- A quick guide to upgrading the Dell Optiplex 3070 Micro PC with an M.2 NVMe SSD (Intel 660p 1TB: amzn.to/2SNzUTY) and an additional 8GB DDR4-2666 (amzn.to/35g1dJ6).
This is a very simple task, which only requires a small Phillips screwdriver for fitting the SSD.
This guide also applies to the previous generation Dell Optiplex 3060 Micro which shares the same chassis design.
Great video, its rare to find a video that actually explains what you were looking for.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you!! It‘s so simple but without the video I did not find how to change the hard disk. Best regards.
Glad it helped!
@@BrueComputing Hi. As a couple of other people have pointed out long ago, you are actually improperly installing the NVMe drive in this video, attaching it directly onto the motherboard with the standoff instead of attaching it _to_ the standoff with an M.2 screw.
I blindly followed your directions to install a double-sided M.2 drive despite how wrong it felt, because the standoff did look a lot more like a screw than a standoff, and I was in a rush, and surely the guy in the video knows what he's doing. I was wrong. The drive failed in a matter of minutes and, though I have no certainty, I do suspect it shorted on the mobo because of the way it was mounted.
It's really nice of you to make videos like these in an effort to help others, but you should absolutely take this one down ASAP because you are giving incorrect and probably dangerous instructions.
Thanks man! So funny how little thing can be giving headache. I just wanna change the ram and slide it in and was pushing so it could click but it won’t. I didn’t know I need to insert it from the top and then push down. Great video!
Remarkably straightforward video. Much appreciated. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
You installed the M.2 drive under the standoff. It belongs on top of the standoff held down by the screw that should have come in the drives package.
Bingo, making a video doesn't make you an expert. I see this stuff all the time on youtube.
Thanks for the walkthrough, shortly (less than a month maybe) I’m making a video on how to make an all in one
Sounds great! I fitted this one on an official mount to a Dell monitor and works very nicely.
Thanks for the video. I was able to install a SATA SSD as a secondary drive and insert 32GB RAM into the machine.
Glad I could help
can also confirm 32gb working in this machine
Do the new models (3080/3090) that came with SSD from factory also include an empty blue 2.5" drive sled?
Can you please tell the exact model or type of 32gb ram. You put?
Very pretty machine
Very!
thanks bro
No problem
thank you so much your tutorial easy to follow. In my system (corei3 12gen) have to remove the speaker before can add dram.
Info really helpful. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
should do a full build, im wanting to try and use one with a gpu for when im in the military, would like something small but not a laptop
Thank you very much.
Welcome 😊
Can any sdd drive fit or it has to be certain one? Because im having issues using a deleted ssd drive from another computer
Happy new year!
If I buy this with Windows pre-installed, how would I transfer the Windows install from the HD to the SSD?
I have the same question
@@citrus_bat reinstall windows it should activate again if it is a pre-built
Did this last week. Look up videos on Macrium Reflect. A key thing is checking the partition settings in Macrium when cloning the existing HDD to the SSD to make sure the SSD partitions take up the entire SSD. Try this: ruclips.net/video/CTiPVR6szCA/видео.html
Hey.. If I go with ubuntu version later I want to install pirated windows ..and add m.2 SSD and RAM by myself
Or there is any specific type of DDR4 and m.2 SSD only suported on this.
would it impact warranty process?
Please reply. I am going to purchase this one.
Hello James. Thanks for your walkthrough video. Could you please tell me what kind of M.2 SSD Thermal pad I should use?
Useful video! Appreciate it.
Does the hard drive bay come preinstalled if i buy the ssd only version or do i have to buy the hdd bay seperataly if i want to add an hdd in the future?
Oh no! You can not mount nvme ssd as shown by the author! For fastening, a 2.5mm screw is used, which is screwed directly into the screw that secures the motherboard to the case. If you do not have such a screw, it can be purchased through the Dell service.
Vou fazer um curso de inglês o mais rápido possível.🇧🇷
Do you have to reinstall Windows when upgrading to the M.2 Drive ?
