- Sky News host Paul Murray says the “single biggest addict” to tobacco in Australia is the Federal Government as they’re set to increase taxes on tobacco by $3.3 billion.
“The media got very excited by a new toy today … they are coming for your vapes, certainly younger people this is the way to get your rocks off as opposed to, good old fashioned, traditional smoking the reality is, all of it’s bad for your health … something you shouldn’t do,” Mr Murray said.
“What they actually announced today was a $3.3 billion increase to tobacco taxes … the single biggest addict to tobacco in Australia is the Federal Government.”
If the Govt was so concerned about our health they would ban cigarettes, the reality is that the Govt is addicted to tax and getting as much of it as they can from us.

We're tax cattle to them that is all. Milking us for every drop they can.

@@skipper4126 you've bought into what they want everyone to believe it's about helping people stop no it's not it's about revenue they know with every increase a certain amount will stop but the increase means they never lose financially and there will always be a certain amount of the population that can never give up so they'll be forced into poverty, Australia's answer to everything increase price well isn't that convenient for government. Why aren't they subsidizing stop smoking aids if there that committed to helping people stop use some of the extra revenue to reduce the cost of those but no the answer is an increase and ban vaping which will drive people who moved from expensive smokes to vaping back to smoking and money back into the governments pockets

The government has already started losing significant tobacco revenue because of smokers switching to vaping. Am I a cynic in thinking that stomping on vaping will push vapers back to smoking $50 packs of cigarettes?
Which is exactly what the government wants and is trying to do.
That's the real truth behind this, they've already lost so much tax revenue to vaping and the trend is showing they'll continue to lose the entire industry if it continues..

I can see why tobacco companies didn't fight the high taxation of cigarettes, they knew the withdrawal symptoms of nicotine were so persistent that most weren't going to quit due to higher price only a total ban which wasn't going to happen by effectively cutting the government in on the profits via taxation. When so much of the cost of cigarettes goes to the government it's effectively the government who's selling them and the cigarette companies who are just subcontractors taking a small cut.

Here in Germany they did the same with tabaco tax a few years back. They were hoping to cash in on the smokers but it backfired, and they got a lot less taxes back than previous years, because so many people just stopped smoking. So they took a step back.
They're really trying to bring these laws in to make smoking less appealing and health in general better hey, just until there's a possibility they might not profit as much
Well then it did work because that's what an excise tax is about is making people give up or consume less. 10 years ago it was 18% 5 years ago 14% and now apparently 10% so this tax is doing what's it's designed to do.

@@geoffreystanton7318 I agree that it got people to quit smoking which ist a good thing (although I'm a smoker 😆), but the reason behind it was to get more money for govenment spending which failed, they had less than before raising the tax.
So 15% tax increase over 3 years.......seems inflationary to me
No tax is a percentage so that is an additional 15% on top the existing taxes and inflation
it's compounding. 5% this year, 5% of the increased price next year. works out closer to 16% over a 3 year period. (15.7+%)
Hey mate gotta ask what did you think when the libs increased the tax on smokes by 10% every year for 10 years ?
😂 no idea
The reasons I believe they haven't been able to tax vaping is two fold. Firstly, when Keating introduced the levy in 1994, parliament made the mistake of taxing tobacco, not nicotine. As mentioned, the data regarding price increases vs product sold does not support the argument that increasing prices reduces tobacco use. Secondly, the UK is encouraging vaping as a way to quit smoking and having some success; it would look bad for our government to tax a quit smoking product while raising taxes on smoking products also, it looks worse banning a quit smoking product while increasing taxes on tobacco. My question is, when does it come down to the choice of the consumer? If we followed this philosophy consistently, gym time would be mandated, there'd be massive taxes on lollies and chips, massive taxes on caffine products. The philosophy makes no sense, you ban something or tax it because it's bad for the consumer, have they not already paid the price for their choice?

