your division thats gunning for you eventually improves. I don't have to like Bill to say that, I respect him as a football fan enough to know you don't just win as much as he had in New England because of a QB. Mayo has a helluva wall to climb, let alone anyone who follows him. I hope Bill enjoys a retirement, he's offered the game so much beyond just the Patriots organization.

The best BB could have done was make Hardegree OC. Scar leaves 2020, Fisch 2021 (QBs). I don't know why Judge was a bad idea. There was so much churn on the offensive coaching staff. Once again, Brockman proves that he's little more than a hot take machine. The "biggest mistake" in Belichick's career was how he treated Mac Jones in year two?!? REALLY?!?!? It wasn't his sustained campaign to drive Brady out of town dating back at least to the drafting Jimmy Garoppolo all of which culminated in one of the best players in history getting so sick of it that walked away with good football left in him and and won a super bowl with a different team?!?! Are you sure? It wasn't not supporting Brady in the back half of his career with better talent on offense to make the most of his time and talent?!?!? And this is supposed to be Brockman's team so one might reasonably expect that he knows more about it than the others. That doesn't bode well now does it. And now his line is "Mac Jones was a good player"?!?!? I guess he's forgotten all the times he banged the table and railed against the Patriots for not benching him. Turns out even Chris Brockman doesn't even pay any attention to what Chris Brockman has to say. With good reason.

That title should end with ", Again." ... The whole organization has been doing as much. ... And it starts with the Kraft's.
It's gross & embarrassing. .... Think they themselves believe that the majority of the fans feel that way about Mr. Belichick because of our local media (T. Curran, Boston Sports Tonight, & the Felger & Mazz radio/TV show.
Living in Massachusetts myself, I don't here the same sediments from others as portrayed from those outlets.
Mayo is best to leave it all alone, IMO. ... He's not exactly off to a great start himself. Saying they're going to FINALLY spend & then they don't? ... Mighta helped if we signed a better veteran QB & still had an established head coach, no??
.. We just want a fresh start at this point & bad talking anybody from the teams past helps absolutely nothing.
He probably should keep in mind that Belichick did what he did with being constantly way under the cap & realizing what that he's about to do the same without any experience as a head coach or even an officially titled coordinator.
    ....
Last year it was over before it started due to having to play Jones who was never going to be a solid pro. ... Funny how the season beforehand was all Bill and nothing to do with Jones living on the media driven excuses instead of not taking the coaching he was given. ... Meanwhile, Zappe who's a total nobody did & it showed. ... Fans simply felt better when he played.
Anyhow, I'll digress. ... Can go on all day about this whole deal.
I do wish T. Curran's former Quick Slant co-host Jarod Mayo all the best. ... I'm sure he'll at least have plenty of local media driven leeway & support. .... Actually 🤔, you guys know Tommy C, right? 🙄

Some QBS are mechanical in their ability to fully adapt to a changing environment (Mac Jones). To roll with the punches so to speak. Some have a natural ability like Tom Brady. Belichik was 5-13 with Bledsoe then Brady stepped in and went 14-3 the rest of the year. Same team. The Patriots became predictable and defenses started blitzing Mac alot and he couldn't get the ball out or escape. I think behind the scenes Robert Kraft meddled with the Garoppolo situation and he meddled with the Mac Jones situation. Belichik was a lame duck coach and he said ..ok..you want Mac..you got him!!!! For all the world to see. Mac didn't have the strong leader personality like Tommy and he didn't have the support he needed to be successful. You can have all the measurables and all the success in college but in the NFL it's what's between the ears that makes the great ones great. You have to be able to adapt. You have to roll with the punches. Tom was the best. Mac was a field mouse.

The only way to get big names to go to your team when you are rebuilding is by vastly overspending. Let teams like Washington overspend on guys just to continue winning 4-7 games while you bring in a ton of young talent in year 1. Grab a mid round QB to sit behind Brissett and trade out of 3 to build those lines and get some skill position depth so if you take a QB high in year 2 they won't be coming into a bad roster. Bill was notoriously cheap and relied heavily on Brady turning lesser talented guys into stars on offense. Jones had a solid rookie season but watched as Bill brought in trash and continued to waste picks on offensive guys he was never going to use. That's why the team sank without a HoF QB lifting the offense out of the gutter.

Mayo did slip up with the "burning money" comment, but there was some guile with the "important position" comment. As I recall, he said the Pats would draft a player at "AN important position" not "THE MOST important position." The media just jumped on that and assumed he meant QB (and, in reality, they probably will draft a QB), but there are multiple important positions while QB is the most important.
With Ridley taking a 4 year deal, I have a little more understanding for passing him up. Missing out on Tyron Smith was frustrating though because he only wanted 1 year. You need to put some talent on offense around a young QB to help him develop and you can't draft a whole offense on April 25-27.

The whole thing with Jones was BB showing his weird loyalty to his failed coaching buddies, Judge and Patricia, giving them jobs after they got fired elsewhere when they failed as head coaches. Mac Jones voiced his displeasure at having an DC and a Special teams coordinator acting as co-OCs. In doing so Jones dissed Belichick and signed his own death warrant, given Belichick's demonstrated ego and vindictiveness.

So you were fine with them offering 22million for Ridley but 24 no way? If the plan was “ slow and steady” why go after him at all. The Patriots have to realize they are going to have to offer well above market value for quality FAs. Shitty facilities, unknown coaching staff , crappy weather. And a lousy team. They are going to have to pay a suck tax.

Everyone overreacts to the Patricia times. Yes it ruined Mac's development. But what was Bill suppose to do? He wanted to put someone he trusted in charge of the offense, and he ran out of people. Ernie Adams, Dante Scarnecchia, and Ivan Fears all retired, and McDaniels got poached. So when he had the opportunity to put people he trusted in the role, he did. Unfortunately they were not very good at it, and Mac's downfall + the wasted 2022 draft class because of a scheme change + extremely unlucky injuries at key position made 2023 Pats a joke

Bill is at fault for growing tired of coaching and developing new coaches on his staff as he got older. He kept turning to coaches he knew who already worked for him. He had no viable candidates in his circle to be OC and QB coach when McDaniels left yet still preferred the Patricia and Judge duo over hiring and working with an offensive coach from the outside. It seems like his personal relationship with Mac didn't sour until that 2nd year since Bill praised Mac for having a good camp and offseason before that season.
