This is a fantastic retrospective. I absolutely love this game but certainly recognize the flaws, and you've brought a really balanced approach to reviewing the game that hit on all the things I love about it, while also citing the things that don't hold up and deserve to be critiqued. This was a fun and really creative, imaginative game that suffered under a short development time and an outdated engine/tech. Very well edited and produced video, brother.

My most beloved Battlefield game in all Battlefield games because of its future combat concept which is grounded in realistic weaponry with a mix of sci-fi vehicles and tools.
I always look back at it with good memories because it was the Battlefield game that really gave me real moments in gaming that could only happen in Battlefield. I think DICE should definitely give future warfare another chance and bring back the Battle Walkers and Titans to us once more ever since teasing us with all the easter eggs in BF4 with the EU drone, the PAC emblem and battle walker prototypes in Giants of Karelia, the prototype launch pods and also the prototype Titan in Hangar 42. Oh, don't forget the prototype railgun (Rorsch Mk-1) that would end up being the stationary railgun anti-vehicle turret in 2142.
By the way, the unlocked sniper rifle (Zeller-H AMR) could also destroy lollermines and any other explosives in the game other than the RDX shotgun's projectiles.

The DICE Battlefront 2 has a supremacy mode where on some maps after a team wins a conquest round, they board transport ships and land on the enemy capital ship and either destroy it or are repelled by the enemy team where then another conquest round takes place with the damage caused on the defending ship carries over. Not exactly like Titan assault, but you can tell they probably took a lot of inspiration

Concerning weapons characteristics since I believe this is important:
Battlefield 2142 introduced bullet damage drop-off on a far larger scale compared to BF2 (where almost all weapons baring pistols had a flat number and the same bullets to kill regardless at range) and almost all the weapons had damage drop-off; in addition, some weapons were also given more penalty in terms of bullet deviation more when strafing sideways compared to moving forward for some reason and in general 2142's weapons are more inaccurate (with the exceptions of LMGs) and less lethal at range compared to their BF2 counterparts. Add onto the fact body armor may skewer range performance with a .8 multiplier against most targets and I believe this is why at times BF2142 shooting feels overly clunky and at too a lesser extent "random".

    • @rosskuhlman
      @rosskuhlman Год назад +1

This is true, but all of the Refractor engine games had a very clunky feel, including BF2. It may have been a bit worse than usual in 2142, but the shooting experience in all of the games was sub-par when compared to things like COD, CS1.6, UT2K4, or many other popular multiplayer games from that time period. The chaos and large scale combat where really what brought people in, more than the gun feel.

Hey, nice video :) But I would like to clarify a couple of things:
    1. A physical copy is not a hard requirement but preferable.
    2. There is another community called NovGames.
    3. 2142 performs bad with high ping. Already at 60-70-80 it becomes quite noticeable. Yours being 100 means your critique of weapons, hit reg and movement clunkyness is somewhat unfair. For players with 20-30 ping ~ things are relatively smooth. There are many US players on EU server with 150 ping. IMO you should rather critisize ping / netcode as the issue, not the weapons.
    4. Back in the day there was a lot of aimbot / wallhack etc. IMO frequent cheaters, random punkbooster kick every 5 minutes ~ and highroofing did way more damage to the playerbase than bugs / quirks / flaws.
    5. The consoles must not be destroyed in numerical order. You can do 2-4-1-3 or even rush 3 / 4 and destroy the shield gate if 1 / 2 is too heavily defended. The strategical depth of the titan mode is under-appreciated.
    6. Even before DLC came with motion mine bait grenade, you could shoot the mines with Zeller from safe distance. But anyways it was a big and annoying issue for too long.

    • @GravityBFTV

Thanks for the clarification. I appreciate it. To respond to your points: 1) I didnt want reference any nefarious methods of getting the game, although its always an option. 2) This I hadnt heard of until I made the video, so definitely a good point. 3) I agree with you that ping/netcode is a huge issue, however, I recorded a lot of gameplay from playing on the US reclamation server with ~30 ping and had similar issues. 4) This is something I dont have a memory of during its prime, so i didnt mention it. Ill have to take your word on it. 5) This I knew, but I wanted to keep things simple for time-constraints and new viewers. 6) This was definitely an oversight. Somehow I completely missed it. Thanks for the comment!

There is a Project Remaster that works as a mod improving maps, graphics, sounds, animations, and also weapons, but many die hard fans of 2142 still prefer original weapons.
It's in development by some community for years, you can download it and play but there is rarely any event where there would be chance to play it multiplayer. I enjoyed it a lot when I had chance to play it on multi, but the amount of remastered maps is small.