Here's the truth about tobacco and vaping. I'm now an ex-tobacco smoker. I was a heavy smoker for over 40 years. Their condoned remedies and solutions for quitting are ineffective for many smokers. I found it impossible to quit smoking, and the rising cost of tobacco was of zero impact on the addiction. Heavy smokers will tell you that they'd much rather smoke than eat. My food budget went steadily down as the tobacco tax continued to rise.
Before these new announced measures, tobacco taxes were already rising regularly every six months. Nothing else mattered apart from a continuous supply of tobacco. One 50g packet of tobacco was costing around $120, and it was lasting me about two days. This was at the time I quit, about 16 months ago. It's more like $150 for 50g today. I managed to switch to vaping and cease tobacco smoking completely, and almost effortlessly, with the correct choice of vape machine and liquid, to most closely emulate tobacco smoking. Currently I can only obtain liquid nicotine for the vape liquid, by obtaining a medical prescription AND purchasing internationally!. It is already locked down and controlled, and as a consequence, expensive. It is however much less addictive than the cigarettes had proved to be. I have complete control over how much nicotine I'm vaping (making your own vape liquid is simple and easy), and there is NO urgency about getting the next vape hit, as there was about getting the next cigarette lit. Getting off vaping later (once tobacco is long gone from habit and addiction), will not be a problem.
Over half the addictive properties of commercial tobacco is from the addictive chemicals that the tobacco companies ADD to the tobacco. So that home grown and processed tobacco is under half as addictive as store bought product. It would prove MUCH easier to quit smoking if smoking the natural product. Nicotine is NOT the only addictive compound involved.
The science is clear about vaping. It's at worst about 5% as health damaging as tobacco smoking. There are only a handful of compounds in vape liquid, with the major components (VG and PG) also used and consumed in many processed "foods". Importantly, vape liquid is NOT burned, it is vaporized. There are about 7000 toxic chemicals in burnt tobacco smoke, and some of the worst of them originate from the addictive chemicals that the tobacco companies add to the tobacco. Much of the very small health risk of vaping can be easily negated by suitable choices of the flavors added to the vape liquid. For quitting tobacco smoking, tobacco flavors are preferred.
So why the global push to ban vaping? People need to understand that the tobacco corporations are not shy of playing ALL the angles. Philip Morris, the world's biggest tobacco corporation, have already spent well over one billion U.S. dollars via front organizations, funding this global push against vaping. THEY understand that vaping is a VERY SERIOUS threat to continued tobacco sales. At the same time, they are also selling vape products. Why not after all, make some money out of the threat, and use the position to also attack the independent vape companies. I suspect they are also behind the very recent focus change of vape marketing, with products aimed squarely at the youth market. These colorful and cheap (often disposable) vape products did not exist just a year or so ago.
Like all corporations, only money, profit and sales matters to the tobacco corporations. They delayed all actions against the health dangers of tobacco usage, for over 30 years!. Now they're working heavily to cancel vaping globally, to again protect their tobacco sales. Vaping offers the world the possibility to finally be completely rid of the dangerous product. So it''s so sad that again, governments such as the Australian one, are AGAIN falling hook line and sinker for their propaganda. How can they never learn from their previous mistakes?.
The recent growth of black market vape activities within Australia, is likely largely fueled by the government's introduction about a year ago, of banned vape nicotine sales within Australia and the prescription requirement for international purchase. And if school children are currently playing with colorful vape toys, than THAT is in my opinion, a hell of an improvement over MY experience in school, where the same types of kids were SMOKING TOBACCO behind the sheds and at every opportunity. THAT was a time when our government CONDONED tobacco smoking as safe and harmless. Today they're doing even worse. They have a HUGE conflict of interest with their tobacco taxation, as many in the comments are pointing out. It's pure corruption.

You should also be asking what do they do with the billions in taxes from tobacco, where is it actually going........they did this in California, taxed tobacco, is was like a $4 increase within 4 years, so by 2017 a pack was $10, just as it is in New York, even on military bases (might even be more now). Yet at the same time pushed for legalizing recreational Marijuana. They claim the tax raised on tobacco was going to health programs to get you to quit and for the Healthcare industry, blah blah blah and blah........and it backfired and then they started providing places where you could get heroine, etc... What they call safe injection sites. It was simply a way for those in power to add more to their pockets because non of the tax money was used for what they claimed it would be. So ask your government what are the taxes used for and demand an accounting...... If goverment is one thing consistently it's being liars and hypocrites......