What is the blue plastic hdd holder thing called? And where could I buy one?
thank you for the video. can I put both ssd M2 + ssd sata on my 7040 micro?
A little more info on the type ssd and the ram would be helpful.
can we add 8gb ddr4 2400mhz? as system only supports 2400mhz speed
After install the sata ssd, do i need to enable or something? Its not detected..
I have a 3050 Micro and I'm trying to install a new WLAN card and antenna, but I can't figure out where the black cable goes, aside from one end connecting to the card that is.
There's another slot next to the m2. A smaller one. Can you tell me what that is?
Basically, i could add a m2 nvme and a sata hdd, right?
My one has wifi on that slot
Thank you
You're welcome!
What cpu it has and temperatures in idle please ? Waiting for answer.
Will i loose ms office after installing nvme ssd because i have sata
Great video, 👍 is there a recent dell micro series with similar specs i7, 2.5" drive, at least 32gb ram and a PCIe 8x slot on the motherboard like the Lenovo tiny so that user can add a Ethernet card adapter with more than one port?
good videio. got it :) the pc is wonderful :D
Enjoy it
Hey if I change the case of it . Can I change the motherboard?
What graphics card should I upgrade to in my optiplex if I want it to be able to run a game like HOI4 smoothly?
Hi can you tell me please how quiet is the Dell Optiplex 3070 Micro PC, it is silent .. if it is very quiet in the room something is heard? Thanks!
It's dead silent. They always are.
Not a peep....I work on Saturdays by myself sometimes and no sound at all....
can i install a m.2 sata ssd?
here's the model SA400M8/240G... i found some specs but nothing about the compatibility...
Is there any slot to add video card adapter? Thanks
did the pcie nvme support x4 ?
Can you share the ram link attached in the video how many mhz?
8GB DDR4-2666 - amzn.to/35g1dJ6
Hi there. I already have an optiplex 3070 with a 256gb SSD, i'd like to put up other 256gb SSD . Is it just a plug n play or i´d have to do something else? Thank you.
Hey .. can I add m.2 SSD and additional ram lby myself . Should it impact the Dell warranty . Any idea ??
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think the only way to add another SSD would be to buy a regular sized one and fit it in the drive holder on top of the other SSD
As long as your SATA bay (the light colored bracket) is empty, you can put a SATA SSD into your computer and keep your NVM-e drive at the same time.
With a 8gb pre-installed and having in mind another 8gb upgrade. Should I go for dual or single rank?
We added a single rank module, as per the link in the description.
@@BrueComputing I don't know if there is benefit on the 2R . I will go with the single as it is cheaper. Thanks for the video and the response. Kudos to you and the channel.
Thanks, could you do one on the data migration from hdd to ssd?
Video here showing it: ruclips.net/video/JV43dmhsQS4/видео.html
Great video! Can you do a video how to add a HDMI port. Mine came with a blank slot (optional HDMI, VGA) I believe you can remove the blank pre cut slot. Thanks
If there is no output on the board then you'd have to solder the connector of, assuming it has the silkscreening for them on the board. Not something I can help with as this one had them anyway.
Brue Computing thanks for your reply. Mine is the model optiplex 7070 micro. Which didn’t came with any hdmi. It only said on the description ‘optional HDMI, VGA, DV Port. It has the pre cut for the connector. But it only has 6usb, 2 DV port. I believe I can install HDMI hardware connector but I don’t know how to do that.

I have the 3050 and tried to put 2x 16gb identical sticks for 32gb ram max but it shows an amber power led and won’t boot, not even post. Any ideas on what I could try to get them to work please?
What is your CPU and are the RAM slots DDR4?
Would it work if i add 8gb RAM 2400hz with 4gb ram 2400 which is already inside? Should i get 12gb of RAM or only 8gb RAM will work?
Should work fine.
Gosh 84.00 for the hard drive!? the external drives usb are 50.00. Should I just do that? sorry I'm a noob
can this this be use 24/7 none stop?
Can't think of any reason why not.
