The water fills in through the side holes for the skewer. You can avoid this by adding short plastic tubes (isolated with glue) to the holes just a little wider than the skewer and stuffing some vaseline inside. The skewer will still turn but vaseline will add insulation. Tried it, works great.
Put the bottom cross braces inside for less resistance to forward movement.the holes for the axle are your leaks . grease an additional skewer and install it temporarily. Use your glue gun to create bushings for the axle. Spin gently while cooling off. Install paddle wheel. It might not be perfect, but probably better than none.
Just watching this guy making it is satisfying. But being able to make it is immensely fulfilling. Edit: using more than enough strengthening and too much glue might increase the weight, so maybe we can try to minimise all of it.
I believe if you were to misalign the paddles at a 45° angle it would make it go faster/farther making it more efficient. With all do respect there is nothing wrong with what you made, I'm looking at it as if it's a boat made by a toy company not a project that anyone could do.
for more speed... cut down your original paddles... and use the off cuts glued on at 90 degrees to the smaller paddles.... less drag, faster paddle speed with a larger surface area as well as setting the paddles at different angles to each other.... so that you get a smoother operation... as you only have four blades on each side ... otherwise boat is amazing :) well done
I was about to say when you put the bottom together that you should glue between them as well... but you learned that lesson later I see lol.... You could've raise the sides true, or drilled the holes a cm more towards the center... in any case a child would love it, especially if grandma/grandpa/mom/dad and him/her each made one.
I think maybe it’s the weight of the paddles weighing it down at the back enough to take on water over the sides. Maybe if the paddles were closer to the middle it would ease the issue. Also maybe if you could find something to fill the bottle caps with that was lighter than glue gun glue, which is quite heavy in a lump like that. Air dry foam clay might work as the right kind can be very light. Maybe use a small amount of glue to stick the wood together and then fill around it in the bottle caps with the clay to reinforce it.
Great video. I made one with my 8 year old boy for a school project. Didn't bother with the rotors. Just a boat and put a wee sail on it. However after putting it in water it all fell apart I used a glue gun and craft sticks bought from Amazon. The problem seemed to be the carft sticks all buckled and bowed and weren't water resistant. So something to look out for if you plan to build one.
Super cool. I'm going to make one with my nephew. I might try out using the old wooden ship keel and skeleton with molded planks method. I wonder if I steam the craft sticks if I can get them to hold the shape I need. Be interesting. Thanks for the vid
The wood soaks up water made the boat kinda heavier and sinking a little bit which made the water easily get in......probably coating the outside of the boat with water repellent material could prevent the wood from soaking up water and that gonna let the back side to float better
Is this a wind-up?
DaveHax yes

Cool idea . U can glue the band to the stick ,in that way it doesn't get ditched from stick after a complete spin.
The music, his accent, and the occasional “pretty cool huh?” will never get old.

Its way better to make the axle a little bit higher, its at the water level, thats why the water gets into the boat.
Try putting a slice of cork under the rear part of boat.
Do you come up with these yourself? They are very creative!
Or you could say it's *Pretty Cool Huh?*

To stop water from getting in you can hot glue an even layer of foil onto it! I think... unless the back is still too heavy.

Maybe the holes where the stick is are a factor as well?
you forgot to tell us to use hot glue to avoid the boat from sinking 9:16
Always wanted to do that! Yup, that's pretty cool!
The boat looks good 💯 but I will do it in my way to make it easy 😊
Yes! Thank you! Very helpful!
It looks much better than the last paddle boat you made
This is the only channel I can think of where I don't roll my eyes when the glue gun gets pulled out.

Tape the bottom, tape is water resistant. Put the tape under the boat. And maybe add some in the sides. Hope this helps!
Very good idea, no tiene el problema de las hélices que pueden atascarse en aguas sucias . Estaría bueno hacerlo electrico .
Dave Hax never fails to amaze us

Bestest boat of the world
Wow we tried this and it was awesome!
Thankyou!
Much better when you make some people in the boat
Sencillo, limpio y funcional, muy bueno.
yay a new video but u could add some weight to the front of it so its pefectly balanced and wouldnt take in water

this is a very good project for kids . i made this and put it in the pool and went under water with a gopro to film it moving.

Ruber band mechanism can be replace by mini motor which is propelled by light weight battery
How much glue are you gonna use?
DaveHax: Yes
Today we did this for our 3.5 yo son, so happy he is to make something which can move without an engine :-)
If u wouldn't line up the panels the boat would do a zigzag in the water
Who remembers back when Dave made a pop-pop boat using a candle, milk carton and soda can

I have this wierd feeling you've already made this 😃
This is so cool, you're very creative sir! Love this so much! 😉
Right.
You could say it's pretty cool huh?
I think the paddles should have been place closer to the centre, so it wouldn't sink down lower than the top of the boat ⛵