Afterall, the point of an anti-material rifle is less so to snipe infantry but to destroy equipment and perform EOD.
32:04 "MechWarrior players feel at home." MechWarrior: Living Legends literally started development in 2142's Refractor engine, there are videos of various tests like implementing LB-10X autocannons, JumpJets and even a WIP Mad Cat but the limitations eventually moved it to the CryTek engines of Crysis and then Crysis: Warhead.

2142 definitely deserves a modern sequel. Heck, BF2 deserves a modern sequel… all my love for battlefield come from BF2, and they haven’t really made a title like it since. Vehicles used to have good handling. Aircraft had better controls that felt real compared to the arcade feel they have now.
Snipers didn’t have silly beacons giving away their positions, ect ect. As annoying as it is to get killed by someone camping, it doesn’t take tremendous skill to respawn and figure out how to deal with them.
The game was more fun that way, you actually had to look 👀 for the enemy and stay razor focused in some situations.

Watching the conclusion I think my main fustration is that DICE doesn't look at 2142 (or even BF2) and yet built off that template while rectifying some of the flaws like you mentioned. Just every BF just feels *shallow* in not trying to make a proper large team Vs large team BF game. "there was no game breaking issues" lol i remember using the APC launch pod to land between lamp posts and buildings to glitch into the building, in which you could shoot out from but people couldn't shoot in. I also remember assigning the mouse scroll wheel to be walk forward and/or backwards or something like that and literally flying in the pods.
Maybe not game breaking in the way of making the game crash, but definitely game breaking in the way of balance lol. Seriously though, BF2142 was and probably still is my favorite battlefield game, all things considered. It's aged a lot now, but i have yet to play a battlefield game that felt as fun as it was for the first several years after its launch. Even battlebit, as goofy and fun as that game is, doesn't match the joy BF2142 brought me.

A modern BF2: Special Forces game would be sweet too… and no not like hardline. Super dark maps that actually encourage the player to use night vision

To shoot... You had to stop, crouch or prone and shoot... Unless you had a shotgun.. it wasn't broken because there was heavy recoil, and it's not luck based.
I love your video... You got some personal bias here that wasn't what every experienced 🙂 but I'm a fanboy this was my favorite game of all time.
I didn't play titan whenever possible. Always seemed like the obvious solution to the problems of titan mode.

i Do not remember the name of the two assault rifles. The big one, this black thing. I only used it on single fire and it was kind a semi automatic sniper rifle.

Isn't that stamina that almost doesn't run out just a reclamation addon? Old game and other servers don't allow you to run this much.
Also I never noticed any difference in movement on the moving titan compared to the ground... I think there was something like that on old computers with slow internet connection in the past tho. This game really easly became unplayable under lags.
And finally, Reclamation is not the only and not the largest community nowadays. There is also Russian Novgames community that has more active players and also a few small english-speaking communities here and there. Recamation rely only on being best know one among english-speakers, sadly they are quate bad quality wise compared to other servers.
I tend to play on whatever server has most players at the time, so it's mostly the russian one unless it's full, the downside is that most player there don't know english and there are rarely english squad around there. I never liked 2142 voip system anyway, the quality is annoyingly bad and makes it hard to understand many people.

sucks that nov games is running their own server and account system, never managed to sign up there

@@MKR3238 Yeah, it's annoying they are separate. I don't remember how to register there anymore, but I like that you have the unlocks system there so I feel the progress instead of having everything unlocked. Thats the advantage of their separate master server. Most people probably dislike that part and I'm the strange one.

@@hory-portier i think i would prefer having to unlock my stuff (again) than just getting it all for free
something to work towards to ('tho playing in itself is already fun enough in 2142, don't necessarily need the carrot on a stick haha)

You're massively exaggerating yhe movement issues, and yhe gunplay really wasnt that bad, less bloom than BF2. It also encouraged slower paced gameplay, while future BF games would feel like CoD

BF 2142 in 2023 still the best shooter, old is gold, its orgasmic!
All the new games are crap, unleashed by money greedy publishers and feminists, forcing themselves into gaming.
    Fancy graphics shitty games.

Bf up to BF4 was in my opinion a peak. The fact they didn’t take the bf4 engine and go back to 2142 and 1942 is beyond me. The new shit and ecscpecialy 2042 is a mess. So tired of the new corporate games
