  • Sky News host Paul Murray says the “single biggest addict” to tobacco in Australia is the Federal Government as they’re set to increase taxes on tobacco by $3.3 billion.
“The media got very excited by a new toy today … they are coming for your vapes, certainly younger people this is the way to get your rocks off as opposed to, good old fashioned, traditional smoking the reality is, all of it’s bad for your health … something you shouldn’t do,” Mr Murray said.
“What they actually announced today was a $3.3 billion increase to tobacco taxes … the single biggest addict to tobacco in Australia is the Federal Government.”

If the Govt was so concerned about our health they would ban cigarettes, the reality is that the Govt is addicted to tax and getting as much of it as they can from us.

Why aren't they subsidizing stop smoking aids if there that committed to helping people stop use some of the extra revenue to reduce the cost of those but no the answer is an increase and ban vaping which will drive people who moved from expensive smokes to vaping back to smoking and money back into the governments pockets

Those who share their experiences don't know how much it helps when you're about to give up, it gives you the strength knowing somone who actully know what it's like to go through this tell you it's possible, it's not the same somone telling you you can do it when they have no idea what it's like, but hearing somone who knows what it's like that helps a lot since you understand it firsthand and made it out gives so much hope. so thanks for sharing.

When so much of the cost of cigarettes goes to the government it's effectively the government who's selling them and the cigarette companies who are just subcontractors taking a small cut.

The reasons I believe they haven't been able to tax vaping is two fold. Firstly, when Keating introduced the levy in 1994, parliament made the mistake of taxing tobacco, not nicotine. As mentioned, the data regarding price increases vs product sold does not support the argument that increasing prices reduces tobacco use. Secondly, the UK is encouraging vaping as a way to quit smoking and having some success; it would look bad for our government to tax a quit smoking product while raising taxes on smoking products also, it looks worse banning a quit smoking product while increasing taxes on tobacco. My question is, when does it come down to the choice of the consumer? If we followed this philosophy consistently, gym time would be mandated, there'd be massive taxes on lollies and chips, massive taxes on caffine products. The philosophy makes no sense, you ban something or tax it because it's bad for the consumer, have they not already paid the price for their choice?

Here's the truth about tobacco and vaping. I'm now an ex-tobacco smoker. I was a heavy smoker for over 40 years. Their condoned remedies and solutions for quitting are ineffective for many smokers. I found it impossible to quit smoking, and the rising cost of tobacco was of zero impact on the addiction. Heavy smokers will tell you that they'd much rather smoke than eat. My food budget went steadily down as the tobacco tax continued to rise.
Before these new announced measures, tobacco taxes were already rising regularly every six months. Nothing else mattered apart from a continuous supply of tobacco. One 50g packet of tobacco was costing around $120, and it was lasting me about two days. This was at the time I quit, about 16 months ago. It's more like $150 for 50g today. I managed to switch to vaping and cease tobacco smoking completely, and almost effortlessly, with the correct choice of vape machine and liquid, to most closely emulate tobacco smoking. Currently I can only obtain liquid nicotine for the vape liquid, by obtaining a medical prescription AND purchasing internationally!. It is already locked down and controlled, and as a consequence, expensive. It is however much less addictive than the cigarettes had proved to be. I have complete control over how much nicotine I'm vaping (making your own vape liquid is simple and easy), and there is NO urgency about getting the next vape hit, as there was about getting the next cigarette lit. Getting off vaping later (once tobacco is long gone from habit and addiction), will not be a problem.
Over half the addictive properties of commercial tobacco is from the addictive chemicals that the tobacco companies ADD to the tobacco. So that home grown and processed tobacco is under half as addictive as store bought product. It would prove MUCH easier to quit smoking if smoking the natural product. Nicotine is NOT the only addictive compound involved.
The science is clear about vaping. It's at worst about 5% as health damaging as tobacco smoking. There are only a handful of compounds in vape liquid, with the major components (VG and PG) also used and consumed in many processed "foods". Importantly, vape liquid is NOT burned, it is vaporized. There are about 7000 toxic chemicals in burnt tobacco smoke, and some of the worst of them originate from the addictive chemicals that the tobacco companies add to the tobacco. Much of the very small health risk of vaping can be easily negated by suitable choices of the flavors added to the vape liquid. For quitting tobacco smoking, tobacco flavors are preferred.
So why the global push to ban vaping? People need to understand that the tobacco corporations are not shy of playing ALL the angles. Philip Morris, the world's biggest tobacco corporation, have already spent well over one billion U.S. dollars via front organizations, funding this global push against vaping. THEY understand that vaping is a VERY SERIOUS threat to continued tobacco sales. At the same time, they are also selling vape products. Why not after all, make some money out of the threat, and use the position to also attack the independent vape companies. I suspect they are also behind the very recent focus change of vape marketing, with products aimed squarely at the youth market. These colorful and cheap (often disposable) vape products did not exist just a year or so ago.
Like all corporations, only money, profit and sales matters to the tobacco corporations. They delayed all actions against the health dangers of tobacco usage, for over 30 years!. Now they're working heavily to cancel vaping globally, to again protect their tobacco sales. Vaping offers the world the possibility to finally be completely rid of the dangerous product. So it''s so sad that again, governments such as the Australian one, are AGAIN falling hook line and sinker for their propaganda. How can they never learn from their previous mistakes?.
The recent growth of black market vape activities within Australia, is likely largely fueled by the government's introduction about a year ago, of banned vape nicotine sales within Australia and the prescription requirement for international purchase. And if school children are currently playing with colorful vape toys, than THAT is in my opinion, a hell of an improvement over MY experience in school, where the same types of kids were SMOKING TOBACCO behind the sheds and at every opportunity. THAT was a time when our government CONDONED tobacco smoking as safe and harmless. Today they're doing even worse. They have a HUGE conflict of interest with their tobacco taxation, as many in the comments are pointing out. It's pure corruption.

Yet at the same time pushed for legalizing recreational Marijuana. They claim the tax raised on tobacco was going to health programs to get you to quit and for the Healthcare industry, blah blah blah and blah........and it backfired and then they started providing places where you could get heroine, etc... What they call safe injection sites. It was simply a way for those in power to add more to their pockets because non of the tax money was used for what they claimed it would be. Screw these disposable things , the ones you can set up at your local vape store were the way to go. Routinely change the coils and mix the nicotine to strength as required.
Although by banning all recreational vaping, businesses in every state are now going to close which will choke not only people's pockets and push them either back to smoking or some creature making crap in their yard , this will turn to shit very quickly.
Goodluck to those older guys and gals who jumped from tobacco to vaping and actually made progress towards either quitting or better health in general.... I hope you all stocked up for this wild ride.

Banning the most effective Tobacco Harm Therapy devices yet NOT banning tobacco just seems like STUPID logic to me. You miss the other big winner today, the tobacco companies who have been loosing market share to vaping products. The real reason smoking rates in this country appear small. If Vaping products suddenly become hard to get, there is a generation of who is now addicted to nicotine for whom the easiest option is to buy cig's. So the Government wins as the tax on Cig's is much higher than it was on Vaping products, the old industry is happy as they watch their sales double overnight.

I reckon that the govt should just let people be people, yes cigarettes are unhealthy, and yes vaping is unhealthy, but honestly, why is it the govt's business to decide whether someone chooses to be unhealthy or not, stop banning, stop raising the tax, and let people be people, if tobacco and vapes become illegal, there is going to be a higher crime rate in people dealing that, now that comes from. the street and people will not know what is in it. which is worse, store-bought, or street laced?