@@off-gridoutbackaustralia Aussie cigarette are the worst quality in the world, don't know how anyone can enjoy them. The only one that is even remotely enjoyable is Manitou Organic which costs $35-$40 a packet a Woolies/Coles. Uses a natural substance in the paper for FSC regulations I believe, so taste is a bit better than the chemical garbage that everything else is coated in..
@@bigchief2331 never heard Of that brand I'll give them a go if I can find them
yes, so much taxes on cigarettes and tobacco billions. always using children as the excuse. Billions from the poorest. not voluntary choice in tobacco "addiction". smokes already cost almost $70 per 40. it is not about health.
They'll just switch back to cigarettes, what a waste of money for talk-talk-talk... cigarette prices in the USA have skyrocketed, and like the presenter said "if we choose to smoke, we will pay extra to smoke"... I live in the Carolinas and tobacco is one our largest cash crops
so this isn't a banning its government corruption due to support by Tabaco companies this a crime.
No it's all about the tax.
@@JustIn-mu3nl my point exactly.
@@summersoldier1003 sorry I misread.
@@JustIn-mu3nl No buzz, not on you i forgot the damn word government t didn't make sense before you were right
You only have to look at cities on the west coast of noth America to see what these policies do. From Vancouver down to L.A. The policies that were incorporated have now left those cities in a state of chaos.
Taxing tobacco like this is akin to taxing the poor; thus rendering so many people to feel further disenfranchisement. Using "Health" these days as a guise for other means is becoming so uncomfortably prevalent.
This ain't about health at all, it's all about the dollars.. just remember when all the smokers quit, everybody loses, the government won't lose there money, they'll just tax everybodys groceries and fuel
In Japan for a pouch of tobacco it’s $ 5 to $20 only adults buy or you need a special card to buy why don’t they have a plastic card you can apply for adults that smoke it’s that simple
I'm so glad I have useless bureaucrats to look after me, a 42 year old adult, I'm obviously to dumb to do it myself.
I haven't met anyone that pays for legal cigs in a couple of years.
The fact is the government double dips on tobbaco, the tobacco industry pays excise taxes and consumers pay gst etc. Alcohol is highly taxed also, if every consumer quit our economy would collapse. I challenge them to ban tobbaco if it's such a burden on the health system.
Booze for example a bottle of 18 chives whisky in Japan is $50 here in Australia it’s like $130
Give up drinking and smoking it’s expensive and a waste of time
@I am A smurf or the government could just let people enjoy things
Smoking is a choice, not a necessity. If an extra $5-$10 a pack is breaking the bank you're already wasting money you clearly can't afford.
Screw these disposable things , the ones you can set up at your local vape store were the way to go. Routinely change the coils and mix the nicotine to strength as required.
Although by banning all recreational vaping, businesses in every state are now going to close which will choke not only people's pockets and push them either back to smoking or some creature making crap in their yard , this will turn to shit very quickly.
Goodluck to those older guys and gals who jumped from tobacco to vaping and actually made progress towards either quitting or better health in general.... I hope you all stocked up for this wild ride.
Always have a couple years worth of nic in the freezer 👍
@@hobo1704 for sure dude if you don't it's going to suck hey, back to tobacco
@@ryanferris8905 yeah fk that
If the poorest people are the ones smoking, how does increasing the price deter those people from continuing to smoke?
I started smoking when 15c a packet, said i would give up when got to a dollar because it would never get to that 😂😂😂
Been smoke free 20 years
You made the right decision
That must be a while ago.....I remember Windfield smokes were 30c a packet, in 1975.
Stop attacking smokers, this is so wrong. We just dont have the money. Leave us alone
Whats really disgusting is that at least in the UK the tax will help the NHS deal with all the lung diseases when smokers reach old age but in Australia is doesn't even go towards that.
That's a lie though.
Banning the most effective Tobacco Harm Therapy devices yet NOT banning tobacco just seems like STUPID logic to me. If the govt are serious about the health of the citizens they would treat tobacco the same as HRT. Prescription only and at chemists only. Remove tobacco from corner shops, servos and super markets.
