Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on RUclips, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on RUclips. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on RUclips, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.

The great Jeff "Skunk" Baxter played the guitar solo on this track and many other Steely Dan tunes. Baxter also joined the Doobie Brothers in 1975. Great guitarist.

Steely Dan was never really a favorite band of mine back in the day -- even though I liked all of the songs that hit the airwaves.I guess it was sometime in the early 1990s when I realized they are one of my favorite bands -- up to this day.
That is probably because they did not play live in concert after the first couple of years until a couple of decades later!

When I listen to Steely Dan it brings me back to the 70’s. Nothing but good memories. What a great era it was. 🫶
There were always lots of rumors about Dan songs, they are master story tellers. My suggestion: Green Earrings, it's amazing with two different guitar solos by two different guitarists. A must hear!

This and Do It Again were my introduction to Steely Dan in 1975 I think it was. Then Aja came out and I bought their first greatest hits album in 1978 and became addicted.
A friend of mine in '78 or'79 found out I liked them and he introduced me to Pat Matheny, Weather Report, Dave Brubeck and others in jazz.
Donald Fagens The Nightfly is a really good one to check out with songs I.G.Y. (International Geophysical Year) and New Frontier.

There are probably some Horace Silver fans out here that would suggest you give "Song for My Father" (1964) a listen for some context. Glad you played the full album version, not the radio/single one. :)
This song stems from a chick at a party who was avoiding Donald. He wrote down his phone number and gave it to her, in case she had a change of heart. The rest just elaborates on that. This is an early hit and had a lot of radio play. I followed their evolution all the way to the end. Some more good early ones are; DIRTY WORK, DO IT AGAIN, MY OLD SCHOOL, DON'T TAKE ME ALIVE, BODHISATTVA, and KID CHARLEMAGNE. That should get you going for a while - but don't give up on The 'Dan until you hit FM(no static at all), which they were commissioned to record for the Movie of the same name released in 1978.

One of Jeffrey's best solos, a groovy bass turnaround from Walter, piano from the always tasty Michael Omartian, an opening riff borrowed from Horace Silver and Jim Gordon on drums. Once you've heard it, you've got to hear it again.
Hearing them with Steve Miller band in Red Rocks was a gift!!!
Back in the day you never would have to worry about wasting your hard earned cash on a SD album. All the albums were good and every song was good. You always got your moneys worth.
Being somewhat of a literalist, my interpretation of this song is rather simple: Guy meets girl in college social setting, he comes on to her pretty strong and scares her away. He's already given her his phone number ( perhaps on a match book cover or napkin ) - and as she takes flight into the night, he calls to her the lyrics about not 'losing that number'. Right or wrong in my take, and after listening to this piece multiple times, I have to say that it is my hands down favorite of the entire 70's era.
Early and great tune that was played very often on FM radio stations in NYC. So much so that I and my friends sang along with the song over time!Of all their great songs my favorite one, blending the mostly true story line and the incredible music together is just incredible; My Old School!
Michael Omartian drives this song with his beautiful piano play. Shakes me to my core. Skunk on that guitar. WOW !!

Back in the day, people would always talk about "rolling a number," and it meant rolling a marijuana cigarette, or joint.
I was in my early twenties and certainly richly steeped in the marijuana culture when this song was released. But this is the first I have heard of people misconstruing that line. For me, it was always a phone number. 😊

Yes you can’t predict how the next Steely Dan song will sound based on the last own you heard. The have a very deep and wide compositional pallet.

That's Steely Dan for ya, enigmatic, always keep 'em guessing. Their songs were always somehow perfect, never a note out of place. Amazing band

Another great track from this album, in my opinion, is "Any Major Dude." For sure you will like it. Super catchy chorus.
Jeff skunk Baxter was instrumental in Michael McDonald joining the Doobie Brothers.
10CC is another band that is the same, all their songs sound different but were very big hits such as "Rubber Bullets" great!
"Good morning Judge" great! "People in Love" great ballad "I'm not in Love" another great ballad and so it goes on and on. They could write so much variety in their songs! You will love listening to this band also. Please give them a go they are worth listening to they were very big in the 70's of course. Not many are making suggestions for 10CC which is such a shame. Listen to the studio recordings. Much much better.
People often debate about the meaning of the lyrics/title. "Number" could mean musical piece, phone number (with sexual inuendo), and apparently in California it could also mean a reefer/marijuana cigarette. So basically they wrapped sex, drugs, and rock and roll into one word. Pure genius

A number was the same as a joint both slang for Marijuana in the 60's & 70's.
a DAN song that did not get much notice and became popular with a lot of fans is 'here at the western world' - a sarcastic lokk at drug addled depravity in america. from 1976 and was meant to be on the album 'the royal scam' but was left on the cutting room floor. this is a classic DAN tune that needs recognition : ruclips.net/video/1EBdygOrdAc/видео.html

The Doobie Brothers have a similar arsenal of compositions of diverse tracks, especially after McDonald joined the band. Both of them have a sound that travels over decades with0ut getting stale
