MJ Cole was so far ahead of his time. An absolute master, especially on the remixes. His creativity whilst remaining true to the originals is unequalled. I wasn’t even into 2 step in the slightest, was all about tech house, US garage and dnb, yet I still had more respect for MJ than virtually any other producer in the very early 2000s.
He's still producing music and has his own RUclips channel where he interacts with his audience and teaches them how to build tunes which if you ask me is criminally neglected by a lot people. You must check it out!!
I blagged 2k off the Princes Youth Trust back in the day and opened a record shop at the time when all this was coming out, im originally a House, Hardcore and D.N.B head but this music was killing it at the time, good memories, then Virgin records opened starting selling vinyl too and MP3's came along killed it all within 18 months. The worse part was it killed the community vibe and a place to hang out, the kids at the time couldn't see that racing out to get CDJ's and downloading music, i guess they saw it as progress? I saw it as destroying the very essence of what the scene was about and that has been lost now. Ironically the best way for producers to best protect their music from piracy is still to only sell on Vinyl (that's a contentious argument and i know it doesn't stop people from recording their works but it it does preserve something that has been lost and retains the uniqueness that so many were quick to throw away). I've heard DJ's saying that carrying around a memory stick is easier than carrying precious records and fair enough but at what cost? and really if you was a DJ playing out there was and is no problem with getting other artist work on digital strictly for playing out and keeping it on lock down. I hope some day the artists, DJ's and producers come back to this and understand that it is their duty to perhaps bringing this aspect of the industry....
Great story. I remember DJing back on the day and when you entered a club with a record box (or someone carrying it if you were lucky), the crowd would part and you'd instantly get recognition. Those days are long gone now.
@Jason Gray i take your point but i still have to disagree, you see i remember the break dance days being exactly as you described if not better because it was a ghettoblaster, skateboards, and us kids trying to rap, beatbox and break dance that was an amazing time. When you are standing on the corners with friends spitting bars and listening to tracks and fairplay to you but you are missing out on going to a real record shop meeting working MCs and Djs, legends of the scene up close and personal, being lucky enough to hear dubs that have just been pressed or actually get white labels and test presses in your bag as they come through the door unexpectedly, then there was listening to the banter that goes around in the shop and seeing a DJ smash it up on the dex with real vinyl, in real time on a kick arse system. Maybe you were never witness to this sort of thing so you dont know what you are missing and if that is the case i feel for ya cos it was something very special....
This is a wild sound. Not techno, not house. Proper garage
Proper Garage being the key word !!!
Can't beat the old skool classics 🎶🎶🎶

I remember I put a compilation together of MJ Cole's remixes on a CD-R, like 10 to 12 tracks and called it 'Re-cued'... Wore the ish out of that CD!