Stopping the smoking tax would be wise . It makes me hate the government .
If politicians spent tax money fairly I wouldn't mind paying extra
That's the thing, instead of taxing us more, how about they spend what they get better. The government is the largest employment sector in the country, what the hell for, all they are doing is creating restrictions for a population that's smaller than a large American city, it's disgusting.
@@kingcosworth2643 Boomers tell me continually that my generation are soft and lazy. Taxes and license fees have increased 1000%. Since 1960. Some states require you spend $150 per year for a chainsaw licence. Try starting a business a today good luck with all the fees and licence's.
Just a fun fact some states CAN charge you up to $2000 for incorrect use of a car horn
A lot less toxic chemicals in cannabis than cigarettes
I am happy there is no extra tax at the brothel
People who work and smoke are being taxed twice...alcohol destroys families.
This is criminal
Next thing you know they'll ban Farting in public
It’s always been about money. If the government were that serious about the health of the nation they would ban it outright.
this makes me sick. if they are genuinely conserned just ban it
Unfortunately I like most people started smoking as a teen and had parents and other family members that all smoked so was a passive smoker from day one my first packet of smokes was around $2 in 1986 my first packet of tobbaco was around $5 in 87_88 now a 25g packet of tobbaco is $50 an up to an over $60 pkt now 37yrs later still addicted and paying at least $150 a week for 75 grams of tobbaco now I agree it was my choice to start in the first place back when you could legally buy them at 16 years old way I see it is the government an the tobbaco company's have been profiteering off smokers and the health of smokers for long enough I see the damage it causes daily and the pictures of Brian age 34 dying of lung cancer along with all the other shock an awe photo's on the front of every packet yet I still smoke after 37 yrs of smoking they will soon enough lose me as a customer because the dead don't smoke so like the actor yul Brenner said before he died of cancer just don't smoke if you want to keep your health and money ☠️💩🇦🇺👽
I smoked for 40 years gave up 1 july last year just stopped no patches or anything you can too stop being a weak pis sant its not really that hard
@@AndrewMitchell001 if people want to smoke it's their business..the fuggin govt needs people to smoke to collect the tax while restricting them where they can smoke etc etc to keep other screaming, woke wankers happy..
@@AndrewMitchell001 I did the same 27 years ago. Cold Turkey. I really enjoyed my durries too, but now, just the thought of having one makes my gut churn! I couldn't go back if i tried
I think smokers just payed for the new football stadium to be built in Tasmania 🤦♂️the government for the people !
You miss the other big winner today, the tobacco companies who have been loosing market share to vaping products. The real reason smoking rates in this country appear small. If Vaping products suddenly become hard to get, there is a generation of who is now addicted to nicotine for whom the easiest option is to buy cig's. So the Government wins as the tax on Cig's is much higher than it was on Vaping products, the old industry is happy as they watch their sales double overnight.
exactly
That's why they banned online poker and casinos, which was a win for pokies and sportbetting.
They are planning to still sell vape stuff but it will be from a pharmacy instead
@@off-gridoutbackaustralia With no flavour. Adults dont deserve flavour.
@@off-gridoutbackaustralia Yes, but you will need a prescription for that. The cigarettes will simply be an easier option for most.
I reckon that the govt should just let people be people, yes cigarettes are unhealthy, and yes vaping is unhealthy, but honestly, why is it the govt's business to decide whether someone chooses to be unhealthy or not, stop banning, stop raising the tax, and let people be people, if tobacco and vapes become illegal, there is going to be a higher crime rate in people dealing that, now that comes from. the street and people will not know what is in it. which is worse, store-bought, or street laced?
Oh yes bans always work !!!
I wonder if the government will care when all smokers are homeless.
They don’t need to legalise drugs they just allow the pharmaceutical companies make it and sell it as pharmaceuticals
Grow you’re own simple
Excise: eighty five cents in the dollar on tobacco for the government... all paid up front (in full) before the product leaves bonded storage.
