The Gallaghers seem to have a stoic relationship with pain and difficult emotions, and would rather seem like simple, womanizing hooligans than who they really are. I'm sure this has something to do with their father's abuse and subsequent abandonment.
With all this in mind, it's not at all a leap to suggest that Noel lies to get away from admitting his love for other people, be it Melissa, Sara, his daughters and brothers. Watch any interview with him; he always seems to talk about them in a mocking fashion, or as with Melissa, outright lie.

    Don't Go Away
Up in the Sky (the line I heard you feel down, welcome to my world)
    Slide away
    Married with Children
Wonderwall (Noel even said, Wonderwall is more 'the end of the night, my bird just left me')
Cast no shadow (he walks along the open road of love and life, surviving if he can)
    I think, I hope, I know
    Stand By Me

They'll be plenty more I missed out, but the key thing is Noel is quite clearly a very emotional person, he hides it maybe because its not very Rock N Roll. I think younger Noel was a depressed, heartbroken young man at a time. Especially around the '94-'96 era

ANd honestly it must suck for Ms. Melissa.. not only did you save the man's band and career by providing a brief moment of clarity, you influence the hell out of a great album.. only to have the main guy just sorta ignore you.
When i was arrested in Austin Texas for Public intoxication.. i got out of the drunk tank the next day without a dime in my pocket, hung over like hell, and this was in the early years of cell phones, i didn't have one, but a buddy of mine did.. once i was out on the streets of the capital of Texas.. i headed towards corner store.. to use the pay phone.. but at that moment i remember i didn't have a penny on me.. and i saw a homeless man who was walking by.. and i asked him if i could borrow 50 cents to use the pay phone. He instead gave me 10$ dollars and said "i just saw you get out of the tank, buy yourself something to eat and call your love ones.. stay bless".. and i will never forget that moment. He didn't have to do that, and i promise ever since then when i see a homeless person i give whatever cash i have on me no hesitation. I will never forget that.

Original lyrics were “So SORRY can wait…” Liam misheard it and asked Noel “Who’s Sally?” ‘Sally’ stuck and ‘sorry’ was lost.
Interesting fit with the girlfriend break up theory - as saying sorry is always the hardest thing to do, and for Noel, it can wait cos she know’s it’s too late

  • @olympian3

Morning glory (the album) is about San Francisco I suppose in many ways?
The whole situation so much more complicated in my view. The public eye and industry is complicated and he definitely feels he can’t tell the truth of the matter. If he still cared he wouldn’t want to bring her into that world anyways.
She definitely got him back together and whatever she did is probably still keeping him together.
Remember, he was the one who wanted to leave the band. She was the one who wanted him to go back to the band and she knew it would mean they wouldn’t be able to be together.

I started watching your videos because you shredded all the music I grew up listening to and gave great overviews on playing it filling in gaps I’ve had on the guitar for years. When this video came up in the queue this morning I never ever expected you to fill in the gaps in my understanding of the music itself. My mind was blown today, terrific interpretation and story. Melissa’s story is one that deserves to be known given the massive influence of that time and music from Oasis. Somehow I had completely missed it until today. I hope I’ll be listening to WTSGL and MP late into my life and it will sound so much more rich because of this. Thank you James… and thank you Melissa.

After listening to the song after this video i think the whole chorus could be linked to her. When he says "she knows its too late as we're walking on by" that could be a reference to how she knows its too late for them to be in a relationship as noel has found someone else. And also when he says "don't look back in anger, i heard you say" could when referring to when she said that. Awesome video👍🏻

I’ve just discovered your channel, loving it so far. This was a really insightful video. I’ve always known the Talk Tonight backstory, but never connected that ‘lost weekend’ to anything else from Morning Glory. Excellent detective work, and thank you for always sharing your sources. Everything is a lot more believable when you know if something came from a reliable source.
I’m curious, do you think The Ballad of the Mighty I might be about her? That song has mystified me for years. It’s obvious to me that Noel still remembers her very clearly, yet doesn’t want to admit to it. He sounded like even he didn’t know what the lyrics to Mighty I were about, but I think we can agree that’s probably bullshit based on context like what you’ve provided here.
Excellent work, really getting a lot from your videos.

Once again a great vid James but I honestly think Lim is exaggerating telling Noel the look back in anger bit considering Noel was a big Bowie fan (who actually wrote Look Back In Anger). He says some lyrics were written years before so I always assumed this song was about Louise Jones (the girl he wrote Slide Away & Married With Children about).

Half the world away was written the same time as talk tonight, so that could also have some meaning about all that time with Melissa. …… “You’re half the world away” Don’t look back in anger and talk tonight are also related to her like you mentioned. It’s good to be free was also written then, “ head like a rock spinning round and round found it in a hole sitting upside down “ he wasn’t in a good head space at that time and also he mentions wanting to live by the sea which could be San Francisco.

Love the video! Always thought that it was about a girl too, but there’s another girl Noel mentions in the documentary, a girl he breaks up with after they secure their record deal with creation; he said something like “we knew then that we were over after that” so could it be him saying to her not to look back in anger as he goes off without her?

Wow. I was kind of doubtful from the title, but wow. I think this is an amazing analysis. I saw the D'ya know what I mean video as well, and I genuinely think that it's sometimes a case of where an artist will say "there's no meaning behind it"... But there really is. Noel himself says that he "doesn't know where the songs come from, I'm just fishing and when I catch something I reel it in".
While he may not be sitting there thinking "I'll write a song about X time in my life" - it's the source that he is unaware of.

Hi James, loved your work since the first time I heard you on the Oasis podcast. Keep it up.
Interesting you followed this video after the one about Noel’s dark side and how he has never acknowledged the help from the Real People in helping Oasis. His treatment of Melissa fits into this pattern as well. He seems to be unwilling or uncomfortable to admit that he ever needs musical or emotional support. Mark Coyle’s comments are spot on. He only opens up a sliver for a moment. Kinda sad he’s let that fear run his life.
On a totally different note, I’m US based and want to support you and the Oasis pod but would get killed with transaction fees if I arranged monthly subscriptions. Any chance for one time contributing to minimize my fees. Thanks!