Thanks . For the RAM is there different type like one for pc and other for laptop? Which shld i choose?
Yes
Hi, does it not come with a built wifi card? If i want to buy one (wifi card) what is the description of the card.
Mine came with a Qualcomm Atheros 802.11ac WiFi card built in, and it came with a small antenna/aerial that can be screwed into a jack on the rear of the machine.
Does it work any brand m.2 SATA SSD?
What’s the RAM type for OptiPlex 3040 i3 6th Gen?
I know what dell website says but do we know if the limitation of the motherboard is preventing 64gb ram? I prefer 2x 32gb sodimm.
This page suggests 32GB modules will work: www.dell.com/community/Optiplex-Desktops/64gb-of-RAM-in-Micro-7060-7070/td-p/7551644
But not something I've tested.
I’m a noob to computers, I just bought the dell optiplex I3 3rd gen in ultra small form factor. What SSD are compatible? Do they need to be a specific size?
2.5
hi guys, i have the exact same PC's and would like to upgrade to SSD to try and speed them up a little, do i just follow this step by step? do i leave the HDD in afterwards like you have?
I left the hard drive in but erased it and clean installed Windows 10 on to the SSD.
Is it also possible to upgrade its graphic card?
No, it uses integrated graphics in the processor.
@@BrueComputing it is, it have m2 slot but I don't know what speed. Still faster than thunderbolt. So you can use that slot for eGPU
Amazing and full detailed video, GPU Upgrade next please.
How much psuwatt? Does it hav
no need twist out the screw, there is a screw hole on screw head。
Hi, how many ram slots does 3070 have? Did you just add another second 4Gb ram?
2. Yes I added a second DIMM module.
@@BrueComputing Thnx to your video, so did I.
Can we add graphics card on it 🤔🤔
Not really. You could possibly have an external enclosure hacked together using the M.2 slot but a different system would probably be more cost effective.
@@BrueComputing thank you for informing 🙃🙃🙃🙃
do you have one where it’s a normal 3070 and you upgrade the gpu? if not, can someone tell me what gpu’s fit inside the normal 3070?
No GPU can fit in this machine, there isn't even a PCIe Connection point on the Motherboard. Your best bet is to find a compatible CPU with a decent iGPU but even then you won't be playing games at max settings
Hi can someone answer my question please. I just need to know if the processor on this unit is the same as desktop processor or its the same as those on laptops?
They use a low power (35W) desktop part.
@@BrueComputing thank you for answering, Last question low power (35W)processor is it going to work with a 9th gen gigabyte mother board? need ur help coz I have a defective unit same as the one u have and am planning to use the processor on a pc that I will build for gaming.
are those laptop rams ?
Yes.
Apple, take note, the Mac Mini's should be like this.
They aren't interested in their products being user serviceable or upgradeable.
Does this computer support NVMe SSD?
Yes, I fitted an Intel 660p drive, which is NVMe.
How we can attach graphics card on thia system
You can't. There's no space or connector on the board and no Thunderbolt for an external.
postion M2 SSD below HDD very hot (65-90 deegre C). For a long time all chipset & HDD will broken with small space.
what type m.2 ssd for this mini pc dude?
Hard drive could be hackintosh
can I put a graphics card in it ??
No.
TPM Yes ya not
will it work with m.2 sata 2280?
That's what he just installed. Incorrectly. It actually sits on top of the standoff, not under, but I digress.
It will actually take 2280 or 2240 and either standard SATA or NVMe.
@@JamesWoodard1222 Mine didn't come with the proper standoff screw. It has to be ordered separate. (Optiplex Micro 3080)
hi, is the maximum storage of a ssd in the optiplex micro 256gb or may it also be 1TB?
you can switch the 256 one for whichever storage you want to add. You can add an additional storage by using the M2 port. And have a 1 Terabyte SSD as well.
ReptilianLaserbeam I’m a noob to computers, I bought the dell optiplex i3 3rd gen in ultra small form. What SSD are compatible with it? Do they have to be a specific size?
