If there are birds of prey in your area, then it would be best to place a net across the top of the fence which surrounds the hen area.

When I moved to a new house, the owners had a lemon and an orange tree growing in hen yard. They shade the chickens, give us citrus and prevent birds of prey from swooping down on them. The hens fertilize the trees , we put fresh pea straw around the trees that help mulch them and the hens scratch and and benifit the soil. Cover trees whilst young so they don't get eaten by chickens
Jacques in the garden channel did that, planted trees in the chicken enclosure. He put wire mesh on top of the trees to stop the chickens from digging up the roots

Also, to Sharon: just to say I understand a little the costs- emotional & physical, as well as financial- of traveling back & forth to support your mom like you're doing. It's not glamorous or exciting, but it is extremely valuable. Good on you, & Andy as well.
Just remember that chickens can fly if they decide they want on the other side of the fence and their wings aren’t clipped. Just sayin…….
Bark mulch in great for them to scratch around in for bugs etc and it will help keep the ground moist and cooler
I have seen other channels using a beach or picnic umbrella as shade from the sun while they are working outside- might help to keep cooler and prevent sunburns
we spent our last holidays on a finca in Fuerteventura with lots of animals, including a large flog of chickens. One black hen with 7 tiny chicks: 5 black as their mom, 1 speckled, 1 pale. 4 completely white young hens -obviously siblings, 1 beautifully colored and proud rooster and many others. All completely free ranging with all the other animals. One hen had chosen our little backyard for breeding: she sat on 18 eggs, surrounded by her colleagues, 3 farm dogs and 2 neighbors cats without any problems. it was a joy to watch. Good luck with your girls, the hens that Lillian picked for you are beautiful and looking healthy.

Chickens don't "wee and poo." They have only one spot and the wee and poo is all in one. Lovely looking hens. Welcome.

One little piece of advice. If you can put a cover over the run. Predators can get in but the more dangerous part is wild birds that can bring diseases to your healthy hens. Since they are outside of the main house predators may feel free to attack during the day. But some chicken wire over the top will make a world of difference especially with wild birds.

Oh dear Sharon, I hope you packed your fur lined pants and a raincoat! It is 14 degrees C and raining here in Derbyshire. The good news is haven't had to water my veggies for days - bad news is the chances of my outdoor tomatoes ripening is remote! The work and the chickens are looking good - it is so satisfying to finish the niggling left over jobs.
I was panicking on Sunday I didnt know what to do I had withdrawal symptoms and giddy spells...............

Quite right Sharon about the Spanish love of roundabouts, the only problem is they have not idea how to use then ??? The amount of times we have seen accidents of cars on the outside lane cross to the inside lane to before an exit junction and get hit !!!! I know it is the law to do it that way, but it is so dangerous especially when you are on a motorbike.
I love the channel but I have to admit to fast forwarding through the wall pointing, there's only so much you can watch

Now you need to get one rooster, so you can raise your own baby chicks for future .
No rooster, more trouble than they are worth and noisy!
Much better to rescue battery chickens, and Roosters are too noisy

@@FincaLife l was raised on a ranch here in the USA, and one of our dogs loved our free range chickens, he was their self appointed body guard.
@@FincaLifeTilly is bred to guard. With training, she’ll be fine. Alfie is another matter…my cats used to bring chooks home alive as presents. Had to put them back under the cover of darkness.😊
