    Thank you! Don't forget to have your external drive as GPT beforehand! (From windows go into diskpart, clean the disk, then convert gpt

    Hopefully this can help someone; when using rufus, if you are trying it with a hard drive, even one connected via USB, you must press ALT + F to get it to show them.

    Hey one inconvenince. When I disconnect the hard drive with ubuntu in it and start the computer it shows a gnu grub screen. I can get into windows if when booting I manually select windows but can I do something to make the computer automatically boot into windows when the hard drive is disconnected?

    Thank you so much! I tried tutorials from other guys and met some annoying problems. And all these problem can be avoided by following your video with a usb and another external ssd. I have struggled a lot figuring out why I always had an error saying cannot unmount cdrom, but after using your solution everything goes smoothly! Really thanks!!!

    Thank you for the video. Just what I've been looking for. One thing from your video. If the external HD is empty do you have to delete the partition and then recreate it again or will the Ubuntu installer do this for me?? Thanx in advance.. You got another sub :-)

      Select Erase disk and install Ubuntu on the external hdd
      You don't need to create partitions manually
      Everything will be done automatically

    After I do the partioning of / which is root partition, and then I click on install, ubuntu says me to add EFI partition, but my PC is mbr, what to do?

      i think you are screwed there, as there is no way to change a BIOS type. if you do, the computer will brick itself.

    Thanks for sharing this. It really helped. Now I have completed my work in ubuntu and need to format external ubuntu hard disk to use it as normal hard disk. When I am plugging this in Windows laptop window is not detecting the hard disk.
    How can I format hard disk to make it again a normal hard disk

      I know your problem
      Go to disk management instead of File Explorer from Windows
      From there you can delete the Ubuntu system partitions and create new one

    Hello. I have installed an SSD as my main drive, and moved the HDD into the optical drive bay. So now I want to install Ubuntu into my HDD at the Optical drive bay. Every time I attempt to do it, an error occurs and ubuntu does not load from my HDD. can you suggest a solution?

    I did this today and wiped out my HDD. I used written directions. I came here and see that I did it exactly right, and yet it overwrote my HDD. Wrote it on the removable drive too, but no. I watched very carefully hoping I'd see something I missed or got wrong.

    In the root partition will the Ubuntu just occupy 50gb out of the 500gb or it will occupy the whole disk once installed

    Hello good sir. I already complete everything u teach in this vid. One problem is after succesfull installation, instead of booting to ubuntu my laptop pass through booting straight to windows without anyway to choose boot to ubuntu that I just installed. Any sugestion on how to solve that? Any answer will be appreciated. Thx

      Yes this should work, you can use windows built-in tool to burn the iso, just right click the iso and click burn

      Yeah same problem Ubuntu changes the boot on main drive sadly even when u choose external drive as boot device

    Sadly, I'm having a serious issue when booting without the external disk plugged... It shows a "terminal-like" window of Grub, and there is not any chance to boot windows... Do you know why? I don't even know where to look for help
    Windows boots normally if the external disk is plugged and i select it, in fact I have the opportunity to choose ubuntu or windows. But with the disk unplugged I only have that grub window and can't do anything... Thanks in advance!!
    As in the video, I have windows on internal disk and ubuntu on external

      From bios setting go to boot menu and select windows boot manager as boot device(or in 1st priority), when external drive is unplugged

      Please correct me if I’m wrong:
      If you install the Ubuntu distro on to an external drive successfully and are using it and then remove it without shutting down then you run the risk of corrupting part(s) of it.
      If you’re booting to Ubuntu but want to switch back to Windows I believe you have to restart your computer and, this is the part I’m unsure of, it’ll automatically boot to the native OS of your computer. If it doesn’t, just go back to the boot screen in your BIOS and select the internal drive where your OS is installed at (or other external drive if you have several externally installed OS’s) and choose it then boot

      Not necessary to be empty
      Or you can create some free space by deleting or shrinking down a partition (around 50gbfree space) to install ubuntu in it

      Same issue it does add an entry to boot on main drive not external drive. But the workaround is changing boot sequence to windows as main

I have one problem though.. my computer stops after I choose *ubuntu (4:29 from your video) and would not boot ubuntu that I have installed on my usb. Could you suggest any solutions?       It's recommended to use a better usb drive or a hdd , instead of old usb 2.0

    I was reading some blogs and they said that I need to unplug my internal HD and SSD beforehand so I can boot the ubuntu on an external HD
    Do I really have to do that? (I have a pc with both internal HD and SSD)

      Check from bios the boot order. Your machine attempts to boot in the order specified there. If you installed a new os on the external drive but the internal drives are higher in the list and have an os installed, that os(on the internal drive) will be loaded up.
