This is art, not entertainment. It's not bells and whistles, big movements, dancing, engagement. It's standing before you raw, human, uncomfortable, vulnerable, small, human, yet beautiful. It's art, it's not entertainment - it's not giving the people what they want - it's confronting them with a performance that doesn't "perform" but merely exists and expresses itself the way it is. I love it. Those who do not want art but merely want to be entertained, may not like it.
It takes a lot of courage for a band to just play in such a simple understated way in order to perfectly support the singer. Letting her vulnerability and beauty shine through. God she makes it seem like this is the first time she ever performed in her life. So beautiful.

I love this music, but nobody would confuse this performance or these songs with art emanating from a healthy society. The loneliness and autism in Hope’s performance is coming from a woman born in the mid-60’s, and her performance is fraught with melancholy and a surrender to sadness. It’s amazing to watch, but not an example of an America that was doing great.
