Ah, an original 1970s built Ruger Mini 14! A nice find. The wood on those particular rifles just overall looks better and more "handsome", than the newer rifles. Like the wood on a Gewehr 43.
It shoots .223 Remington and 5.56mm NATO (pretty much the same cartridge), same as the M16 and M4. Normally it's very easy to find and pretty inexpensive, though ammo prices have gone up some and availability has been lower due to Corona. If you're interested in one, make sure you get one with a serial number that starts with 581 or higher, as the newer Mini-14 rifles are much more accurate than the old one you see in the video here. You can tell the new rifles apart from the thicker barrel and protective ears on the front-sight, some also having a flash hider, depending on variant.
I've always been curious if this was developed in ww2. I wonder if it'll replace both the m1 carbine and m1 garand. This would have been a great service rifle in that time

It has very little recoil being chambered in .223. About the same recoil as an AR. It's extremely accurate, a very pleasurable shooting rifle :)
